Overview

About the property

Cottage in Llanllechid, Nr. Bangor, Snowdonia National Park, Gwynedd, Wales - 5 Minutes Walk To The Village Shop And Pub

This is wild unspoiled Wales and with the exception of the local bakery, little has changed since ancient times. A steep mountain stream runs under a small bridge on the lane that connects the cottage to the road network. A small convenience store is a short stroll away and a traditional pub 'The Royal Oak' 5 minutes on foot. There is one small farm, a church and just 4 more cottages in close proximity with the remainder towering mountains, open fields and marshland for miles around.

Green Cottage is perfect for couples, a family of 4 or 2 couples sharing the property. There are 2 bedrooms and the usual configuration of the beds is a double in one and twins in the other. A cot and a high chair is standard equipment as is all bedding and towels for up to 4 guests. The bedrooms are separated by a short landing and the bathroom, equipped with electric shower and double ended bath, is positioned off the same landing. Downstairs is the impressive inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove that’s in the centre of the very cozy living room. Off the living room is the essential porch for storage of muddy boots and coats. The fully equipped kitchen is a very light and generous space that easily accommodates up to 4 adults seated at an elephant's foot solid oak dining table. Rear garden area is fully enclosed and very private. Perfect for bbq's, eating out or just catching the sun as it's all south facing.

High speed wifi is an essential part of the cottage equipment and full central heating is provided at no extra charge.

The following are additional elements of the cottage location that make it a fabulous base for a holiday in this area:

* This area has by far the highest concentration of outdoor activities available to the visitor than any other part of the UK

* The famous Zip World experience is just 3 miles away

* Cottage is located at the lower end of the Ogwen Valley so a short drive gets you right into the famous mountaineering sections of Tryfan and the Glyders

* White water kayaking at the River Ogwen is only 2 miles away

* Access to the Carneddau mountain range right from the cottage doorstep

* Short drives to no less than 3 medieval castles at Conwy, Beaumaris and Caernarfon and one National Trust stately home Penrhyn Castle (5 minutes by car)

About Andy Want

In the 20 yrs since purchasing our first overseas rental property we've worked hard to perfect every aspect of the villa rental experience and in 2017 we expanded our range of villas to 1 three bedroom villa, 1 two bedroom villa and 1 one bedroom villa in some of the most desirable locations. At regular intervals we inspect and ensure that standards of maintenance are kept at their very best. In 2012 we further expanded our range of private rental units to include a refurbished Welsh cottage in an area that has the highest concentration of outdoor activities and attractions in the whole of the UK - Snowdonia. Our association with that area spans 20 yrs.

Andy Want purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Andy Want chose Bangor

We purchased this 2 bedroom cottage in 1994 and after several months of refurbishment in 2012 it allowed us to further expand our range of private rental units to include this delightful Welsh cottage. The locality is quieter and less developed than the Lake District but many would argue it rivals if not exceeds the Lakes for it's scenery. Additionally the area (Snowdonia) has by far the highest concentration of outdoor activities and attractions in the whole of the UK.

lovely location quiet and walks from the door - near Anglesey Great Orme and Mountains

  • 4 of 5

easy to get to and good directions, just one windy rainy day so for Nov very lucky. Lots of lovely walking and cosy wood burner for evenings - double bedroom very small and have to climb over each other to get in and out. Twin room is massive. Only negative for us was no hoover (as I would hoover most days and it is much quicker than brushing!) I was spinning (wool) so a bit messy too. Nice hard floors downstairs for dog and enclosed garden which was great too. Take your own cleaning stuff as non provided and I didn't read the info. properly and had to go and get some. All in all a great stay. Take your own logs too for the fire or buy locally.

Lovely cottage in a wonderful area of North Wales

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week's stay in this cottage. The location is excellent, and as described. Very easy access from the main roads through North Wales and yet you have the feeling that you're miles away from anywhere.

The cottage itself was very clean and comfortable. Lovely spacious kitchen and cosy living room.

