This is our family beach home – we are lucky enough to visit often. It has been an amazing place to watch the kids grow up and share incredible experiences with them. My youngest daughter was only three when we built our home, she learned to swim and dive in our pool, as have many of her friends over the years. We have watched turtles lay their eggs on our beach, watched the eggs hatch, seen dolphins swim and play, made sand castles, gone snorkeling and learned to surf. We have walked our dogs on the beach at sunrise and sunset. My favorite birthdays and celebrations have been here. It is truly wonderful and we are blessed to have this home and share it with others.
Catherine Kumar purchased this villa in 2005
It is close to Puerto Escondido airport and only a beautiful hour's drive from Huatulco International airport. Puerto has fantastic food shops, surf shops and amenities. There are delicious restaurants and bars with live music in the evenings. And of course, it is home to Mexico´s premier surfing beach, Zicatela. There are also great beaches to learn surfing (and wonderful instructors), deep sea fishing, eco-tours and a huge variety of daytime activities. Cumana offered us the chance to enjoy an unspoilt beach and live on the sea. It has been an incredible experience for my family to see whales, dolphins, turtles all from our own home. We have spent incredible vacations there with friends and family, we always have magical times!
Puerto Escondido has been a firm family favorite for vacations and we absolutely LOVE the area.
Once we saw Costa Cumaná’s perfect, unspoilt beaches we knew it was THE vacation spot for family and friends -kids and adults swim in the pool, enjoy the beach, snorkel, surf and watch dolphins, pelicans and turtles. Our beautiful home, which is right on the beach, sleeps 14,and is a wonderful place to relax and have fun with the people close to you.
mis hijos y nietos quedaron fascinados, todo muy bien, el señor Lupe una finísima persona
Wonderful beach home outside of Puerto Escondido. I spent a week celebrating my 60th birthday with family and friends. We were in paradise! So relaxing, quiet and beautiful. The caretaker was wonderful and responsive. The place incredibly clean. Lovely uncrowded beach for long walks- We hired the cook which I would recommend. Her food was beyond expectation! We shared our meal preferences- everything else taken care of, even the shopping if we wished. It made for a truly relaxing, heavenly get away with little effort on our part. Would definitely go back!
Villa Lumina is a beautiful, clean, open air home right off the beach/ocean. We arrived in the early evening, and were greeted by the very friendly caretaker, Lupe, and the cook, Gloria. We had hired Gloria to cook our arrival meal for us, which proved to be delicious.
Our first impression of the house was wonderful. We are a family of ten....my husband and myself, our four grown children, and three grandchildren, and the accommodations were perfect. There was plenty of sleeping room and also, open space for us to be together as family. Lucia, the daily housekeeper, kept everything nicely cleaned. The pool was cleaned daily by Lupe, and always so inviting to just jump into.
The beach is a quiet one. You can walk for hours, and not run into anyone. It is so lovely.
The staff is Spanish speaking only, so it was good that we had our Spanish speaking daughter with us. She was able to communicate with them easily, and was given the house phone when we went into town, so that we had the ability to call a cab when we needed one. We ended up with a favorite, who was "on call" with us when we were traveling back and forth to the Villa Lumina. Town is about 9 miles away. The cost of a van cab ride for ten of us was $30 USD. each way.
I think it would be helpful to have a house book, that gives information about the area and about the house. We had no difficulty when we arrived, getting into the locked gates, but the following nights when our driver beeped his horn, there was no one on the other side of the gate to the "secure" area. We ended up climbing out of the van, walked around the gate, and walked down the dark road back to our residence. We found out later from Lupe that there is a code to get into the gates if no one is there to greet you. It would have been beneficial to know this upon arrival, or to be able to read about it in a house book.
All in all, we had a lovely family vacation....
First of all, what you see is what you get with Villa Lumina - the pictures and descriptions are very accurate and representative of what you will find upon arrival (hint:awesome). The property is part of Costa Cumana, an unspoilt stretch of beach roughly 10km south of Puerto Escondido. There are several properties stretching down the coastline, farmland on one side, beach on the other. We were 2 families of 4 (young children), and the house was a perfect fit. Breezy, open air villa, pool, beach.....what more can you ask? Gloria and Lupe are wonderful people - I highly recommend securing Gloaria's cooking services (and we like to cook)! This place is a no brainer if you are looking for some beach time away from the crowds (we saw less than 10 people on the beach, all week). Lastly, Catherine (the owner), was extremely helpful in handling all of our questions/needs. In summary, a home run vacation!
We had a fabulous, fantastic, PERFECT New Years vacation with our family! Your home is beautiful, open, relaxing...the beach, the view, the hammocks, the pool, everything was incredible!!! Carmen was wonderful as well, everyone treated us very nicely. We can't wait to go back!!!
