Awarded 4* by the tourist board, our villa has a quality feel and all the furnishings and fittings are new; it is large, spacious and airy with a wealth of exposed beams and stone work adding to its rustic charm. The exterior of the property has two large terraces, one in shade for comfortable breakfasts and lunches and another for relaxed drinks early evening. There is a large pool with paved surroundings providing ample space for sunbathing and reading. It is set in a private garden with space for children to play or for those with a little more energy. The village of Brkac has a kanoba serving organic food just a 5 minute walk from the villa, and a 10 minute walk takes you to the local winery where the wine can be purchased for a song. Two of the most historic towns in Istria are on the doorstep with Motovun a 5 minute drive away and Grosjnan approx 15 minutes. There are beaches and small coastal towns within 20-30 minutes drive. For walkers and cyclists it's a dream destination. There are also a host of top quality vineyards for those interested in local wine and 3 restaurants in the area have been listed in France in the Worlds Top Restaurants.

About Jayne Espley
We have lovingly restored this beautiful stone house as both a holiday home for ourselves and our friends and family as well as to share with other holiday makers. It has been furnished as a home as opposed to a holiday let with this in mind. Being a qualfied interior designer means that the quality of finish really mattered and I am hoping that what we have achieved reflects this.
Jayne Espley purchased this Villa in 2006
Why Jayne Espley chose Brkač
We fell in love with Istria during a holiday in 2006 and on the only rainy day of a 2 week stay decided to go searching for property. The stone house in Brkac which we have now completely restored caught our eye, partly because of its potential to create a beautiful and private holiday hideaway and mainly because of its situation. Villa Monte has extensive and very private grounds around it with uninterrupted views of the rolling Istrian hills which take your breath away. To the east of the property, beyond the vineyards and olive groves there are views of Motovun just two miles away. The location provides the best of both worlds - the privacy that most villa holiday makers crave combined with accessibility of tourist destinations like Motovun, Grosjnan and Porec. For cyclists or food and wine connoisseurs, there is a choice of top quality vineyards for wine tasting and good restaurants right on the doorstep.
What makes this Villa unique
Whilst the property resides within a small hamlet, there is still the convenience of a local farmer, only a 5 minute walk away, who is happy to sell his wine by the litre and Toni's, the village konoba (taverna) is open every day. About a mile away, there is a village convenience store which sells all the basics. Motovun is a 10 minute drive and Grosjnan is a 20 minute drive away. Larger supermarkets and the seaside are in Porec, about 25 minutes away. The house is built on 3 levels. Each bedroom has its own bathroom and there is a large kithen/dining room as well as 2 separate terraces. There is broadband and internet access and the house is finished to a high standard. The garden has been professionally landscaped and benefits from a swimming pool with ample space for sunbathing.

Relax in style!
Great first impressions from the moment you open the front door and nothing disappointed us thereafter. A beautifully appointed villa with every possible amenity you could hope for during your holiday. The layout of the villa and quality of finish is superb matched by a wonderful view of the surrounding countryside. The pool and outdoor space, including BBQ terrace, ensured that we didn't have to venture far from the villa. The setting of the villa ensures a peaceful environment yet a short distance away is the beautiful village of Motovun with various dining options. The local agents clearly take a pride in managing the property and were only too happy to help and ensure that everything was to our liking. When we were staying there, Croatia was experiencing a significant heatwave but the full air conditioning ensured we were comfortable throughout our stay. No hesitation to recommend this villa and we would love to return.
It's always wonderful to hear that families have a lovely time and appreciate the space and beauty of the surroundings. You are very welcome to make a return visit any time.
Fantastic house in a beautiful location
Villa Monte was a fantastic place to holiday in Istria. Our first time in Croatia but we'll be back again. The villa was great for our family of 5 with teenage kids. It's very comfortable with everything you need in a well kitted out kitchen and outside BBQ area. The air con was a real god send as it was very hot. Pool was beautiful and was cleaned twice while we were there. Beautiful views from the pool and the upstairs terrace.
We visited Motovun several times and ate in Konoda Mondo. It's so picturesque. We also visited Groznjan and Oprtalj for lunch / dinner. Our favourite was Grosjan where you can sit in the cafe Arta and eat cake and watch the sun go down. We also did wine tasting in Fakin and Tomas wines nearby and took a trip to Porec and Vrsar on the coast.
Overall it was very relaxing and tranquil.
Thanks for your kind feedback Alison. You have made us feel very envious as you visited all our favourite places. We can't wait to go back and visit next month. Thanks again. You are welcome to stay again any time.
Excellent - highly recommended.
Your villa was amazing and even better than in the pictures. We loved its peach and tranquility and the fact it looked over the forests with nothing in view for miles and no lights at night. The stars and bats flying over the pool at night were great. The villa and pool were so lovely that we didn't do much during the day but lazed about and went up to the villages for a meal in the late afternoon/evening. Motovun, Groznjan and Oprtalj were amazing. I especially liked Oprtalj and we had a great meal at the taverna in town. Please recommend it to your guests - it is called Konoba Oprtalj/Taverna portole (seems to have 2 names!). Also went to Toni's which we really liked and had a good meal.
