Set in a small but thriving village and within its own fully enclosed garden, entry to the property is via electric gates where the block-paved driveway offers private parking for two vehicles (with further space outside if needed).

The house can accommodate a maximum of 5 adults and a baby (a Mothercare travel cot and high-chair can be supplied free of charge if required). Fully equipped with all the creature comforts to enhance your stay; a fully fitted kitchen with microwave, dishwasher etc. leads you into to the vaulted roof lounge/diner where entertainment is supplied via a Sony stereo system, DVD player and Digital TV including High Definition (HD) - we even have some kids toys and board games for those moments the children aren't only interested in their iDevices. There is also free high-speed WiFi internet access available throughout the house.

Step down from the lounge into the large and airy conservatory and breakfast room boasting views across the private swimming pool (which will be heated for the 2017 season) to the covered terrace housing a built-in charcoal BBQ, a full-size fridge & summer kitchen and seating for six people. Combined with the large pool-side patio it all makes alfresco dining and long lazy evenings the order of the day!

To the front of the property there's off-road parking for multiple cars and plenty of space within the grounds for ball games so there's plenty to keep the children and adults alike occupied.

About Helen, John & Family

Your hosts are John & Helen. We brought the property as a holiday home for ourselves after a long search in 2004. Nine years ago we came out for a month to repair the garden walls and do some general decoration and just forgot to go back to the UK. The villagers made us exceptionally welcome, our children were enrolled in the local school and have now spent the majority of their life and schooling in France and have been the driving force behind us remaining here. We have since moved house to the other side of the village and our aim is that each of our guests enjoys their time at Chex les Roux as much as we have. We look forwards to welcoming you all.

We lead an active life and the property is ideally suited to that with easy access to all the beaches, forests, cycle paths etc. within the area. However, for those who wish to merely relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, the private grounds and pool are ideal.

Notes on accommodation: The property has been inspected by the Charente Maritime Tourist Board and classified "3 Etoiles - 5 Personne" (classification no: 01701017-33919-0031). This guarantees excellent situation and facilities. Well behaved pets may be accepted, please contact the owners in advance for further details. Free WiFi internet is available. We have various bicycles available for our guests to use; gents, ladies, kids and a child seat; all are free of charge, just let us know at the time of booking and we'll do our best to meet your needs (please note, as we have a limited number of bikes we cannot guarantee to always meet your exact needs). Outside: Large enclosed gardens mainly set to lawn with trees and shrubs. There is a large rear patio area surrounding the private swimming pool (10m x 5m, 2m deep at deepest point). Separate terrace and summer kitchen/BBQ area. The house is located in a small thriving village, so the views from the gardens overlook the fields and other houses. Utility Room: Large garage/utility room with tiled floor, sink, large fridge/freezer & oven. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bed linen, towels and tea-towels provided. Guests are required to clean property before departure unless prior arrangements for departure cleaning service have been made (at extra cost - paid locally to housekeeper). Great holiday

We had a lovely time the facilities at the property were excellent a real home from home with the added luxury of a heated pool which was great. It was peaceful and private. John and Helen were on hand if we needed them. A lovely holiday in all ways thoroughly recommend

We have stayed here many times, and it never fails to help us capture the very essence of France.

When you arrive at Chez Les Roux, you immediately feel as if you have arrived home. Whether your plan is to visit the many local towns and villages, of which there are so many to choose from, or you prefer to stay and relax at the Gite it is simply perfect.

The conservatory is a wonderful place to eat, overlooking as it does the pool which provides a superb backdrop. The summer kitchen with its outside grill offers a tremendous opportunity for eating al fresco in the way we all dream of in the UK, but somehow is so difficult to achieve. The sink and the fridge allow for running back and for to the kitchen to be kept to a minimum so everyone can really enjoy the experience.

Try to visit to visit the local markets and buy some of the local produce. There are also plenty of excellent supermarkets available, but they lack the charm and the sense of achievement that you will gain from visiting the markets.

