5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, mountains and sea, close to Spain, perfect for families and groups of friends
This detached villa with beautiful pool is our home in the south of France. Book it as your base, and come and explore this area around Maureillas and Ceret in the Languedoc-Roussillon, one of the lesser known regions of France. There is so much to see and do, or just relax with a glass of wine round the pool, at the beach...
The villa is centred on 1/2 an acre of gardens with a large swimming pool big enough to play in, and with a proper deep end (1.8m). Parking is available for several cars on the drive.
The layout is mostly open plan with the kitchen giving onto two separate dining areas, and two lounge areas. Most rooms, including three of the bedrooms, have double doors onto an outside terrace giving a light and airy feel to the place. There is also the outside 'room', with table and parasol seating 10, and Dancook coal barbecue for entertaining alfresco on those long summer days. The property is equally attractive in winter with TV/selection of DVDs, log burning fire, books, board games and jigsaws.
There are 2 double bedrooms and 3 twins, which makes the house ideal for 2 families wishing to holiday together or a group of couples or friends enjoying a house party together. The master double has a spacious en suite shower room featuring a large 'wet room' shower, wash hand basin and toilet. The second double and one of the twins share the family bathroom, featuring bath, separate shower, his 'n hers basins, bidet and wc. Up a timber spiral staircase you will find 2 twin bedrooms sharing a shower room with shower, basin and wc.
Access to the property is via an attractive external staircase to reach the upper terrace and front door. It is therefore not appropriate for anyone requiring disabled access. The property nestles in the foothills of the Pyrenees and is built into the side of the hill, so what is ground floor level at the rear of the property is first floor at the front. This can be seen upon careful examination of the photographs.

About Michael Cutteridge
I bought Villa Les Aygals in 2002 when my children were still young and it has been, and continues to be a much loved family home. We all live in London and have busy lives, which makes it difficult to get there as often as we would like, so we decided to share it with you. I originally thought about buying a second home in the UK and checked out Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. It quickly became apparent that I could never be a week-ender due to the horrendous traffic and started to set my sights further afield. We can leave London, drive to Stansted, and arrive at the house in France in the same time it would have taken to drive to Cornwall on a good run!! I have never regretted my decision to buy in France. My children and I enjoy a wonderful property with a swimming pool, sunny days all year round, a different culture, the stunning mountains and proximity to the sea. And now it's available to share with you! I hope you choose to stay and come to love the area as we do.
Michael Cutteridge purchased this Villa in 2002
Why Michael Cutteridge chose Maureillas-las-Illas
I chose to buy in a village with proximity to local amenities as I didn't see myself as the sort of person (with teenagers) who would want to be stuck half way up a mountainside with an hour's drive to the nearest pint of milk! We love being a part of this French community and employ a local french gardener and 3 ex-pat English people to help us look after the property. During your stay you may get to meet Debra our housekeeper, Bernie the pool man, Don our handyman or Franck the gardener. Our time in France generally starts with dinner in either El Tap or 66/20, both closeby in the village, to say hello to Jean-Louis or Sabrina who are your hosts, and to meet our feeding requirements before we get to the shops. We are discovering the area all the time. New places open up and there are always our favourite haunts to go back to.
What makes this Villa unique
Villa Les Ayglas straddles 3 cultures. It is in France, but has a strong Catalan influence, you are in Catalonia after all! It is just 15 minutes drive over the border into Spain with its Costa Brava and the wonderful cities of Girona, Figueres and Barcelona. This area is an art lovers paradise. All the greats painted here Matisse, Picasso to name just two, and their presence can be felt as you explore the local area....such as the modern art museum in Ceret and in the bars of Collioure; over the border it is Salvador Dali at his museum in Figueres. You are also in a most scenic environment with the beautiful Pyrenees, wonderful beaches and the picture postcard Ceret with its famous Saturday market. And lets not forget our lovely village of Maureillas which puts on entertainment most week-ends through out the summer months at its Parc de Loisir...... come and see the locals dancing their local dance The Sardanes, or enjoy the Paella and Mechoi evenings with music.......there is so much to do and so little time to do it!!!

