Hare Farm Oast is a very special place to stay. The large beautiful building has been finished to a very high standard as a contemporary holiday home. It occupies a prime position in an idyllic setting with its own half acre plot and extensive far reaching views. We have lovingly breathed new life back into the farm building with its three roundels, originally used for drying and storing hops. Using traditional craftsmanship and materials in its renovation, the oast continues to boast its unique heritage and beauty, whilst providing understated luxury and comfort to those who stay there.

About Joanna Thompson

Our parents bought Hare Farm in 1985 when the Oast house was a redundant building (the last hop harvest on Hare Farm was in the 70s) and so they used it as their potting shed. The farm is now run by my brother, Stuart, in one of the most beautiful parts of the Sussex countryside. Myself, Stuart and Annie (sister-in-law) restored and converted the Oast house in 2010/11. Alongside the sheep farm and conservation schemes, we offer both the Oast house and a shepherds hut as self-catering accommodation.

Why Joanna Thompson chose Brede

Hare Farm is often recalled as a true “Darling Buds of May” setting, made all the more so by the oast house which holds so much history and beauty architecturally. We could not let it collapse and disappear. We have invested in restoring it to its original beauty, and converting it in to a high-spec holiday home for our guests to all enjoy. Such a unique and historic feature in the Sussex landscape is now secure for generations to come, and we are very proud to have enabled this to happen.

What makes this barn unique

Hare Farm Oast is unique for its building and situation. Firstly it offers an idyllic setting (far from the road with spectacular views across the Brede Valley). Secondly, the oast house is one of the most stunning properties one could wish to stay in. It is spacious throughout, has three roundels, so six round rooms to admire and many of the original features are retained (exposed brickwork, timber, vaulted ceilings, hop equipment). Thirdly, it is finished to a very high spec, including luxury master bedrooms and en-suites, a fabulous round kitchen with Corian worktops and a Rangemaster cooker, oak and tiled floors with underfloor heating throughout the downstairs, Sky Sports and more. It really is a very special place to stay.

Nearest airport Gatwick (1 hour's drive). Nearest train stations are Rye and Battle (1 hour from London). Channel Tunnel (1 hour's drive).


1 mile to the centre of the village of Brede. 6 miles to medieval town of Rye with all amenities and facilities. 8 miles to Tenterden and Battle.

The picturesque town of Rye is just 10 mins drive away with all the essentials covered, plus fabulous independent shops, pubs and restaurants. Hastings and Battle are also just 15 minutes drive away. 1066 country is bursting with leisure activities and places of historic interest.

Utility Room: Extra units, washing machine, drying line. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linen and some toiletries provided. Property cleaned before arrival. Linen changed weekly. Other: Bedroom 5 downstairs can double up as a break out room by day. Spacious and large, it has a TV and sofa, plus the bed is a great space to rest and relax.

An amazing retreat in spectacular surroundings!!

We hired the Oast for a special birthday in November, Jo was amazing in assisting us in ensuring all needs were catered for.

The property itself is first class, very warm and comfortable with fully equipped kitchen.

The setting is amazing looking out over rolling fields in a very tranquil part of E Sussex.

Had lunch in the local pub and burnt it off on a very nice local walk!

Would fully recommend the Oast for a special occasion of just a break from the norm!

Beautiful & Tranquil Oast House

We (a group of friends) recently stayed at The Oast House for a long weekend. We arrived to a welcome basket which was much appreciated and were delighted by our accommodation and beautiful surroundings.

The photos on the website are amazing, but you really can't quite get the full feel of the Oast House until you're there. We had plenty of wow moments and everyone had plenty of space and such a relaxing time. The only complaint we all had was that we wanted to stay longer.

Joanna and Stuart were so helpful during the booking process and whilst we were there. It was a real pleasure and we can not wait to go back.

The perfect spot for weekend away

After a lengthy search for accommodation that was large enough for 9 people and disabled friendly, I eventually found the Oast House. It was perfect. The owners went the extra mile to add a ramp to the property and my friends were all blown away by the beautiful interior and idyllic location.

I do not hesitate to recommend this property. I'm almost reluctant to submit this review because I want to come back here again. If too many people find this gem then it might be booked next time I want to visit!

Just Perfect !

We are a group of 10 friends who have stayed at Hare Farm Oast House several times over the last few years. It is the most beautiful setting, quiet, clean and well equipped. We would highly recommend it for gatherings as the perfect weekend relaxing 'getaway'

Excellent property - Great Holiday

The Oast House was excellent, as expected from the descriptions on the web-site There are views to die for and a garden which is safe and loads of fun for the children. We were 6 adults and 3 children aged 4,7,11. They loved rolling down the banks of the back garden. The lovely welcome pack was full of local produce. It was really convenient to have 2 fridges. A minor problem with the water boiler was handled quickly and effectively.

We enjoyed a meal at the 'local', the Red Lion and also bought their bread.

The helicopter taking off and landing at the Manor was a bonus.

Perfect property for exploring the area.

We would recommend unreservedly.
