The Buttery

Bedroom 1 and 5 have double beds. Bedroom 2 has double sofabed (a comfortable bedroom, and/or use this 'snug' with its flatscreen TV, DVD etc as TV room, office, library). Bedroom 3 has bunkbeds. Bedroom 4 has 2 singles.

Ground floor WC, 1st floor en-suite Jack-and-Jill walk-in-shower/WC to bedrooms 1 and 2, 2nd floor bathroom with bath and separate shower enclosure and WC. 2nd floor bathroom en-suite to bedroom 5 with bath, showerhead, WC.

Kitchen: glass splashbacks, stainless steel worktop, oven, 5-ring hob, fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, large extendible dining table for up to 18, electric blender.

Back entrance leading to outdoor laundry hanging area. Utility with plenty of space for coats, wetsuits etc. Washing machine. WC.

Front room: a wonderfully light-filled room. Triple sofa, double sofa, hi-fi with Ipod dock, DAB etc. Table football and extra dining chairs stored in understair cupboard.

About the property


The Buttery is a wonderful self-catering holiday home in Mortehoe, near Woolacombe, North Devon. We bought this property in the village's Victorian 'crescent' in July 2010 and have worked non-stop since then until July 2011, together with our excellent builder Pearce Barnstaple, to create what we feel is an ideal holiday home in a perfect North Devon village. The Buttery is now our own much-loved family holiday home and is also available for rent. If you choose The Buttery for a holiday we aim to make you want to come back again and again.

About Dominic Parkinson

I am an architect living in London. I know North Devon well, having holidayed here and worked on design projects in the area. Mortehoe has always struck me as a gem - amazing location and people, and not spoiled by excessive tourism. When in 2010 my husband Dominic and I had the opportunity to buy a run-down hotel/restaurant in the terrace at the heart of the village we jumped at the chance. The next 12 months were incredibly busy and satisfying ... with a huge effort by excellent local builder and a lot of design, structural work, conservation, inspiration and management, The Buttery was reborn as our own holiday home, which we are also going to rent out. We hope to have a lot of the same guests renting year after year. We would welcome you to our house in Mortehoe!

My friends and I trawled through many websites featuring houses for rent in Devon before creating a shortlist of 5 favourites. We then voted and Cromlech House came out top. Fantastic well equipped house in a picture perfect location. We found Cromlech House a terrific place to stay, in the beautiful village of Mortehoe. The house has great character, is large and spacious and met all our needs. It has a great sized kitchen for cooking, eating and socialising in. Great TV and Wifi facilities. The location of the house is ideal and surrounded by little shops, 3 pubs, a restaurant and a Cream Tea cafe ... what more do you need. We loved the house and were very comfortable in it. We thought the village was just picture perfect with all the little shops and of course the wealth of pubs. We had a lovely meal in the Chichester and another in Rockleigh. Also a cream tea in the little cottage and fish and chips from the takeaway shop so did our bit to support local businesses. We would certainly recommend Otter cycle hire in Braunton. We took bikes for the afternoon 1pm to 5pm for £9 each however while out called the office and extended our time to 8pm for just another £3 per bike. During July and August they are open until 8pm. We did a 16 mile round trip which took us to a cafe to be recommended in Fremington and back? The trail also runs past The Braunton Inn which is also to be recommended with it's large outdoor eating area. There are other both shorter and longer routes you can do passing places of interest and with many places to stop for refreshments along the way. We would also recommend a visit to the quaint village of Croyde which also has a great beach. Dominic, the owner runs a very smooth operation with excellent communication throughout every stage of the booking, the holiday and very prompt repayment of the security deposit after the holiday. We couldn't fault the house, the location or the service we received from Dominic. We hope to return again soon. Dear Dominic and Iona, We had SUCH a wonderful stay! The house was gorgeous, everyone loved it, and the area is just amazing. The boys loved being a stone's throw from the pub ;) It was just what the family needed. It was one of the most amazing experiences, you could be anywhere in the world sat on that beach watching the sun go down. We're big travellers but the others in our group barely venture out of their hometown, it was a great experience for all. I think we will definitely be staying again! 10 minutes very pleasant walk to Grunta Beach - a bit longer to get back up the hill! Walking distance to other great beaches at Combesgate, Barricane and Woolacombe, and 20 mins drive to Croyde beach.


