Casa del Sole is a converted stable house set in abundant fruit groves in the beautiful region of Emilia Romagna. Just 50 minutes from the centre of Bologna and Modena. This location offers the perfect base to enjoy your holiday in Italy as it is situated in the centre of many important cities of Art. The house is characteristic, with its vaulted ceilings of the antique stable and offers breathtaking views over the valleys and mountains of the Apennines. The house sleeps up to 12 people comfortably as it is offers 5 double bedrooms, plus a further open-plan space with 2 single beds, 3 bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a spacious living room, with open fireplace, an outside covered seating area, which sits up to twenty people as well as a barbeque and spacious swimming pool. There is also a tree-house in the garden for the children. The village of Guiglia, with restaurants, shops, swimming pools and tennis courts is within walking distance. Whereas the pretty towns of Vignola and Zocca are a 15 minute drive away.
I was born in 1964 in England and came to Italy as a textile designer for a large fashion house at the end of my studies. Twenty years, a husband and three children later and I am still here! I moved to this house in 2007 and travel to Bologna from this base daily.
Miriam Greaves purchased this villa in 2007
We chose a property in this location as it mid-way between Bologna and Modena where both me and my husband work. The attraction of living in the hills is that in the stifling hot Italian summers, here in the hills the temperature remains fresh and the absence of mosquitos makes evenings spent outside pleasant. we are situated on the borders of a Regional Park "Sassi di Roccamalatina" and the views are breath-taking. There are many well-organised walks around the park and the house itself lies on one of these routes. The house itself is an ex-stable, with its original vaulted ceilings and a splendid kitchen, offering views of the valley as well as the pool and garden. Incidently the house was restored by the same architect used by Pavarotti!
Despite being on the borders of a Regional Park, the town of Vignola, which is famous for its cherries is only a 15 minute drive away. Vignola has many supermarkets, a cinema, a castle worth visiting and a bowling alley. The house is situated within the small and tranquil village of Monteorsello and offers peace and tranquillity but has a happy closeness to the corner shop and village bar which is situated just at the end of the drive and is a life-saver as it is open every day except Thursdays and sells just about everything! The nearby town of Guiglia has a public pool and a castle as well as a village square offering splendid views of Vignola. The house is a treasure trove for children who can sleep up in the eaves, as well as playing on the tree-house outside.
Just finished packing the car after 2 magnificent weeks in Monteorsello. Endless days of sunshine allowed us to enjoy the fantasic facilities in the garden.. the pool in particular was a huge hit with the children- and the "big" children. Thankyou for opening your house to us. We really had a super time.

Ciao Miriam & Antonello!late night before departure tomorrow morning-we all want to stay here & never go home! We've had a lovely time in your beautiful home, the children loved the pool. We've enjoyed cooking in your brill kitchen & seeing all around this area. Trips to Bologna, Padova, Venice and the Maranello museum. This is a beautiful part of Italy-we'll be back! PS. You have a great selection of books!

We've very much enjoyed our stay in this beautiful family house! The kids (aged 3-11) liked the pool and the garden a lot and we also loved to swim and sit next to the pool and relax. The Modena region is not very well known and really beautiful. The good thing is that it's not overthrown with tourists, the backside is that some attractions are a bit difficult to find..But hey, it's holiday so who cares driving up another hill! The Italian food was the best. In Giuglia and the many small villages nearby plenty nice restaurants and pizza/pasta take aways to eat in the garden. The only minor point for us was that the bedrooms at the 2nd floor are a bit uncomfortable for adults because of the low ceiling, and noisy for the floor below.
We had a really lovely holiday just outside Guiglia, in the heart of this small village.
We were 3 families holidaying together, 6 adults and 6 children between the age of 10 and 18. The space was perfect for our group, the garden and pool absolutely amazing. All our meals were taken under the fantastic pergola, and we could all comfortably stretch along the large table.
The house itself is lovely, with a very homely feel to it. This is someone's house - not a neutral rented accommodation. We loved it.
The only bit in the description that didn't hold true was about the mosquitoes: we were all bitten and I would come prepared for this (as we were) - but the opposite would be unusual in most of Europe in August, so don't believe anyone telling you there won't be mosquitoes in France, Italy or Spain!
We spent a day in Bologna which was really beautiful and interesting, and another afternoon in Maranello (Ferrari museum) and Modena - both very nice too. Otherwise we mostly stayed in the village and enjoyed the house, the pool, the garden, played cards, and had great local food - either self-prepared or at local restaurants.
Everyone told us before going that this part of Italy is the best for food - it is true.
We would definitely go back.
After 2 days in Bologna we headed to the hills to spend a fantastic week at Miriam's lovely family home. The facilities were fantastic and the pool was perfect for what was a very hot week. Miriam was always on the end of the phone for tips and advice but never intrusive. We managed to find some lovely local restaurants which offered great value and also a great opportunity for our kids to enjoy real, Italian cuisine. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
Having booked Casa Del Sole on the basis that it sounded so nice, we were not disappointed.
The house was clean, well equipped and nicely furnished, and we felt at home straight away.
The pool and garden were wonderful places to relax after a day’s sightseeing .
Bologna is a beautiful city, but Modena is just as interesting and much less crowded.
Rocca di Vignola was well worth a visit – it is a very imposing building and great fun to explore.
We did not sample any of the local restaurants as there was no shortage of delicious local produce to prepare and enjoy eating in the garden with a glass or two of wine.
The owners , Miriam & Antonello were very welcoming and extremely helpful (coming out to fix the house alarm in the early hours of the morning being an example).
This is a great house in a lovely unspoilt area which we thoroughly enjoyed visiting and would definitely like to make a return visit.
Beautiful home in the Italian countryside. Perfect for an adventurous, active family.
