Villa Castano

This villa has two double bedrooms: one with double bed, the other with twin beds. Both with ceiling fans, air-conditioning, central heating, large fitted wardrobes and luxury bed linen. Fabulous views from every window. Each bedroom has a TV point and aerial*.

Bathroom: beautifully tiled with luxury fitted shower, heated towel rail and radiator. Spectacular views.

Kitchen: Fully fitted, modern and very well equipped, with large fridge/freezer, split level electric oven with eye level grill, gas and electric hob, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave. The kitchen window overlooks the Moorish courtyard.

Living Room: Comfortably furnished. Ceiling fan, Satellite TV, video/DVD recorder, (the owners have a library of videos and DVDs available), wood burning stove and radiator.

Enjoy the dramatic views of the Contraviesa mountains from the living room and terrace.

Cortijo El Castano

Sunbathe by the private pool in the peace and quiet amongst the olive groves of Tijola, near Orgiva, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Enjoy the wonderful sunsets and star gaze at night, wtih a glass of wine after enjoying a BBQ. Buy your vegetables and fresh fish from the small local market town of Orgiva. Visit the white washed Berber villages which cling to the southern slopes of Spain’s highest mountain range or visit the Alhambra Palace and go shopping or eat out in the famous city of Granada. Recently described by Chris Stewart in his best selling book 'Driving Over Lemons' this rural area offers peace and tranquillity with easy access to the bars, restaurants and supermarkets in Orgiva. Just 1 hour south of Granada and 1 hr 40 mins east of Malaga, with the coast and golf only 35 mins away and skiing in the winter, just 1 hour 15 mins, the villa has been designed with the 16th century Alhambra Palace in mind, but with all the luxuries and comforts of the 21 century. About Zoe Cawthorn

Nigel and I (Zoe) met in 1998 and realised that we both had a desire to live in the sun. We started looking for our dream place in the year 2000. The minute we discovered this beautiful area of Spain, we knew that this is where we wanted to be. We bought the property in 2003 and spent the next 3 years renovating it to bring it up to date. We wanted to make sure that it was updated to a high level of comfort. We have been pleased with the comments people have given us about how much they have enjoyed the property. As we live next door we are always on hand to fix any problems as soon as possible.

Why Zoe Cawthorn chose Órgiva

The location and views were what attracted us to the property! We knew that we would be renovating any property that we bought, so our main concern was the views and the location. Just two and a half kilometres from the market town of Origva and with spectacular views of the mountains, we find that everyone who stays here loves it. Some of the best walking areas of Europe are all around. It is so easy to access so many places from here - the beach 30 mins drive and the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada just over an hours drive away. It is so easy to access motorways to visit Granada, the coast, Cordoba and Sevilla. The mountain villages are within easy reach - the property ideally located for most things.

What makes this villa unique

The house is surrounded by olive groves, orange and lemon trees, avacado and pomigranate trees. The water system that the Moors introduced still runs down from the Sierra Nevada mountains to this day, which means the area is unusually green for Spain. We had a blank canvass when we bought this house so after visiting Granada and Morocco many times, we gave it the style that is so right for this area - the last place the Moors lived before returning back to Morocco. You will see some of the features that we have put in, on the website, but you will see many more when you visit the house. We brought many pieces of furniture from Morocco including a fountain which is in the small courtyard.

A large thank you for our lovely and relaxing holiday. From the luxury of the villa to the beauty of the garden, we can't imagine a better place for Nayana to have had her first holiday abroad. It has been completely stress-free as she has settled so well here, thoroughly enjoying splashing in the pool.

We shall miss the jasmine filled air, star filled skies and the only "noise' being the birdsong.

It has felt like a real haven.

We will certainly recommend this home from home to all our friends.

Hope to be back here again one day.

Whilst not being a large town Orgiva, capital of the Alpujarras holds a weekly market in the town. There are many tapas bars, restaurants and small supermarkets. There are also 2 health food shops and a herbalist pharmacy. Enjoying many fiestas throughout the year, this is very much a Spanish town.

Lanjaron is a spa town, where the Spanish have enjoyed spa treatments for over 100 years. The minerals found in the different waters are said to be an aid for any number of ailments. Visit the fascinating city of Granada with its spectacular Alhambra Palace, and the old Moorish quarters of the Albaicin. Shop in the town centre or just enjoy the hustle and bustle of the street restaurants and cafés in this ancient student city.

Just 35 mins away are the relaxing beaches of the Costa Tropical. The white villages built by the Moors have a charm and style unique to this area. Spend the day visiting different villages and discovering some of the local crafts, still practiced in the region.