Property was amazing I would recommend it to anyone. It is huge
Owners are extremely helpful. If you have any issues they are sorted immediately with the friendly staff that help out there. We are going back next year because we had such a fantastic time. There is something for everyone with the outstanding views and walks, to aqua parks and local lake which has so many activities offered for the family.
Really glad you had a great time.Best M.
A fantastic villa and location
The villa was very impressive, even better than the pictures on the website.
Very spacious, even for a large group.
The swimming pool was substantial and shallow at one end for children, deep enough to take a lovely swim at the other end. Different areas of the villa to relax in- terrace, balcony at the front, pool area.
Very well equipped with plenty of dining areas, large kitchen, barbecue area.
Thoughtful extras such as large towels, table tennis, badminton, bikes
The local village was very friendly and easily accessible
Really glad you had a lovely time at our villa home in France.
Lovely villa with lots of great activities locally
Ive stayed at the villa during the last 2 summers. Two years ago I went out there to train for an ironman triathlon. There were fantastic mountains for cycling with unbelievable views, Great Lakes and quiet beaches for swimming. There was also a local triathlon club that were really friendly and let me train a couple of sessions with them when I was out there. I had such a great experience that I returned the following summer for a holiday to chill by the pool and check out some of the beaches and bars.
We were delighted you were able to train and enjoy a holiday at the same time!
Great Villa with lots of fun of activities nearby

Lovely villa in beautiful part of France
This villa is very spacious and situated in a beautiful area. Property was clean and towels provided, we also opted to rent the pool towels. Pool was huge and lovely and warm, the pool area is a real suntrap. Views from the terrace are lovely. Table tennis was a huge hit with the teenagers and the grandparents! Easy walk down to the local village for bread from one of the two boulangeries or any forgotten items from the local shop. Le Clerc at Le Boulou and Lidl at Ceret are both great for shopping and open Sunday mornings. We ate at El Tap one night and had a great meal, booking may be advised as was very busy on the night we visited. Bike trails in the area are great.
A must is a visit to the lovely town of Ceret, we ate at the Hotel Vidal on a Tues night which is also market night and the atmosphere in the town was wonderful, great jazz band playing. Members of our party visited Carcassonne and thoroughly enjoyed it, might be best to visit late afternoon/early evening though as very hot. The roads in the coastal areas are extremely busy due to the high number of camp sites nearby, by trial and error we discovered a quiet area of the beach north of Argeles opp the La Marende camping site with huge parking area and with use of the satnav found an easy route via the 'Taxo de la Mer' road to the beach. Didn't reach Coullioure as road was too busy! Did however have several trips to Spain and found a lovely beach nr Llanca (Grifeu) and then took the coast road back into France. Also trip to Barcelona which was very easy, parked near La Sagrera metro station for free then caught the metro into centre, Nou Camp stadium was a big hit with my son! A9 and D900 can be very busy though around the border area, you can cut out some of the queues by using the D71B which comes into Le Perthus by the car park. Trips into the mountain towns were a lot quieter. If you want a trip on the 'Little Yellow Train' you will need to book at the SNCF station in Ceret.
Villa was in a great location and easily accommodated the eight members of our party, plenty of different areas to sit and chill. A small table and chairs on the front balcony would be welcome to enable you to make the most of the mountain views as they are gorgeous and maybe a microwave would be useful. Apart from this I thoroughly recommend this property which is in a beautiful part of France.
Thank you for your lovely review. Lots of tips for future guests :-) We are delighted you had such a happy time. The main roads certainly become busy once the whole of Europe mobilises on its summer holidays, but there are always sneaky routes around the back! It is on our "to do" list to put furniture on the front terrace to make the most of the evening sun and the wonderful views of the mountains, so thank you for the nudge :-)
Update 04/05/2016 It is done. Brand new furniture for the front terrace has been delivered today. If you follow the link on this website to our own website, you will see links to our Facebook page where you can see photos. We are delighted with the result, and think they look fab :-)
This property did not disappoint the pictures do not do it justice. It was like borrowing a house from a friend so many lovely pictures and homely items it was like home from home.
The house was roomy enough for the 9 of us (4 adults 5 kids aged 6-12) to each find some hideaway space, and set over the 3 levels gave the house real character.
We all enjoyed the table tennis and pool was outstanding beautifully maintained by Bernie the pool man.
We visited the local area which was lovely and also went to Carcosonne although our favourite place had to be Collioure well worth a visit.
We are glad you had a lovely time in our home :-)
