About Jane Bower
Paul and Jane Bower, the owners, ran a four star Wedding and Function Venue in North Yorkshire, UK, for nine years before deciding that they would like to do something a bit less pressured in a lovely location. So they moved to the Dordogne and decided to run this gite! They have been coming to La Balade au Bois for years and it never failed to fill them with a wonderful feeling of peace and tranquillity- they are sure that it will do the same thing for you.
Jane Bower purchased this Farmhouse in 1992
Why Jane Bower chose Nabirat
The marvellous thing about La Balade au Bois with its two wonderful gites, Le Noyer and Le Chataignier, is the sense of peace and relaxation that descends on you the moment you arrive. In addition to this it is located in a small hamlet which allows you to access a little bit of true French community life. Have a walk through to chat to Mme Borde, whose small homestead is in the middle of the hamlet or other residents! Our location is just amazing- Within just 15-20mins by car you can be in some of the most well known tourist sites in the Perigord Noir. There are superb activities for all afe groups including children. Do please look at our website to find out more information on things to do and see w=during your stay in the Dordogne
What makes this Farmhouse unique
What we have always loved about the place is the history. When you see the 50cm thick stone walls, the old oak beams, the arrowslit windows you are transported back to another time. The local architect who did the original renovation plans said that he believed the original 16th c house was probably an ecclesaistical building- I really need to investigate this! Perhaps there is a connection to the 100 Years War.

A 5 star property in a beautiful location
We have just returned from a week at La Balade au Bois.
We were a group of 13 adults and these 2 adjacent properties were just perfect for a relaxing break in a beautiful part of the Dordogne.
Both properties are kitted out to the highest spec and there is nothing that hasn't been thought of but the highlight for us was the BBQ and seating area (that we nicknamed 'Cocktail Corner') adjacent to the Pool where we spent most of our time, especially the evenings where the large tables enabled us all to eat together.
The hosts, Jane & Paul, were available and very helpful but not imposing in any way.
We all had a lovely week and I can't recommend it highly enough.
A very enjoyable family Golden Wedding celebration
The property justified its 5 star rating. We numbered 18 in total ranging from 1 to 72 years in age assembled from various parts of the globe. Jane and Paul were very welcoming and helpful in accommodating everybody. There is an excellent swimming pool and adjacent covered entertaining area which rapidly became the focus of activities. Much thought has been given to facilities and equipment, the pool dishwasher and fridge were very useful! The surrounding area is charming with lots of activities for all ages. We hired bikes for a couple of very successful days which were delivered and collected. A great experience with loads of happy memories - to be recommended!
Amazing houses in beautiful location
We had an amazing time at La Balade au Bois - two beautiful, spacious and well cared for homes. We had a group of 15, ranging from a baby, four children aged from nine to teens plus 70-year-old grandad and it's fair to say we all had a fabulous time. We've walked and cycled miles, kayaked on the Dordogne, visited some beautiful towns and villages along with an entertaining day at a waterpark - we could easily have spent another couple of weeks enjoying all the sites and attractions of this wonderful region.
However it was our stay at La Balade which was at the heart of this family trip - we've all made the most of the pool and on the odd rainy afternoon there is plenty of room in the houses for everyone to play games. We've made use of the well equipped kitchens, loved the poolside barbecue area and ate together every evening under the canape.
The only slightly negative moment was a farming neighbour who was working with his tractor on a couple of evenings which was a little noisy but then, probably also to be expected when staying in the country and didn't affect the playing of card games!
We also need to mention the wonderful catering provided by Jane and Paul on my dad's 70th birthday - a really very special occasion and they're great cooks. They are extremely friendly and accommodating hosts who live discreetly on site so we only saw them when we had a question to ask or some advice about places to see. This really was a special find, thoroughly recommended and we hope to return one day.
Family holiday for 50th Birthday
Just returned from Balade au Bois. Jane and Paul extended us the warmest welcome and were very helpful cooking and doing shopping for our arrival. This is a stand out property done to the highest of standards. It is so peaceful and in a lovely area with a short drive from lots of things to do and see. It has a beautiful pool and outside area in lovely gardens.I would highly recommend Jane and Paul for any event you may have as their catering and hospitality are second to none. WE were all sorry to have to leave at the end of our holiday but we will certainly go back.
Set in a quiet, rural location, the two distinctive properties provide spacious, comfortable and wel
We visited in mid August 2018 as a group of 4 families: 8 adults and 6 children (the latter between 3 and 9 years old). Firstly, I would concur with previous reviewers that both of the properties provide first-class, comfortable accommodation. The renovations have clearly been carried out with style and sensitivity. The availability of en-suite facilities in many of the bedrooms is a particularly desirable feature when mixed families are resident.
We noticed that the WiFi signal was variable throughout the properties and non-existent in parts of the main house, and that the DVD player was broken.