Of the two bedrooms, one is much larger than the other, yet this one is set up as a twin room, with the much smaller bedroom as the double. You can only access this double bed from one side and there isn't much room for anything else in this room! If you are a couple on your own I'd make sure you request the large bedroom is set up as a double, which apparently the owner will do. We didn't realise this, but managed to push the beds together ourselves.

We did have an issue with the heating as the owner sets it for specific times morning and evening. When we arrived mid afternoon in the middle of storm Bryan, we were wet and cold and the cottage felt cold. You can't adjust the heating yourself so we had no way of warming up unless we set the wood burner going, which wasn't something we were ready to do as we were unpacking. Although to be fair, the owner had very kindly left supplies for us to use in the wood burner.

I contacted the owner straight away and he came the next day and changed the heating settings so the heating came on a bit earlier in the afternoon, which we appreciated. I take his point that if he leaves it on permanently it would be a waste of heating and money, but every other holiday cottage I've stayed in I have been able to set the heating to come on and off at times which suited us, and for me, not being able to do this, was a problem. However, the wood burner is very effective and once it is going it does seem to warm the cottage up nicely.

Others have mentioned parking and I have to say this wasn't a problem at all. You can pull up outside the cottage to load and unload and then leave your car at the bottom of the lane, where there was always plenty of space.

For location, this cottage would be hard to beat. So many places to visit and walk within easy driving distance. The whole of Anglesey is easily accessible, as is Snowdon, Conwy, Betws-y-Coed, Llanberis and numerous lakes, forests, beaches. It's a paradise for walkers.

A huge Tesco is about 10/15 mins away (and they will deliver!).

All in all, a comfortable cottage, friendly, helpful owner, and in a great location.

Owner's Response: Thank you do much for a lovely review and again I apologise that Storm Brian caught me out on your arrival day. It had been unusually mild the week before so I appreciate the heating settings were not good enough once the storm set in. Having said that I almost always get them right as many previous guests have noted.

lovely clean cottage

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was lovely, kitchen / diner very good even though could do with a proper oven with 4 rings and double oven. lacking in bowls and saucepan lids. If eating out or having ready meals ok, just lacking if cooking normally.

Heating very good and plenty of hot water, bathroom needs update, good walk in power shower would be nice. Difficult to get in and out of present one because of the slope on the bath.

Beds clean and comfy, with good linen and plenty of storage and hanging space in the back bedroom.

Outside space very secure and dog friendly. ( in the summer lovely area to make use of the BBQ and sit out)

Not as expected

  • 2 of 5

Overall it is a nice area. Sorry to say the property needs a bit more attention to detail. Unwelcoming and unsightly hasps and locks around the property. Can not control the heating without contacting the owner. Excessive creaking floors and beds and poor lighting. Not expecting to see a large fence and shed, which is not on Mr Want's website which showed a large lawn. Although it is low price for August/September, I would prefer to pay more for better standards.

Sorry to be negative, I can only say it as I see it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to post a review and I'm only sorry none of the issues mentioned were highlighted to me at any time during this August 2017 fortnight. That's disappointing as the cottage heating could very easily have been adjusted from day one by guests following the cottage information sheets provided to every visitor. The lawn area is as described and a new wooden fence erected to make the cottage fully toddler and pet friendly. Previous to it's refurbishment 5 yrs ago, we lived in the cottage for 20 years and never found floorboards upstairs unacceptably noisy but guess that is down to personal experiences. We have some more detailed upgrades due in November 2017 and rental rates will accordingly be higher for the 2018 season. Many thanks.

Great stay in lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

Easy to book and communicate. Comfortable for two/three but four would be a bit of a squash in the sitting room. Lovely kitchen and small garden completely dog proof as stated. Great place for visiting all parts of N Wales and Anglesey. Good local dog walks with lots of paths. Landlord attentive when required but not intrusive; v friendly. Would definitely recommend.
