About Louise Schubert

I am English and we are an international family based in Spain since 1991, except for a couple of years spent in Athens in the late 90's. We chose to make Catalonia our base after leaving Greece in 1999. We live for most of the year just outside Barcelona and enjoy Calella as mucha as we can. The Mediterranean way of life suits us and we enjoy sharing a part of our life with local and international guests, who like us are keen to enjoy and explore the wonderful Costa Brava.

Why Louise Schubert chose Baix Emporda

I came to Calella with my family when I was a child. I had always had fond memories of this delightful spot. Soon after arriving in Madrid we came to explore the Costa Brava area and I found that the heart of the village was as I remembered.

We fell in love with the the fishing village atmosphere, the beautiful coves, the clear sea, the unspoilt local countryside and the wonderful light at all times of year.

Our house is in a quiet area, 10 minutes walk away from the spectacular Botanic Gardens. The house has privileged coastal views and is set in a small development of 9 houses that enjoy community gardens and a swimming pool.

What makes this villa unique

It has been decorated and equipped with care, to meet the needs of a growing family. All friends and family that come from afar to visit, agree that we have found a spot in paradise where the stresses of life in the fast lane are easily forgotten. There is no direct street access from the house to the road and guests have the choice of two stairways to ascend before arriving at the house. It is not suitable for someone who has mobility problems. The views on arrival are worth the climb. Local supermarkets deliver shopping if needed. The garden is on two levels with a stone table in one corner which is great for children's creative activities. There is a lawn for relaxing on, a barbeque area and plenty of space for eating around the other garden tables that are available.

The villa is situated in Calella de Palafrugell, the heart of the Costa Brava. It is located on a medium steep incline which provides magnificent, unobstructed sea views. One of the largest of Palafrugell's beach resorts, Calella is famous for its pretty coves behind the fishing village with whitewashed arches on the promenade. Fishing boats on the sand and the waterfront restaurants are places to relax and enjoy the local cuisine. Development has been low-rise and low-key with everything on a human scale. Towards the eastern border of Calella the Botanical garden of Cap Roig features a great mix of local and exotic flora. Calella de Palafrugell is also known as the home of the 'havaneres', performed on the beach at a popular festival at the beginning of each summer. Calella is the perfect example of the unspoilt Costa Brava or the part of Catalonia which has escaped invasion by tour operated holiday groups and where most of the properties are owned by people from Barcelona (and some considerate foreigners). Nearby there is an abundance of idyllic coastal towns and delightful sandy coves. This region is rarely overcrowded and retains the traditional Mediterranean charm. Whether you are looking for cultural specialties or are in pursuit of other diversions like playing tennis (7 minutes by car), visiting a water park (20 minutes by car), snorkeling, sailing - or just a lazy day on the beach, this is the place!

Breath taking views in a homely villa in an idilic location

The house is great, equipped with everything you will need and plenty spacious with lots of outdoor space for long evening meals as the sun goes down. The pool is rarely busy with other guests, so will feel like it's all to yourselves. Take a scenic walk on the coastal path to Calella whilst taking in the most stunning views across the sea and over to the town harbour. There's also a near by beach of Golfet that we thoroughly enjoyed a swim during the day and watching the waves come crashing in over a picnic supper in the evening. Pure bliss. Thank you for our relaxing and beautiful stay!

The area and local beach were beautiful. However due to the closure of the local shop we were required to use the car every day- or face an almost 1 hour return walk to the gorgeous Calella de Palafrugell. The outside of the villa with the pool and garden were first class, we spent every morning breakfasting on the balcony admiring the views. The children loved the pool. Inside the villa was spacious and everything needed in a kitchen. Due to the heat, we were unable to use the top room as it was unbearably hot, despite keeping the shutters closed all day, my 18yr old and 10yr old daughters shared the bunk beds. However this might only be a problem in extremely hot weather. The owners were very helpful pre and post stay, but we did have one major complaint- wifi! This is advertised as being available, but it was a limited allowance for occasional message checking, we were unable to download e books as planned, Skype my mother, as planned, or many other things we had assumed we would be able to do with wifi. If I had known there would be little sometimes no Internet, I would have planned differently. A mixed review reflecting mixed feelings, shame about the lack of local facilities, and Wifi, an amazing beach, garden and local town.