The pool and barbecue area provides a focal point for cooking, dining and relaxing and we spent much of our days together in this area. It was a pleasant surprise to find both a fridge and a dishwasher adjacent to the BBQ. The pool, itself, is safe, clean and well maintained by Paul. The grounds around the properties are quite extensive and provided much opportunity for the little ones to indulge in "famous five" fantasies: from rabbit hunting and mud-pie building to, even, a mini triathlon.
Les Cabanes has a very rural feel, but the local area provides many opportunities for interesting and exciting days out. The five cyclists amongst us indulged ourselves with many outings up and down the Dordogne valley. As we had lots of little ones to entertain we found the proximity of the "veloroute" (cycle track along an old railway line) a great bonus. Other memorable local excursions included: canoeing trips on the Dordogne (talk to Jane about how to claim a discount!), the Sarlat Monkey Forest and the Waterpark.
Beautiful properties, great facilities, lovely owners, would highly recommend.
We stayed in August 2018 as a group of 19 (10 adults and 9 children aged between 2 and 8). We cannot fault the property, the whole place was amazing.
The bedrooms were all lovely and Jane helped to make sure we were able to accommodate all the children in bedrooms separate from the parents.
The swimming pool area was fantastic, there was a dishwasher, fridge, bbq, large table and chairs and garden sofas all over by the pool with a large sheltered area. There were plenty of loungers and the pool temperature was perfect which meant the kids were entertained throughout the day swimming and playing in the large garden.
Both properties had cooking facilities and fridges and then the bonus fridge in the main house meant we had plenty of space to store food and the beer and wine!
The large table inside the main house also served well for lunches inside for the kids especially when it was too hot for them.
We cycled daily to get the bread from the local boulangerie where there was also a small supermarket and there was a large supermarket only a little further away so we were able to get supplies easily.
We didn’t explore the area very much as we enjoyed being at the property but some families did make a visit to some local caves and others did some parkour locally which everyone enjoyed.
Would also recommend the local marche gourmand which is was held during the summer months and was enjoyed by everyone on the Tuesday evening.
Jane and Paul also offered to provide us with a meal for everyone on the first night (for a small price) and this was a lovey touch as saved the hassle of shopping and cooking after a day of driving and allowed us more time to get settled in and into the pool as soon as we arrived.
Overall we all had a fantastic holiday and loved the property and we would all definitely be interested in returning.
LES CABANES, NABIRAT is so well located with many of the Dordogne’s most famous sites just minutes away. Here are some of our favourites:

Château de Castelnaud. (15 mins) The Château de Castelnaud was held predominantly by the English during the 100 years war and was in direct conflict with the occupants of Château de Beynac on the opposite side of the valley. The chateau has been beautifully restored and contains a large collection of medieval weaponry. During the summer, the Château de Castelnaud has costumed re-enactments. Visit both châteaux and the stunningly beautiful and recently renovated village of Beynac-et-Cazenac for a very full day out. Followed by a walk by the Dordogne river in nearby Roque Gageac- also recently renovated.
Stay local and have a swim in the Plan D’eau du Roc Percé in Grolejac (5 mins) or visit the Insectorama museum at the same place.
Canoes & Kayaks can be hired also in Grolejac near the bridge or Cenac St Julien (5-15 mins)
Horse riding. Horse riding is available at L’Etrier de Vitrac near Sarlat or Le Centre Equestre de Sarlat (both 25mins away) or Centre Equestre de Gourdon (15 mins)
La Foret des Ecureuils- great activities: tree climbing, paintball and Via Ferrata (rock climbing trails for non-climbers). Fantastic day out just outside Sarlat (25 mins)
Visit Le Bugue (50 mins) for the water park, Aux Etangs du Bos (swimming pools and lake with lots of slides and inflatable pontoons etc), the Aquarium du Périgord Noir (the largest privately owned aquarium in Europe) and the wonderful, underground 'Crystal Cathedral' of Gouffre de Proumeyssac.
Visit the lovely 19th century living village 'Le Bournat'. This is also in Le Bugue (50 mins) but is a full day on it's own- the children will love all the activities and entertainment.
Forest adventure park at L'Appel de Forêt. This park is much bigger than many we have experienced elsewhere: 10 courses (ranging from relatively easy to hard enough to challenge dad!), 110 stations and 25 zip slides. You can stay on the park as long as you like and there is a picnic area with tables so you can make a day of your visit. The park is at Thenon, which is about 50 minutes from La Balade au Bois.
Visit the prehistoric trail along the Vézère Valley between Montignac (45-50 mins) and Les Eyzies: the cave paintings at Lascaux 4 (pre book tickets - enquire at the Office de Tourisme at Montignac), the prehistoric dwellings at the Roque St Christophe and then Forte Reignac* (the mysterious fortress built into the rock face). If you still have time, then there is always the prehistorc museum at Les Eyzies. All the sites are equally spectacular for grown ups. (*For older kids there is an exhibition of devices of torture at the Forte Reignac!) There is probably enough here to keep the prehistory enthusiasts busy for two or three days.
Quad Biking at Rev'Quad at Badefols sur Dodogne and Belves (both about 45 mins)
