About Robert and Lucy Smith

Robert and I recently moved from the UK to make the Loire Valley our permanent home. We now own and run Loire Luxury Holiday Cottages and have recently completed the restoration of our second holiday house.

Our next project is already underway and will open in 2016.

We maintain and look after the cottages ourselves -that way we can give you our personal assurance that they are furnished and kept to the very highest standards. We live only 30 minutes away and are on hand if you need anything extra during your stay.

Robert and Lucy Smith purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Robert and Lucy Smith chose Fontevraud-l'Abbaye

We fell in love with Fontevraud during a holiday in 2007 and decided there and then it was the place for us! The Loire Valley has beautiful countryside, a rich river life, amazing chateaux and of course fantastic food and wines. There really is something for everyone.

What makes this cottage unique

Abbaye Cottage is situated in the heart of the village, it is perfect for getting to the bakery for breakfast croissants or wandering to one of the great eateries for dinner in the evenings, or just sitting in the tranquil garden with a glass of wine! We really hope that you enjoy your holiday at Abbaye Cottage as much as we have done over the years.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful holiday at Abbeye Cottage which is equipped to a very high standard, and we felt very at home. Lucy was very helpful in the run up to our holiday, providing lots of local information and even arranged an appointment at the local vet for our dogs to have their passports sorted for our return to England. Lucy left us a lovely welcome pack which included home made scones, bread, jam etc, together with a bottle of fizz chilling in the fridge! She even left biscuits for the dogs and had a bowl of water waiting for them. The cottage and garden are beautiful and we enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub at night. The village is very quaint and there's a good selection of places to eat and drink, and is also ideally located for visiting the surrounding area. We will definitely return, but next time it will be for longer than a week!

Beautiful cottage in the Loire

  • 5 of 5

We had a week at this gorgeous cottage and wish it had been longer. Everything was perfect, and we really loved the walled garden, so peaceful yet right in the centre of the village. Brilliant location too, so near Saumur, Chinon and lovely walks along the Loire. Lucy was very welcoming and helpful with lots of recommendations for places to visit and restaurants. Thank you so much, we hope to return.

Luxury In The Loire

  • 5 of 5

What a gem! Abbaye Cottage in the Loire Valley village of Fontevraud L'Abbaye absolutely deserves its 'luxury' tag. We stayed for a week and should have booked to stay longer.

First, the village: Nestled among fields of sunflowers, Fontevraud is a film-set-perfect collection of higgledy-piggledy white stone houses fanning from a central, cobbled square dotted with restaurants, boulangerie, biscuiterie etc. It's everything you'd imagine a sun-baked French village to be, where the pastime of choice is sitting at a cafe table, sipping a coffee or cooling down by running the condensation from a cool glass of utterly superb Loire wine along your arm. That and, of course, strolling across the square to the abbey that is one of the world's great treasures...and the awe-inspiring burial place of Richard the Lionheart and Henry ll, along with more assorted royalty than you'd expect to find anywhere outside Westminster Abbey.

Better still, Fontevraud is superbly placed for the prime sights of the Loire valley. The city of Samur is less than 20 minutes away, while there are more fairytale chateaux nearby than you can shake a stick at. Especially the ultimate fairytale castle, Chateau d'Usse, where Charles Perrault was inspired to write Sleeping Beauty.

Now the cottage: Set behind walls, literally just seconds from the glorious Abbey is Abbaye Cottage. Built in the same creamy-white tuffeau stone it is an oasis of cool and chic. The owners have thought of everything...bubbly, cakes and fresh bread on the kitchen table to greet you, Egyptian cotton sheets on the beds and even wonderfully scented soap in the two ensuite bathrooms. There were just the two of us, but there's plenty of space for four...including in the hot tub in an unoverlooked garden where you hear only the faint hum of bees in the lavender.

For quiet nights in, there are UK channels on the TV, but we spent most evenings exploring the lovely restaurants in and around the village.

Downsides? We couldn't find any. Maybe the village square could have done with a little music in the night but, on the other hand, that might destroy the perfect peace of the place. We've never come home from a holiday so relaxed, or so determined to go back.

An Amazing Week At The Abbey Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We chose to spend a week in the Loire Valley to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and after much research, we chose the Abbey Cottage in the village of Fontevraud. We had read the stellar reviews posted on TripAdvisor, so our expectations were pretty high. From the moment we booked, the owner, Lucy, was very responsive and helpful, which gave us a sense that we had decided on the right place. She gave us loads of information before we arrived, which really helped us to maximize our time in the area. Upon arriving, we found the accommodations to be even better than expected. The cottage itself is so attractive and very well located. It's secluded garden was the setting for many a relaxed lunch and several spirited card games during our week. Lucy has left no detail unattended, and has furnished the interior to a very high standard, with crisp white luxury linens, fluffy towels, and beautiful yet relaxed interior decor. We were a party of two couples, and found the two ensuites to be very comfortable. The bedroom ceilings are very high, and the stone walls were a beautiful feature. The mattresses were very comfortable, something that is quite rare in most rentals. The kitchen was extremely well furnished, and we appreciated having a washing machine and larger than normal refrigerator. The garden is planted beautifully, with the lavender just about to bloom, and the roses already in process. The jucuzzi was used daily, and was a great and luxurious way to wake up. The property was spotless, and really looked like it had popped out of a magazine spread. Attention to every detail made this a week to remember. We enjoyed the village amenities, and while quite small, there are a number of opportunities for dining, both casual and more upscale. We especially enjoyed our last meal at the Michellin starred restaurant within the Fontevraud Abbey grounds ( also a hotel). It was a tremendous value for the quality of the meal and service, and we highly recommend it. We highly recommend this rental property, and found it a lovely base from which to explore "The Garden of France".

Charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for us with a wonderful cosy ambiance and the village itself is beautiful (and even more tranquil after the day trippers have left). There are lovely restaurants just around the corner, although the kitchen is so well equipped and atmospheric that it's really not necessary to eat out every night. We were blessed with beautiful sunshine every day so relaxing in the garden and the jacuzzi was a delight after a hard day of chateau viewing!
