About Andy Duck

Andy & Judith bought Villa Bellevue in 2003, before many English had discovered the delights of the Limousin. It was bought intentionally as a holiday home, and has served them well over the years, and in all seasons.

Living in Northants, they are able to get to the house in one day, travelling via the Channel Tunnel with their dog and children.

They love outdoor activities and have explored the locale extensively in the 12 years since they bought the house.

The property was already in good condition when purchased, and just needed the "French decor" attending to. It is now mostly decorated in white throughout, although still retains a wealth of character.

Andy Duck purchased this villa in 2003

Why Andy Duck chose Limoges

We both love the outdoors, and travelled through the Limousin whilst on holiday in 2002. We fell in love with the countryside, mountains and lakes, and the peacefulness of the area.

There is also lots to do in the area around Peyrat Le Chateau, and we are always able to keep ourselves (and our 2 children!) amused.

What makes this villa unique

Some things we love:-

Walking across the mountain tops and looking down on Lac Vassiviere.

Appreciating the blackness of the night sky and stars when there is so little light pollution.

Taking a water taxi across the lake to the Ile De Vassiviere for ice cream.

Wandering through the ancient back streets of St Leonard.

Appreciating the avant-garde of the art exhibitions in the gallery on Ile De Vassiviere, or at L'Espace Paul Rebeyrolle.

Spending the day on one of the beautiful beaches on Lac Vassiviere.

Cycling the new trail that has been installed around the entire lake!

Going to the Boulangerie for freshly baked croissants, first thing in the morning.

Watching a bicycle race go through the town with the locals.

Drinking coffee and chatting in the Bar Tabac.

We hired kayaks/canoes at the lake one day and a pedallo another day, also did a little cycling at the lake and also nearby at the village. The village is charming and we were amazed at the number of shops and facilities for such a small place. The boys pronounced in their best holiday ever - Wolley family of Harwell Oxon

10/8/13 – 24/8/13 We all had a fantastic holiday in your home from home - a lovely change from ‘holiday lets’! What a lovely area. Thank you – Lewis family

10/9/13 – 17/9/13 – Seven days definitely does not feel like enough to discover everything this beautiful area has to offer. We really enjoyed the Cite des Insectes just outside Nedde – we loved it, as did our two year old, so thank you Judith for mentioning it in this book. Thank you for letting us stay in your lovely home - Ben, Nicola, Polly from Bristol

Beautiful House With Pool And Easy Access To Wonderful Facilities Of Vassiviere
average rating of 4.0 based on 3 reviews

Great house in a great location

  • 4 of 5

This was a very well-equipped and comfortable house and we had a great week. Really liked the pool and the large garden. Wifi and UK TV were a bonus for teenagers. We also enjoyed using the bikes and playing boules during the warm evenings. There are lots of great places to swim and explore in the area and we found it very attractive and very quiet. Have already recommended the house to lots of friends and family.

There is a local beach on the lake in the village, which is 10 minutes walk away. The nearest beach on Lac Vassiviere at Auphelle is only 4 miles away.

There is a now a long footpath that completely encircles Lac Vassiviere, and joins all the beaches together. The main beaches have lifeguards, and a shop / snack bar. There are also many secluded beaches on Lac Vassiviere and on other lakes in the area. There is also a restaurant at Auphelle, and the bateaux mouche leave from here.

Peyrat is 440 miles from Calais (we do the journey from Northampton via Channel Tunnel in one day, it takes 11-12 hours). It is only 320 miles from Caen, if you take the longer ferry crossing. The local airport is Bellegarde in Limoges, well served by Ryanair and FlyBe from many of the UK's airports.

Limoges also has a large train station easily accessible from Paris, and then a local train to Eymoutiers, but you do really need a car to appreciate and explore the region.

Village Centre - 5 minutes walk.

Lac Vassiviere - 4 miles.

Eymoutiers - 6 miles.

Bourganeuf - 12 miles.

St Leonard De Noblat - 17 miles.

Limoges Centre - 30 miles.

Further Details:

Musee De La Resistance, in the castle in Peyrat, which was a hub of French Resistance in the war. Cascades Des Jarreaux, waterfall near Peyrat, excellent spot for a picnic.

Local Walks - Complete set of the guides in the house, choose from high or low, long or short routes.

Ile De Vassiviere – There are sculptures all over the island, a castle with restaurant, and an interesting modern art gallery. Walk to the island, or take the “train”.

“Parc En Arbres” –Aerial adventure playground / assault course in the trees (like Go Ape).

St Leonard De Noblat - lovely small town, very old houses, good shopping & good place to watch the steam train. Also has a railway museum.

Bourganeuf – local town, quite a few shops and nice restaurants. Interesting architecture.

Eymoutiers – local town for shopping , petrol, etc., also has very pretty town centre with a river, and very old parts, a good “explore”.

Espace Paul Reyberolle – Art Gallery in Eymoutiers.

Steam Train – from Eymoutiers to Limoges, or across “Plateau de Millevaches” to Ussel or Clermont Ferrand.

The small towns around the lake are delightful, like Faux La Montagne, Royere and Beaumont Sur Lac. There is a horse riding center near the lake.

Limoges – Good shopping, Cathedral & gardens, great covered market, very old city centre with many restored buildings, and of course china (also good “seconds” shops).

Oradour sur Glane - a village memorial to a second world war atrocity. Only about an hour away.

Masgot - Strange sculptured village - they do a lot of art, sculpture related stuff in the summer including workshops for kids.

Maze and Les Loups de Chabrieres (wolf conservation area) near Gueret – good fun for kids.

Bort Des Orgues - Fascinating valley and town, about 100km away, but well worth a trip. Limestone pillars and high cliffs, stunning views to Puy De Dome.

Mont Dore - Local ski resort about 130km away, but an easy day out if you are there is in the snowy season.

Notes on accommodation: The property has electric central heating throughout and is dry lined, so keeps very warm in the winter. There is also a large log fire, with a well stocked wood pile! The house is fairly typical French construction of the 1930s, although it was restored about 20 years ago. The "ground floor" is effectively the basement, with access to the front door on the first floor via a set of stone steps and lovely veranda. The front door opens into the large lounge / dining area, and the kitchen is off the rear of the dining area. There is a WC on this floor too, and a large cupboard for coats, as well as containing spare blankets etc. All the bedrooms are on the top floor, with one bath/shower room and one shower room, each with basin and WC. A cot is available by prior arrangement, as well as a high chair. There is a stair gate available for the top of the stairs if required. Outside: Very large garden, securely fenced with locking gates to front. A large gravel drive provides ample off road parking. There is a barbeque area under the plane trees outside the kitchen, and outside seating. There is also patio furniture for the veranda, a nice place to watch the sun go down with a glass in hand! The swimming pool is heated, 8m x 4m, with large patio area with deck chairs and sun loungers. It is accessed by a gravel path from the house. The pool is protected by a security cover which must be put back fully in place when not in use to comply with French law. There are two swing frames with slides, a trampoline with safety net and also a tree house for children. All children's play equipment is used at your own risk and subject to your supervision. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier, spin drier, hand washing sinks. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen included. Beach / pool towels not provided. Other: Collection of books, magazines and CDs in living room, as well as many board games for the odd rainy day!