Buses pass the house (to Barnstaple). National Cycle Route 27 is also directly outside the house. Nearest rail station: Barnstaple. Airports: Exeter, Bristol. Driving: M5, North Devon Link Road.


At the heart of North Devon's best village! 10 mins drive to Ilfracombe, 30 mins cycle to Ilfracombe via disused railway, 20 mins drive to Barnstaple.

Notes on accommodation: Cleaning/Linen/Towels: Our excellent changeover/cleaning team will ensure that all is spic and span. Bedlinen and towels are included. Both houses have solar thermal panels on roof. This automatically supplements the gas boiler with carbon-free energy whenever the sun is shining. Outside: Front of house is on Mortehoe's lovely Victorian terrace leading down the hill to the sea. There is also rear access to house... path leads leads down the hill towards the sea. Great Family property in perfect Devon Village

We had a lovely stay in The Buttery with our grown-up family which made us a group of 7 adults and 2 dogs. The house comfortably accommodated us all. There are 3 bath/shower rooms upstairs + cloakroom downstairs. The beds were comfortable with nice linen. The kitchen was the heart of the house and the large table allowed for fun meals! The kitchen was equipped with everything needed. The house was very clean and welcoming. There is a fantastic utility room with hanging area for wetsuits and a bin for rinsing outside the property at the back. When the sun shone we all enjoyed sitting on the back balcony. The pub opposite, "The Chichester Arms", was very friendly and our dogs enjoyed their visits too. We had many lovely walks but particularly enjoyed ambling along Woolacombe Beach, just perfect! Thank you to Dominic for his help in arranging our stay.He was very responsive to any enquiry and our housekeeping deposit was returned within hours of us arriving home... I would definitely recommend this property for large family/friend groups.

Minimalistic, Clean & Family-Friendly

The Buttery was perfect for all ages in our family. Close to a lovely beach and superb coastal walks. We loved the views of the countryside. Great choice of shops, pubs and takeaways in village. would love to come again.

Fabulous house in a picturesque village

Mortehoe is a small picturesque village with fabulous walks to Ilfracome (approx 6 miles) and Woolacombe. We had a lovely lunch at the Chichester Arms - opposite the house and a fab Thai fish curry from Rockleigh takeaway.

The Buttery was great for a party of friends, a large lounge and very well equipped kitchen (we didn't do much cooking though!!), 5 great bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The terrace was a sun trap and when the sun disappeared at the back of the house the balcony at the front was equally great.

We'd love to visit again :)

The house was absolutely incredible, very clean, modern, spacious and

true to the photos. In a great location, in the heart of Mortehoe,

with a range of places to eat and drink. A 5 minute walk to the beach

(slightly on a hill), or a short 5 minute drive to Woolacombe beach.

The owners could not have been more helpful or friendly. Would

recommend to anyone wanting somewhere near the beach, whether friends

or families.

A fantastic stay!

A very enjoyable stay. Beds are very comfortable, house is very clean and inviting, and all rooms have a welcoming feel. The balcony is perfect for a morning breakfast, and I loved having the piano in the front room to play on. Will be back for more!

The Buttery was fantastic

Upon our arrival at the Buttery the whole group (3 years-54 years) were really pleased with the accomodation. The children loved the toys and bunk beds, whilst my teenage daughter loved the 'den' bedroom with the double futon as it gave her privacy and a massive TV to watch all week. The Buttery kitchen became the adults evening drinking venue and also had everything you could ever need for preparing meals for a large group. The wetsuit drainer in the the utility was well used and stopped everything else getting wet.

The pub over the road; the Chicester we found served the best food and drink. Also the Beach Cafe on Barricane Beach was really good.

The owners were extremely helpful and attentive to our queries; I would definately recommend the Buttery and very much hope to return.