We must have seen 2 mosquitoes and didn't have to use any spray or put any insect killer on and only used the air con in our bedroom at night. You get a lovely breeze on the hill in the villa and because it is an old house doesn't seem to get too hot. Barbara and Andrej were charming and very helpful generally especially helping me find a dentist when I a problem and giving us directions when leaving.
Thank you so much for taking the time to tell us about your stay in Villa Monte. We are thrilled when our guests love our Villa and beautiful Istria as much as we do. Thanks for the recommendation. You are welcome back any time.
Immaculate, stylish and with amazing views!
As a family of four with two teenage children, this was the perfect villa. A bedroom each on three floors with en-suite facilities. The villa had air conditioning throughout and was very well equipped. The pool area was spotless with outdoor shower, sunbeds and parasols. The view from the villa was spectacular and a wonderful sight to wake up to each morning.
The area in Istria has so much to offer and one week was not enough to explore properly. The hilltop town 'Motovun' was beautiful with craft shops and pavement cafes. Groznjan was similar, quieter and just as beautiful. Both with cobbled streets and sweeping views of the lucious green surrounding countryside and vineyards. Coastal places were within 45 mins reach to include; Porec, Rovinj and Vrsar. All unspoilt with an array of cobbled streets, cafes and craft shops. Boats bobbed up and down on the deepest blue sea water at all three coastal towns.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful villa with us! Our first of many visits to Istria!
It is wonderful to hear when families have a lovely experience at our villa. Thank you so much for this positive feedback. Whilst this family state that it was perfect for a family of four, we can accommodate six people very comfortably. On previous occasions three couples have stayed with us, as have larger families of up to four children as there is a spacious double bedroom and bathroom on each of the three floors.
A beaufiful villa in wonderful surroundings, the villa was gorgeous and spotlessly clean with stunning views over the garden, pool & valley, a wonderful hidden gem, but with easy reach to some marvelous villages and within 20 minutes to the coast, we would highly recommend a stay in this tranquil villa and village in Croatia
Many thanks for your very kind words. It is always nice to know our guests had a lovely time and enjoyed our property and the surrounding area every bit as much as much as we do.
You are welcome to go back any time as many of our guests are repeat visitors to us.
Lovely, spacious villa
The villa is immaculate, spacious, in a quiet hamlet, with stunning views over the surrounding country side. Five family member's stayed at the villa for just over a week, exploring the local area, as well as relaxing days by the pool. I would recommend exploring the local towns of Motovum, Buzet and Pazin. The area particular know for it's truffles, which can be sampled in most of the local restaurants.
We had a very enjoyable holiday.
Special interest holidays: Istria has something for everyone. If you are looking looking for culture, there is a multitude of historic towns and villages to explore. For foodies, it is of note that Istria is a renowned area for truffle growing and there are a wealth of local konobas and restaurants offering fabulous truffle based delicacies at a fraction of the price at home. Wine tasting is another very pleasant pastime. For those looking to be more adventure there are many caves worth a visit, and if you are a keen walker or cyclist - this is the dream destination with the whole area set near many national parks. If you are a golfer, there is a very good championship golf course in Umag about a 1 hour drive away and another on the Brijuni island which is a wonderful place to spend the day whether you are a golfer or not but probably isn't for the serious golfer with peacocks and deer to be seen all over the course. Coast/Beach: There is a multitude of lovely coastal towns and beaches all within a 30 minute drive from Villa Monte, for example the seaside town of Porec is only a 25-30 min drive away. Travel: There is a choice of airports from which you can easily reach us and the motorway systems are efficient and well maintained; it is fair to say that you rarely see the sort of traffic jams typical of other popular areas. The property can be reached from Pula in about 45 minutes, Rijeka in 90 minutes and from airports in Italy - Venice 3 hours and Trieste 90 minutes respectively. Another option is to fly to Venice and then take the ferry from Venice to Pula and pick up a car there. Distances: The cultural towns of Motovun and Grosjnan are on your doorstep being a 10 and 15 minute drive away. Seaside towns like Porec and Rovinj have pretty harbours, cobbled streets to explore and a multitude of places to eat and drink. There is a Roman amphitheatre in Pula which is worth a visit. Boat trips to Venice and the Brijuni Islands are possible from many harbours. Further Details: The closest village is a 10 minute drive or 20 minute walk away and has a grocery store for basics; there is also a bank and a butcher and a place to buy good quality wine. For a family shop, there is a wide choice of large supermarkets in nearby Porec along with many bars and restaurants for your enjoyment. Istria has a long hot season starting in late April/early May and running until late September. In the winter it's also a lovely place to visit if you are into walking. The views and countryside are stunning and the restaurants cosy with open fires and a welcoming smile from their owners.