This is a holiday place for the adventurous families or couples who want to get away from it all. Many historic places can be reached from this unique area. There is a spa town only 15 minutes drive away and many tourist attractions within half an hours drive. The area properties and area are in a romantic setting. If you want to do any walking or sports this is the ideal place, including kayaking or skiing etc.

Nigel and Zoe give this property their personal touch which is apparent throughout the villa and indeed the holiday experience there. The Villa is well situated and their local knowledge and helpfulness is first class.

I could not rate this high enough and would have no hesitation in going back or recommending to anyway.

Pleasant villa with lovely pool and beautiful gardens. Friendly and helpful hosts.

We had a lovely time in this comfortable Moroccan styled villa. It is well maintained and furnished to a high standard. We enjoyed having sole use of the garden with very easy access to a lovely swimming pool. The villa is well designed and has 2 covered outside eating areas . The kitchen was well equipped and we were grateful for the swimming pool towels as well as bathroom towels . The hosts Nigel and Zoe live in the attached house and are friendly and genuinely helpful.

It is 2km from Orgiva, which is a quiet Spanish town but has a fantastic Moroccan restaurant. You need a car to make the most of the area and there are some lovely little mountain villages to explore near by. It's easy to reach Granada for a day trip and equally easy to get to the coast.

Weather was between 23 and 29 degrees for us but it had been much hotter the previous week.

So thumbs up from us.

The villa is a labour of love

We enjoyed a relaxing week in the villa, which is situated in a lovely quiet, rural setting with views across the valley. The property has been carefully designed with Moorish details even down to the wardrobe doors.

The villa is part of an extension to the main house where Zoe and Nigel live. They were both very helpful and accommodating during our stay. However, we weren't aware that they lived not "next door" but actually were part of the building, with their part of the property overlooking the pool.

The finish to the house was lovely and it was all spotless. We were disappointed that there were only mosquito nets in the two bedroom windows. This meant that all the living room windows had to remain shut in the evenings. This is something that could be easily remedied and would improve the quality of a holiday.

The internet was a bit rubbish, which was probably a good thing as it forced us to read books, play cards and "get away from it all". The garden provides lots of shaded areas to relax in and read a book.

We've given it four stars as we really enjoyed our week in the area. We explored the local white villages above Orgiva in the mountains and also had a fantastic day out in Granada. Nigel and Zoe have provided a comprehensive and helpful guide of the area.

Owner's Response: Hi Alison We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our villa, the decor and the fantastic area and scenery. The apartment is attached to the main house (albeit with its own entrance and private terrace) but the villa is detached with its own entrance and private back garden. The further gardens are shared with the apartment. We have planted palm trees, Oleander and other plants between the pool and the house to give the pool privacy. If you had let us know that you felt that you were overlooked whilst in the pool we would have gone to stay in our house on the coast. Many people tell us that they enjoy spending the evenings sitting on the private patio area of the villa looking up at the stars, which of course is in the open. The Spanish and UK TV, the board games and cards etc are there for people to enjoy so we are glad you found those fun. We upgraded our internet only last week to a new system but as we live in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada it is difficult to get the sort of speed that you would expect in some parts of the UK. Although strangely enough, until recently, we received better coverage than my son who lives just outside of London! As I mentioned to you before you came on holiday, it is very unlikely for us to get mosquitos at approximately 450 metres above sea level, but having told me that you react badly to mosquito bites I recommended that using the plug in machines definitely prevent them coming in, even with the windows and doors wide open. It is a shame that you forgot to do this. We always ask people when they arrive to let us know of any problems they find during their stay so that if at all possible we can put them right. Thank you for your suggestions and we will certainly speak to future guests to find out if they feel the same.

Delightful villa fantastic holidy

We found Villa Castano to be a wonderful enjoyable place to relax and unwind. The location was perfect for us away from hustle and bustle but only a short drive away to the local town to enjoy eating out or just to sit and have a coffee and watch the world go by. The villa was immaculate, well maintained and had everything we needed.

Zoe and Nigel made us very welcome and I would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and relatives and have in fact already done so.

Fantastic beautiful hideaway

If you're after a little seclusion with a beautiful view and everything you could possibly need for a week of peace then this is the place to be. With a great supermarket just 10 minutes drive you can stock up for the week and not have to leave the villa if this takes your fancy. Myself and my partner made the most of the BBQ and private pool and totally relaxed. Zoe was fantastic before and during our stay.

Lots to do around Orgiva in the cooler months I would definitely look to go back!

Yes it is great to be able to have a BBQ which can be done almost every day of the year in this area! Some people, as you did, like to shop once and then relax for the rest of the week. Others like to spend some of the time relaxing by the pool and then go visiting places like the Alhambra in Granada, or the unique Moorish villages and potter around the indoor market, the Thursday morning market and the smaller shops and supermarkets in Orgiva, buying what they want fresh every day.
