Cottage in Gunnerside, Swaledale, Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire, England - Lovely Family Home With Lovely South-facing Private Garden In Tiny Village

Farmendon is a lovely home from home ideal for family holidays or romantic break. Guests love the views from the kitchen and dining room, overlooking the enclosed south-facing garden, towards the hills opposite and particularly enjoy watching the birds feeding on the patio (look out for the woodpecker). The living room is spacious and comfortable (enjoy a good book in the rocking chair) and the kitchen is very well-equipped, with all mod cons. Bedrooms are roomy, with antique furniture and lovely linen and the garden is perfect for children and dogs, with a sheltered patio where parents can sit in the sun with a glass of wine and keep an eye out!

Parking for one car is to the side of the house (plenty of public parking nearby for more cars) and the tearoom/bistro and local pub are just yards away. There are many walks direct from the door. Dog-friendly, Farmendon is an ideal holiday cottage, with beautiful Swaledale scenery around in every direction - you'll return here again and again! Free wifi. Dogs welcomed! Sorry, no smoking. We welcome short breaks, including 2 nt breaks, which are £15 less than 3 nt price.

About Judith Dower

I love to come to Swaledale whenever time permits. In a stressful job, I find a holiday cottage lets me unwind and get away from the everyday cares in the peace and tranquillity of Swaledale. I like to get out and walk when I'm in Gunnerside; even if the weather isn't too good, it blows the cobwebs away and the scenery is spectacular whatever time of year. I'm sure you will enjoy the cottage for a holiday as much as I do!

Why Judith Dower chose North Yorkshire

Swaledale is such a gorgeous place, there is nowhere else on earth like it. I love the landscape, the views and the timeless feel of the dale. Although becoming a little more popular these days, the area nevertheless feels totally remote from everyday cares, almost as though it's in a timewarp (although we do now have some mobile signal in the village!).

What makes this cottage unique

The garden at Farmendon is a great plus; you can sit on the private sheltered patio, looking at the hills opposite, or relax on the lawn. Or watch the many birds feeding outside the kitchen window - a woodpecker is a frequent visitor. On a tiny cul-de-sac in the village, the house is still only 30m from the village tearoom, so convenient if you don't want to cook! Many walks straight from the door, or you can take the bus up to Keld and walk back one of four different ways, all in the midst of stunning scenery.

Peaceful homely cottage

We had a lovely week at Farmendon. Wonderful location for walking straight from the door. A very comfortable cottage, full of character, and cosy in wet weather. We enjoyed browsing the local history books and looking at the old photographs - helped to give us a better idea of Swaledale's history and unique character. Beautiful enclosed garden with lovely views looking across the churchyard and up the other side of the dale - still memorable, 12 months on. We have decided to return to Swaledale this summer with more members of the family, so Farmendon sadly isn't quite big enough this time, but would definitely consider returning on another trip.

Gorgeous getaway fab location & cottage

You can't help but relax in this property. A cottage that oozes traditional Yorkshire Dales & obvious lovely family memories. A little Dales tardus. Looks tiny from the outside but rooms are large welcoming and clean with views to die for. Loved being able to have a soak overlooking fab scenery and waking to be able to spot the post van winding through the dale. Total relaxation yet fully equipped. Lovely modern facilities combine with lovely traditional furniture & fittings. Perfect combo. Garden is lovely & you could spend a whole morning just watching all the wildlife! Had lovely walks up Gunnerside Gyll and Kisdon and over to the very friendly Punch Bowl at Low Row. Nice food here and also at the Kings Head in the village. A drive over the Buttertubs to Hawes recommended as well as over to Leyburn and over to Tanhill. Great for bikers cyclists walkers & cars. Something for everyone. Owners can't do enough for you. Defo went home fully relaxed and chilled. Will be coming back soon.

Delightful cottage in perfect location

We stayed at the cottage for a 5 day break during Whit week with two of our children ages 13 and 11 and two collie dogs. We all fell in love with the cottage which is full of lovely antiques in keeping with it's age yet at the same time had a brand new bathroom, beautifully tiled and good hot shower. The bedrooms are all good size and beds were all really comfy with thick feather duvets. The cottage is in the heart of the village and parking was good, right next to cottage, it is slightly tucked away but still less than 2 min walk to village pub where food was of a high standard and reasonably priced. The cottage has lovely views to the front there is another row of cottages and to the rear there is the village church and then a backdrop of hills which greets you when you open the curtains and you can enjoy from bed and bath! The cottage garden was also a joy with a lawned area and established flowers and shrubs. It is enclosed by a drystone wall and trees so was perfect for dogs and children. The garden was a sun trap with a bench on the patio which kept the evening sun. The cottage was well equipped with plenty of crockery and pots and pans. There was also tea towels and basics like hand wash, washing up liquid etc Another lovely touch was the well stocked library of books about the local area which included much information on the history of Swaledale and where to walk. There was even a supply of up to date Countryfile magazines which was a nice touch. Gunnerside village has many lovely walks from the front door including the Gunnerside Gyhll , footpath opposite the pub and other walks through hay meadows and along the Swale. We also visited Muker and are at Farners arms good for dogs and we shopped at Co-op in Leyburn which had everything we needed, also small shop in Muker and Spa in Hawes. The service provided in booking and letting was great and really helpful and I would definitely recommend the cottage and hope to return soon.

Views to die for

A lovely traditional stone country cottage right in the heart of Gunnerside, with easy access to walks of all grades. Scenery is stunning, with a beck running through the village & the River Swale is just a short walk away. Ruins of lead mine workings are also within easy reach with a little more effort. The village pub is just across the road & serves good food with real ale. Loved the peaceful & secluded rear garden & can't wait to go back there again.

Lovely comfortable cottage in Gunnerside.

What a great location for a week in the Dales. The cottage was so characterful with lots of lovely touches- whilst being really comfy. We loved the fact we could take our dog and there are so many picturesque walks on the doorstep. The views are wonderful, the cottage was warm with very comfortable beds and a garden to sit in to relax and watch the birds. The village has a good pub which serves food and there are lots of places to visit. We liked our visit to Hawes with the Wensleydale creamery and fabulous antique shops as well as good shops for nice food. We would definitely recommend this cottage to others and look forward to coming back again.

Contact Judith Dower to book. A 2 person 10% discount (one bedroom) is available during non-peak weeks. Week bookings are Sat to Sat and short breaks are welcome all year round. If booking more than 8 weeks in advance, a non-refundable deposit of £90 is payable. If within 8 weeks, or for a short break, full amount payable on booking. 3 nt short breaks are 70% of week price, 2 nts are £15 less than 3 nt price.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday, depart by 10am, arrive 3pm (4pm in peak weeks). Arrival dates may be flexible in non-peak times, contact Judith to ask.

Outside: A small patio is directly outside the back door, with two sets of steps down to an enclosed, private lawned garden with borders. Garden chairs are provided, with two little tables stored in the outhouse, and a large parasol for sunny days. Beautiful views towards the hills. To the side of the house, parking for one car, parking for further cars in the main part of the village, 30m away. The garage to the side of the house belongs to the owner, but bikes and hiking equipment etc may be stored there if agreed on booking. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedlinen and teatowels are included, sorry, personal towels are not included. Property is professionally cleaned before every booking. All electric and oil for heating is included.
