About Juliet Maddan

I was born in Wensleydale and my ancestors have been living here for several generations. I am mother of three boys and one girl. It is wonderful that my husband and I have been able to bring our children up in such an unspoilt place. We would love to share this special place and give you a base to explore. We have experienced the beauty of the dales by walking, riding, fishing and canoeing.

Juliet Maddan purchased this barn in 1949

Why Juliet Maddan chose Hawes

The Bothy is completely secluded with its own entrance on a farm that is now our family home. The property is set within 40 acres, with wonderful views of the hills, moors and River Ure.

Its unspoilt setting is a wildlife haven. A great to place to unwind away from the busyness of life.

Despite being deep in the countryside, it is very easy to access by car with the A684 nearby.

A timeless place where every season has a beauty of its own.

What makes this barn unique

People staying in the Bothy have many opportunities to relax and unwind in the comfortable surroundings. Having the best of traditional luxuries and modern conveniences.

There are numerous things to do in the area. Including visits to traditional villages, buzzing market towns, golf courses and local attractions. Explore the stunning dales by foot, wheel, horse or bike. Excellent fishing is available in river behind.

Wensleydale has delcious food available; whether gourmet or fantastic pub meals.

Comfortable stay in the winter

  • 5 of 5

Quiet location. Good walking straight from the doorstep. Nicely decorated and appointed. Central heating and wood burning stove kept us warm and cosy during a very cold and snowy spell. Friendly and helpful host. Would stay at The Bothy again. Thank you.

Great place to get away.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place to stay for a long weekend. Such a breath of fresh air having no wifi or phone signal. Bliss.

The Bothy itself was very clean, plenty of space and has everything you need. It was great sitting looking out at the beautiful countryside- simple things like watching the grass move in the wind. Yep - we really need to move out of a city!

Lovely family run place, great to relax and explore the area (and there's lots to explore). Thank you

We had such a fabulous stay here. The owners are extremely friendly and charming with great local knowledge. The bed is super comfortable and the cottage is extremely cosy. We loved the walks and the fishing thanks to a recommendation from the owner. Great pubs and lots of choice. We will definitely come back and strongly recommend a stay here.

lovely cottage, superb location

  • 5 of 5

A well equipped property, everything we needed and all spotlessly clean and well presented. Loved the log burner and the super comfortable bed. There are many walks right from the doorstep and the surrounding landscape is stunning. Felt as though we were in the 'middle of nowhere' yet it's near to plenty of places to visit and eat. Particularly recommend The Wensleydale Heifer restaurant nearby.Juliet and her family were friendly and helpful if needed but unobtrusive. Loved watching the antics of the sheep right outside our window! Definitely hope to return.

Superb, absolute luxury!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two nights March 2015. The accommodation is truly luxurious, everything was catered for. The big deep bath ran extremely hot which was great for us as we like our baths hot at the end of a walking day, the shower too was powerful. The log burner is a real treat and makes the place extra cosy along with the comfy bed and feather pillows/duvets - like sinking into a cloud.

A very private place where you can take some magical walks from your doorstep - we did and enjoyed every minute of it. This place is a must!!

Owner's Response: Everyone seems to say how special the Bothy is. We have wonderful comments in our visitor's book. We love people coming and relaxing away from it all and let the beauty and tranquility wash over them. It is a bit like a paradise! Visitors have complete privacy with only the sound of the river and birdsong. Thank you Em for your kind comments...come again! A lot of people come back!
