Dating from the 17th century the Dairy is full of character with magnificent beams and fireplace with a wood burning stove. It occupies the end section of the Longère and has its own outside space with garden furniture and barbecue.
Ground floor - Comfortable lounge with settees, English satellite television, DVD player, radio and CD player. Internet access - Wi Fi. Modern kitchen/ diner with table and chairs, dishwasher, gas cooker with oven, fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee machine etc.
Ground floor bathroom (bath with integral shower) and washbasin. Separate toilet.
2 bedrooms on the first floor (one double + one twin bed room) each has electric radiators, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bedside tables.
All Bed linen included in the rental.

A rural setting in central Brittany and just kms from Neulliac, between the towns of Pontivy(10kms) and Mur de Bretagne(6kms). St Samson has 10 acre grounds and direct pedestrian access to the Nantes Brest canal . It offers open views, peace and tranquillity and is the perfect family holiday destination for walkers, fishermen and cyclists. Being in central Brittany guests are able to discover both the Northern and Southern coasts, many major towns, and it is within an hour and a half drive of the ferry ports of St Malo and Roscoff and airports at Rennes and Dinard. The heated swimming pool (11.2 x 4.2m) is open from the end of May until mid September. It is fenced and conforms to all the rigorous French safety standards. It uses a non-chlorine system and is surrounded by a paved terrace area with sun loungers. All gites are fully equipped to a high standard and are a real home from home. Unlimited free Internet access. Pet friendly. Games room (table tennis + pool). Children's swings and trampoline.
We have always been Francophiles, spending every holiday in France with our children when they were young, visiting and exploring different areas of France. We always dreamed of buying a property here and in 1992 the time was right, following my mother's passing away and our inheriting some money. We bought our property in October 1992 but did not come to live here permanently until April 2000 when we retired - my husband sold his business and I retired from teaching. 14 years on and we are still in love with France and are well integrated into our village with many French friends. We bought a ruined property (Cottage, Longère + outbuildings) and have thoroughly enjoyed renovating it. Our aim was to preserve its character but to give it all modern comforts which we think we have achieved.

Having visited many areas of France we always returned to UK via Brittany and over the years spent more time here and fell in love with the area. Brittany has so much to offer, both for those who live here and for holiday makers too. The landscape is varied, mostly unspoiled and roads are quiet. The Bretons are proud of their Celtic roots, they retain their heritage and welcome all visitors to the area.
Whilst we live in the heart of the countryside it is an easy drive to 2 major towns which means we can enjoy the best of both worlds - Rural + Town.
We are also within easy reach of the major ferry ports and airports ( under a 2 hour drive ) which makes it easy for us to return to UK to visit our family and easy too for our guests.
St Samson is ideally located, being in central Brittany, so enabling our guests to visit all corners of Brittany easily. We did a lot of homework before we bought our property so we feel we have bought wisely and avoided many of the pitfalls. We are located between 2 towns and are in the countryside but within a kilometre of a main road. Our biggest asset is the Nantes Brest canal which is just 100 yards over our own field and which offers 365kms of canal towpath for walkers, fishermen and cyclists. After 5 years of successful renting we decided to put in a swimming pool (heated) which has proved a huge success. It is fully fenced and adheres to all the very strict French regulations - as well as being a real sun trap. We receive many return visits so must be doing something right.
At the time of booking a 20% deposit is required (to be paid into our bank account in UK). This is non returnable so we strongly advise you to take out a Travel insurance in case of cancellation. The remainder of the rental should be paid at least eight weeks before your holiday.
When you arrive you will be asked to pay a £100 (cheques accepted) security deposit which will be returned to you at the end of your stay minus any charges for damages.
Saturday is changeover day for the Cottage and the Dairy.
Earliest arrival time on Saturday is 4pm and we ask you to vacate the property before 10am on the departure day. Late arrivals accepted by prior arrangement.
Notes on prices:
Rentals are per week from mid May until November.
Electricity , gas and water are included in the rental, also all bedlinen.
Wood for the woodburning stove is charged at 50€ per cubic metre
Towel rental available at 6 € per person ( beach towels not available )
Final clean 40 - 45€ - strongly recommended if you have an early morning ferry.
This is a wonderful place to stay in an gorgeous part of Brittany. Having immediate access to the canal path for cycling was brilliant, as were the high quality mountain bike trails this linked to. The accommodation and pool were lovely, the owners very helpful yet discreet - the perfect combination. The close proximity of Lake Guerledan with its warm water, beaches and kayaking opportunities is an added attraction. The local town was a 5 minute drive away and had everything you need so we used our car very little. We particularly enjoyed picking fresh herbs from the owners garden and eating their surplus courgettes!
Special interest holidays:
St Samson is of special interest to walkers, fishermen, cyclists and nature lovers as we have direct access to the Nantes Brest canal and its 365kms of towpath. With its rural location and non light polluted skies it will also be of interest to astronomers.
St Samson is equi distant from both the northern and southern coasts of Brittany (an hours drive). The southern coast boasts many large sandy beaches where as the northern coast is more rugged.
Nearer to home is the Lac de Guerledan (10 minute drive) - a man made lake with sandy beaches and opportunities for water sports including canoeing, water skiing and windsurfing.
St Samson is within an hour and a half drive of the ferry ports of Roscoff and St Malo (served by Brittany Ferries) Cherbourg and Caen are a four hour drive and the Tunnel about an eight hour drive.
The nearest airports are at Rennes, Brest and Dinard which is under a 2 hour drive. You may consider flying in and then hiring a car at the airport.
Whilst St Samson has a rural location it is within a five minute drive of the village of Neulliac with its Bakery, Pizzeria / Restaurant, Crêperie, Chemist and Bar. Mur de Bretagne has a supermarket (Intermarché) and is just a 10 minute drive. The thriving town of Pontivy is just 10kms away with its medieval chateau, indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, several hypermarkets, many shops, banks, cafes and restaurants.
There is so much to see and do in Brittany. You may choose to relax and chill out on site or to visit the many medieval villages and towns like Vannes, Josselin, Rennes, St Brieuc and Quimper to name just a few. French food and wine is world renowned and there are numerous restaurants to try ( including one in Neulliac itself ) at a very affordable price. A 3 course meal can cost as little as 12€ including wine!
Each gîte has its own Information folder of what to see and do in the area + numerous tourist leaflets. There is also a Gîte book where guests can record ther adventures and pass them on.