We have always found the locals to be incredibly friendly, not to mention tolerant. For those who wish to use their French, this is the place to come as there is little English spoken here so no matter what little French you have, every word is greatly appreciated and you will quickly come to love the sense of France that this area brings.

If the mood takes you away from the Gite, there are so many beautiful places to visit it is hard to name them all. The best beaches can be found to the north of Royan, which is just about an hour away. Around Royan you can find the long stretches of beach where parking can be found together with the usual amenities, for less commercialised seafront head a little further north to the Cote Sauvage where the coastline is truly spectacular. If you take some cycles with you it will be a day well spent.

The local facilities are also worth a visit and a trip to Les Antilles will not disappoint. The many local restaurants cater for all tastes and in the main represent great value for money.

The Gite is equipped with everything you will need and John & Helen are delighted to help you with recommendations and advice.

Lovely villa

Amazing! Everything we wished for and more! Can't wait till next time x

The house and pool are everything we could have wished for. The area is beautiful with loads more for the kids to do then we first thought (even though they mainly loved to live in the pool). It felt like being at home and we didn't want to leave. Loved waking up to a view of the pool and garden every morning.

Fabulous relaxing holiday!

John and Helen have a beautiful house that we were very fortunate to relax in. Beautiful walks in the evening around the hamlet and close to everything we needed.

The bikes gave us the opportunity to explore the area and the local supermarket was only 10 minutes away by bike.

The pool kept the kids entertained for the full 2 weeks and allowed us to relax and enjoy the outside space.

Thank you John and Helen for a fantastic stay and we will definitely return to you again

Relaxing holiday

Good standard of accommodation in a friendly community. Property has a homely feeling with excellent facilities, everything you need for a relaxing holiday. Plenty of outside area, including an outdoor kitchen with bbq, fridge, washing maching and a large table and chairs. Conservatory is an added bonus which we used all the time. It overlooked the pool so an ideal room to chill in. Good size pool. Property was clean, well maintained and owners John and Helen very friendly and accommodating. Try Auberge du Moulin for good quality food at a reasonable price. Would recommend this accommodation.

Special interest holidays:

We are located within easy reach of the world famous wine regions of Bordeaux, Margaux, Pauillac and St Emillion as well as the wonderful town of Cognac where Courvoisier, Martell, Remy Martin & Hein will welcome you for a visit and tasting; family attractions such as Futuroscope and The Valley of the Monkeys at Poitiers and the world famous "Dune du Pilat" (the largest sand dune in Europe). For the more adventurous visitors (and weather permitting), the owners can even arrange for a tour of the area in a light aircraft, jet turbine helicopter or a ride in a hot air balloon! If you own your own aircraft and would like to visit us we can offer free landing and parking, a free 'meet & greet' service with transport to/from the airstrip (5 mins from property), arrange AVGAS and help arrange hire cars etc. if required.

Coast/Beach:

Chez les Roux is close to many beautiful beaches along the coast and the islands just off-shore. All boast long stretches of clean, soft sand and as many are protected under the Conservertoire du Littoral (the society to protect the coastline), the scenery is unspoilt and quite beautiful. There are beaches to suit all tastes, from surfers’ paradise to family friendly. The closest beach is 40 mins drive and La Palmyre Zoo with it's world famous conservation programs is an hours drive.

Travel:

The property is located equidistant from Bordeaux and La Rochelle airports, both approx. 1 hour's drive away and served by British Airways, Air France, easyJet, Ryanair, Flybe and Jet2. We are ten minutes drive from J36 of the A10. Travel time by car from Calais is approx. 7.5 hours and from Cherbourg/Caen approx. 5 hours. The owner's can arrange for collection from the airports (at additional cost), however, your own car (or a hire car) is strongly recommended.

Please ensure you inform us and obtain our approval if you want to bring any pets PRIOR to booking. A 25% non-returnable deposit requested upon booking. Final balance becomes due 60 days (approx. 8 weeks) before holiday commencement.