Owner's Response: Its a pity that the local shop has not opened this season, as the property is now up for sale and this only became evident after Easter. In the past the shop opened at the end of June until the end of August. There are several ways to walk into the center of Calella, the scenic coastal path normally takes about 25 minutes and is not to be used when carrying shopping. The more direct route using the road is slightly shorter. The heat has indeed been exceptional during the early Summer. As well as using the ventilators provided, we normally create cross drafts by leaving the 3 different windows open during the night, in the top area. Keeping the awning down during the day, over the upper terrace also keeps the inner temperature lower. It is unfortunate that such a heavy internet use was desired and that the capacity required was not foreseen. These are all issues that we will take into account with future guests.

Perfect Family Villa with Stunning Coastal Views

Just back from an excellent relaxing 2 week family summer holiday exploring the Costa Brava and resting at the villa and pool. The villa listing description gave a true account of the location, layout and facilities. The villa is spacious, well equipped with plenty of private out door space including a purpose built bbq. The villa is in an excellent location within walking distance to centre of Calella. Alternatively there is a frequent bus service to the centre of town and also serving neighbouring coastal towns. The property was clean, well maintained and as described by the owners is homely. The owners were very helpful leading up to our stay and met us at the airport. We would recommend this property to friends or relatives and are hoping to visit again to see more of this beautiful area.

Perfect

Instant relaxation. Having dropped in at the supermarket on the drive from the airport, we didn't move from the house for two days. No need - everything is just perfect where you are.

A choice of three terraces! to lounge around on, all with stunning views out to sea. A large swimming pool which we had to ourselves 90% of the time. Great stereo for a bit of music with early evening drinks (You might want to bring a few CD's if you are not into Jazz or Eric Clapton). Cool barbecue area - even has parsley growing next to it to stuff in your fresh Sea Bass. Then a choice of very comfortable settees around the fire should you should want to move inside later.

Louise and Werner were there to meet us when we arrived. They quickly explained everything in the house and gave us local directions.

So when you do venture out - its a short walk straight down to one of the most breathtaking little beaches on this coast (5 mins). And an enchanting walk along the coastal path, which hugs the cliffs, in and out of tunnels, with view after view till you reach the town of Calella.

Calella is a beautiful old largely unspoilt fishing town. Our favorite restaurants were the little fish places, slightly off the beaten track ie not in the central promenade. There you need to enjoy the Ice cream place. Its a maze of little streets and bays/beaches strung out along the coast. Its typical of this beautiful unspoilt part of the Costa Brava. Lots of cliffs and coves, but this also means lots of hills and steps. If you are infirm the whole location is probably not the best place to choose. But if you are into relaxing, swimming (pool and sea), walking coast paths, cycling in the mountains, eating fish, barbecuing, drinking wine and beer - Werner even has chilled beer steins ready in the freezer! - then this could be the place for you. We were 4 adults, but this place could comfortably accommodate 8.

Writing this I just wish we were back there. Thanks Louise and Werner I'm sure we'll be back.

Happy hols

This was excellent accommodation for us with plenty of areas in the house to find our own space as we were three couples plus.

Its an attractive property inside and out, the photos don't do it justice, well kept gardens all round and excellent clean swimming pool. There is a decent nearby shop and lovely shingle/sand beach cove at the bottom of the hill, meant our teenagers could cater for themselves when necessary.

The owners were very accommodating when we had to adjust our plans, and very helpful with advice and recommendations.

Eating out I recommend the Hotel Gabi, great food at a reasonable price.

Everyone had a great time, We'd book again in a heartbeat.

The beach mentioned is the Golfet cove, an idyllic spot for snorkeling, swimming out to the rock and enjoying the magnificent coastline and views over the "Hormigas Islands" We obviously need to upgrade our photos, especially since we have enlarged our main terrace and given the outside a new coat of paint.
