Tranquilly beautiful apartment close to the sea in rural Normandy, half an hour from Cherbourg.
The Chateau d'Aumeville-Lestre is a quintessentially French, 18th Century Chateau. It is near the sea, in beautiful countryside, standing in its own parkland, with avenues of trees stretching to each point of the compass. It is a simply beautiful location, perfect for a romantic getaway.
The main bedroom has an enormous and very comfortable four poster bed ;and the bathroom has both a rolltop bath and a separate shower and underfloor heating
The apartment is the longtime and very personal holiday home of a retired lawyer and is full of books, DVDs, and CDs ;there is both UK and French TV but there is currently no internet in the apartment (though it is freely available 5 minutes drive away)and the mobile signal is good to adequate, for speech and texting .Candles and logs are normally provided. The high-ceilinged centrally heated rooms are warm in winter and cool in summer.
You can eat outside on the terrace on sunny days: on cooler days you may choose to eat either in the kitchen or at the octagonal marble topped dining table in the salon
Bikes are also usually available (free of charge )and are reasonably well maintained but are used at your own risk .Electric bike hire is available (at 18E a day) about 8km away at Quettehou
This wonderful place ,however , is not a Holiday Inn and you should not expect it to be. We do not dust the six chandeliers weekly and there may be the odd bit of peeling paint ,as in any old Chateau.
NB There is also the possibility of a second, twin bedded bedroom, two floors up and not ensuite. It is a former maids room( a "chambre de bonne"):each apartment owner is allocated one. It is accessed via the main staircase immediately outside the apartment door: those using it share the bathroom in the apartment itself
The apartment is only 5 minutes drive from the small seaside resort of Quineville ,which has shops selling everything you might reasonably need ,plus a couple of bar-restaurants (including the Hotel de la Plage which has free internet with your morning coffee and croissants)
There is also horse riding, golf, tennis ,sailing and watersports at Quineville ;plus an excellent boulangerie/ patisserie.

About Geoffrey Still
I live in Winchester and the Apartment is my base in France. Accordingly you will find it extremely well equipped with much that you would not normally find in a rented property. You will find much advice on great restaurants, secluded beaches, picnic spots and day trip venues in helpful guides left out for you.
Geoffrey Still purchased this Apartment in 2002
Why Geoffrey Still chose Aumeville-Lestre
I bought the Apartment in 2002 but I have known it since 1991 when it was decorated by the well known British interior decorator David Carter who used it as his international showcase. I bought it because I always wanted to live in a Chateau!
What makes this Apartment unique
This Apartment is the most romantic place that could be imagined - four poster bed, open log fire, candelabra, underfloor heating, rolltop bath, park and lake outside, outdoor living on the terrace, view of the sea.

Great secluded, stylish and romantic place with a very good athmosphere
The place is very nicely decorated and is spacy for two people, but could also accomodate four if you take the extra bedroom.
It is a perfect getaway to relax and unwind in your own bubble. If the weather is nice it is great to have breakfast in the garden or make a walk. The views from the chateau are fantastic.
The landlord is friendly and easy going.
The through road is not so great for cycling because the cars drive very fast so it is best to take smaller roads.
The nearby coast and landscape is beautiful and there are enough facilities and restaurants (some very nice) in nearby villages.
The only thing is that we feel that at some spots the place would benefit from some tidying. Having said so, this is also part of the charm so don't let this put you off.
We are new to Owners Direct so it was so pleasing to get such a lovely review (our first!)
I will try to be even tidier in future!!
The weather on the Cherbourg Peninsula is similar to the Channel Islands, both warmed by the Gulf Stream. Primroses come early, palm trees are grown widely, and fuchsias reach the eaves of the famous Hotel des Fuchsias in nearby St Vaast. Winters are short and sharp but the Apartment is centrally heated, and there are always plenty of logs for the fire. Summers are usually balmy and never too hot.
The sea is very close and provides sandy beaches by the mile. Inland it is all lush green valleys, woods and meadows. There is history everywhere from William the Conqueror in 1066 to the 1944 Normandy landings. On a sunny day, walk in the grounds and then cycle to the sea (1.5km) On a winter's night, choose a book from the hundreds on the bookshelves and read by the fire, or listen to music, or watch a DVD.
Brittany Ferries have year-round ferry services to Cherbourg, Caen, Le Havre and St Malo from Poole and Portsmouth, and seasonal fast craft services to Cherbourg and Caen. The Chateau is a 30 minute drive from Cherbourg. You can also come via the Channel Islands. The Channel Tunnel is a 5 hour drive away. You can come by Eurostar via Paris (2 1/4 hours) and Valognes (2 3/4 hours), or you can fly to Caen, Deauville and Rennes from Paris, and then rent a car.
Within striking distance. Utah Beach, Mont St. Michel and Bayeux. Paris is 3 hours by train and the Chateaux of the Loire a 4 hour drive.
The nearby fishing ports of St Vaast and Barfleur are perfect for restaurants and shops, as is Quineville.
