Les Papillons: Charming Breton Farmhouse With Lake

Overview

About the property

3 bedroom granite farmhouse in tranquil heart of Brittany Countryside. Sleeps 6

Charming stone-built, Breton farmhouse situated in heart of beautiful, tranquil Brittany countryside. Vine covered thick granite walls make it cool in summer, cosy in winter with its cast iron log-burning stove. The farmhouse has a large gravelled drive, ideal for long summer evenings of Boules and barbecues. The property stands in its own estate of 9 acres with lawns and swathes of bee and butterfly-friendly flowers immediately surrounding it . Over the private lane is a meadow, which in turn leads to a woodland glade and trail down to our own private lake with rowing boat. Our children have all loved learning to ride a bike here on the safe driveway and smooth tarmac lane.

The house itself is beautifully decorated and furnished and has a bright,well-equipped kitchen/dining room and a generous but cosy living room with wood burning stove. There is also a downstairs loo.

The main double bedroom (upstairs) has a half tester canopied bed and is simply but stylishly decorated and furnished with plenty of space for a travel cot (supplied on request.)

Two further upstairs bedrooms each have two single beds. There is an upstairs bathroom with combination bath/shower.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We had such a lovely holiday, the weather was great, especially the first week. Your recommendations for places to go was a huge help, the girls especially enjoyed the beach at Le Pouldu which we went back to three times! We also had a lovely meal on our last night at the pizza restaurant in Priziac.

Your house was great, very well equipped and so relaxing! ...

...Thanks again for letting us use your lovely house.

The girls have said it was their best holiday ever and want to go back next year!

A lovely cottage in beautiful gardens

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 have reluctantly returned from a lovely break in Brittany. The cottage is comfortable and idyllically situated in a beautiful, bucolic corner well away from the crowds elsewhere. There are many local attractions but it is hard to tear oneself away from the gardens which are full of dazzling wild flowers and constantly alive with butterflies and the buzzing of bees. We hope to return!

Coast/Beach:

The nearest coast is at Le Pouldu, about 40-45 minutes drive away. Its quiet sandy beaches, seaside cafes and restaurants are well loved by the locals but largely overlooked by tourists. The hugely popular resorts of Carnac and Le Trinite are just a bit further and have a more traditional seaside appeal including an Ice Cream Parlour with reputedly the greatest number of flavours including Candy Floss and even Curry: a 'must' for the children!

Travel:

Brittany Ferries operate between Portsmouth and St Malo, an easy 2 hour / 100 mile drive from Priziac and, at time of writing, flights go between Southampton and Brest, about 1.5 hours away. Caen is the next nearest port, about 4 hours drive away. Car essential.

Distances:

The local village, Priziac is a 3 minute drive away. The nearest town, Le Faouet (pronounced ' Le Fow-ett') is 10 minutes by car.

Rostrenon is a 20 minute drive and the major shopping centre (hypermarkets etc) at Lorient is half an hour away.

The nearest coast is 40 minutes and major resorts of Carnac, Le Trinite and Quiberon are all between 60 - 90 minutes.

Numerous picturesque towns and shopping destinations such as Pont Aven, Pontivy, Guemene and Vannes are all within 30 - 60mins away.

Further Details:

Priziac has three bars, a bakery and general provisions store (open Sunday morning) and 2 restaurants, one of which, 'Le Capris' is an excellent, family friendly pizzeria and grill.

Le Faouet is an attractive small town with a medieval central 'Halle' which is venue to numerous events from costume parades to antiques fairs. There is a good supermarket and a full range of shops including a post office with bureau de change and there are several bank ATM's.

There are several bars including one with free wi-fi access, and a range of restaurants including several excellent Creperies, so strongly associated with Brittany and serving amongst many other things, the local sausage delicacy, 'andouilette' which is a challenge to most British palates (you have been warned!)

The local countryside is wonderfully tranquil and offers a multitude of activities from walking, pony trekking, sailing and fishing and there are many other attractions including animal parks, museums, beauty spots and sites of historical interest.

For younger children, the nearby deer park is immensely popular as is, rather bizarrely, the local ant and bee museum!

During the summer, all the local villages and towns have their 'fetes' where you can get a real taste of rural french community life and hospitality. One of the biggest local events is the annual tractor fair in St Caradec, which attracts hundreds of exhibitors and visitors and gives real flavour of Brittany in times past. This is a lovely corner of France where the pace of life is slow and gentle and where visitors are treated with great hospitality and friendliness. A great place to wind down...