Having stayed at Villa Lumina a couple of times, I thought it was high time I wrote a review. Love this place: beautiful, spacious, comfortable, with its own gorgeous pool. Romantic beach walks in the early morning to a nearby lagoon with wading birds, or sunset strolls followed by cocktails by the pool. The place is ideal to stay at with friends or a family group, as there is plenty of space for everyone to spread out (lots of comfy seating to sprawl on) and do their own thing (read, meditate, soak in the pool, cook up a storm in the well-equipped kitchen with fresh seafood and veg from the market in nearby Puerto Escondido). Great for a special occasion or as just a relaxing retreat. A feel-good place for luxury chill out with your favourite people
Our group of eight adults from two families had a fantastic week at Villa Lumina in early Jan. The house can accommodate many more... up to 14 people with couples using the double beds...but was perfect for our group, with plenty of space for everyone to lounge, read, and enjoy the pool and fantastic views out across the beach. Coming from northern climes we had a hard time believing that the open air living spaces (kitchen, eating and lounging areas) would be truly comfortable, especially at night in January, but we spent the week in T-shirts and shorts and slept under sheets with no need for blankets. A perfect climate. This video shows the interior: http://youtu.be/hE94u4aeGmk. The house is in a small gated community about 30 mins from the airport and Puerto Escondido itself. Because of that distance, we cooked dinners at home rather than venture out at night. Our week sped by, mostly spent lazing around the pool, wading in the surf and swimming in the pool, planning meals, enjoying sunsets and star-watching at night, all to the relaxing soundtrack of the surf. The house has wi-fi that worked reasonably well, along with a nice little library of paperbacks for those who finished the books they brought from home. Lupe, the caretaker, speaks no English but was very helpful, and Lucia, the housekeeper, was accommodating as well. Because we all love to cook, we chose not to pay the supplement to have a cook for the week. Lupe introduced us to Gloria when we requested a cooking lesson and market guide, and she rode with us to the market for a primer on ingredients and then back at the house whipped up lunch and left us with a ready-to-cook dinner. It feels churlish to note anything short of utter praise after such a relaxing week, but in the spirit of helping others have an even better time we note the following. It would be helpful to have a house book with guidance on where to get groceries, find markets and convenience stores, etc. Visitors should plan to rent a car or book a driver, and should be aware that you will need at least some basic Spanish. This is a lovely area that is experiencing rapid growth, with more likely to come in a couple of years once the highway now under construction reduces travel time from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido. In the meantime, tourist services can be pretty basic. But that should not stop you from visiting Villa Lumina. Go now.
We (an anglo- american couple) built our home in Cumaná for a variety of reasons. It is an eco- condominium and all owners have to work towards preserving local flora and fauna. The beach is spectacular and the views stunning. The local cactuses provide a gorgeous contrast to the palm trees and pools, reminding us we are in Mexico :) The mountain range behind frames the view and truly makes it majestic. The homes are all carefully built and in harmony with the environment providing an incredibly attractive high-end but totally relaxed destination.
Cumaná is a beautiful condominium, located outside Puerto Escondido. It is truly paradise. Our home is located right on the beach, one of my favorite times of the day is the early morning - taking a cup of coffee and sitting and watching the birds, fish and sometimes dolphins go by. Sunset walks are a must and it is a gorgeous walk down to the lagoon towards Tomatal. I can never get enough of it!
You can also just hang out in the pool and watch the sea and the beach from there, it is truly, truly relaxing. I like nothing better to collapse in the seating area of the pool with a glass of white wine and a book, perfect!
Puerto Escondido itself is a bustling seaside town that has a lot going for it.
It has a fantastic surf scene and is home to the Mexpipe, consequently there are great opportunities for surf lessons with experienced teachers. My kids have taken them, the youngest was only 5 or 6 years old when she started. It's a wonderful way to get loads of exercise and really enjoy the sea.
There is great fishing for those who like to go out to see and many varieties of local and big fish, such as marlin and tuna can be caught here. There are several companies offering fishing trips and these can be booked on site.
You can waterski in the nearby Manialtepec lagoon and kayak there too, perfect for an afternoon trip!
If you like snorkelling there are many opportunities in Puerto's bays, one of my favourites is Manzanillo which has an amazing array of colourful fish.
Vespas and other mopeds or bikes can be rented and a couple of companies offer eco tours including horseback riding and white water rafting. In high season a company from Mexico City arrives and offers parachute jumping for the braver amongst us. Personally, I prefer going to the beach and looking for shells with the kids, or watching for dolphins!
There is a great music scene in Puerto with live music every single weekend.
I love the restaurant and bar scene in Puerto and I love to leave it and come back to our beautiful home and enjoy the sounds of nature and the sea!
There are so many different restaurants, it's amazing. Traditional Mexican food, amazing pizzas and pastas, pan asian, new Mexican, slow food, you name it, you can find it there.
The bars are too many to mention and go from the upscale to the beach disco 'el tubo' with a myriad in between. Cocktails are delicious with fresh fruit and the beers always cold. A popular option is a fresh coconut with rum added, fantastic!
If you like cooking and want to take advantage of our great bbq area, you could check out the market. Well-stocked with super fresh local fish, meats, fruit and vegetables, all delicious and inexpensive. The spices are varied and their aroma wonderful.
You could also wander down to the Marina, a slightly elegant term for the area where the fishing boats unload their wares, and buy freshly caught fish, straight from the fisherman!
All in all Cumaná and Puerto Escondido really are the perfect holiday destination. There is something for every age and kids, teens and adults love the Pacific beach vibe and all the amenities available.
