About Richard Graham

I have lived in the house next to the Bothy, which we we have recently converted into a holiday cottage, for the last ten years with my wife Wanda. I work from home a fair part of the time so can hopefully answer any questions either before your visit, or during your stay, and suggest good places to visit and things to do.

Richard Graham purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Richard Graham chose County Durham

We enjoy living here for the beautiful Teesdale countryside, which is still fairly undiscovered, and the market town of Barnard Castle itself. We also appreciate the good roads links to other areas, including a range of interesting towns and cities and other areas of great countryside.

What makes this cottage unique

The Bothy is a detached holiday cottage in a rural location, but has all the services of Barnard Castle just over a mile away.

It has been carefully converted from a 1810 listed building to provide accommodation for up to four people in one double and one twin bedded room.

Although not everyone will need it, there is storage space for bikes and coming in wet and muddy from a mountain bike ride etc. would not be an issue.

Excellent property in a very good location for touring the area and staying local

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted by the owners on arrival who showed us into the bothy and explained where everything was etc., there was a very helpful folder as well with instructions for use for the all appliances and the heating. It was extremely well equipped, even with t towels which I didn't expect as at other places I've always taken them. There was a welcome bottle of wine, nice biscuits, milk and tbags and coffee to keep us going until we got to the shops. It was very cosy, we had some windy/wet days but the house was always warm we didn't need to put the heating on at all. The beds were comfy, the shower worked well, everything was spotlessly clean. We had use of tables and chairs in the garden. There was a dog in residence at the main house but he was very friendly as were the owners!!!

I would certainly recommend this holiday accommodation, it ticked all the boxes for us. Great value for the money.

PERFECT quiet vacation getaway!

  • 5 of 5

First off, the cottage provided was absolutely perfect for our family of four (15 yo. boy & 11 yo. girl). It was basically a small home away from home with all the necessary amenities and located close to Barnard Castle. All the major grocery chains are available within 20 minutes drive (Morrisons in Barnard Castle, and Sainsbury's and Tesco Express in Bishop Auckland). The location provided a perfect "base camp" for our daily excursions (although likely too far for many others) as we travelled to Liverpool, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Gretna Green, and even Edinburgh.

The owners, Richard and Wanda were absolutely delightful and greeted us on our arrival. We also had many subsequent conversations during our stay. They also have two cats and a dog which were a pleasure to meet and quickly became "adopted" by us.

My family has no complaints and would HIGHLY recommend this rental to ANY couple or family of 3 or 4!

An absolute gem!

  • 5 of 5

The Bothy was a delight to stay in. It has been renovated to a very high standard with clever and imaginative design. It is very well equipped (everything you might need has been anticipated). It is also very clean and well maintained.

We stay in holiday cottages regularly and this is better than most - and may well be the best we have stayed in.

The owner is very helpful and has given thought to what a visitor may need to know both before arrival and during the stay. It is an easy to find property and the directions we were given were spot on. We received a warm, friendly welcome on our arrival.

It's very close to Barnard Castle and High Force but situated in open countryside so days out were close by without having to stay in a town or village - the best of both worlds.

I would thoroughly recommend this property and hope to return for another visit.

A great week at "The Bothy"

  • 5 of 5

First time for us at this lovely cottage but we have stayed in the area many times. The "Bothy" is an interesting property because the owners have put the living accommodation upstairs and the bedrooms and bathroom downstairs, we thought this worked well and made best use of the space and best use of the great views. The kitchen was very well equipped, we've stayed at cottages where the knives are blunt, the casserole dishes don't have lids and you have to spend a few hours cleaning up before you can start cooking. Not so here, everything was spotless and working. The sitting area was comfortable and we felt at home straight away. The bathroom was modern, spotless and well laid out. The main bedroom was well equipped although I found the mattress a little firm, this is obviously a very personal view, I simply like a soft mattress!! The cottage has electric heating in all rooms which is very efficient but probably expensive to run, however the weather was kind and we only needed it during a couple of cool evenings. Again all the equipment is spotless and worked perfectly. So all in all a great place to stay, our host Richard, was very friendly and helped to make our stay memorable. Would we return? yes we certainly would. many thanks Richard "The Best Bothy in Barney"!!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for such a lovely review, and just a quick note for future visitors to say that electricity costs are included in the price and we hope the idea of a slightly firm bed won't put you off too much!

Fantastic little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Everything you should need is provided, the welcome package is a lovely touch. Peaceful surroundings, but not too far from the nearest town of Barnard Castle where there is a supermarket and plenty of pubs and coffee shops. Friendly owner, would highly recommend a stay in this lovely cottage.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the lovely review, and we should say the welcome pack is generally just a bottle of wine and some biscuits.

Barnard Castle is easily reached by road, via the M6 and A66 from the west and the A1 and A66 from the East.

Approximate distances/guide times: London 250 miles/5 hours; Leeds 75 miles/1.5 hours; Manchester 120 miles/2 hours, Edinburgh or Glasgow 150 miles/3 hours.

The Bothy is just over a mile from Barnard Castle and provides a perfect base for exploring Teesdale. Half an hour by car also opens up Swaledale to the south and Weardale to the north, both good walking areas, and an hour by car will easily let you reach the Lake District, the North York Moors, Durham or Newcastle/Gateshead.

Further Details:

Barnard Castle is an attractive Georgian market town on the Durham/North Yorkshire border sitting on the River Tees. It has a wide range of good local shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways, a supermarket and garage. The extensive Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle is well worth a visit, as are the remains of the Castle and the Abbey ruins at nearby Egglestone. Raby Castle and Rokeby Hall are nearby major historic houses, but please check their opening details if these are of interest. Barnard Castle Golf Course is under a mile away and there is a good swimming pool in Barnard Castle.

There are riverside paths and woodland walks starting from the town and in the rest of Teesdale there are walks ranging from riverside and woodland trails to fells and moorland. Middleton-in-Teesdale is just under ten miles, an attractive Teesdale town with several teashops and pubs, and High Force (one of the most impressive waterfalls in England), Cow Green Reservoir and the waterfalls of Cauldron Snout are a few miles further on. It is also well worth travelling through to Alston, one of the highest market towns in England.

There are several mountain bike trails in nearby Hamsterley Forest, and a specialist downhill trail. For road cyclists Teesdale and Weardale offer some great rides, including some of the highest roads in England. There are also some little visited local reservoirs, with good circular paths, and some railway trails for family cycling.

Durham Cathedral is often described as the greatest Norman building in England, and the Newcastle/Gateshead riverside has been transformed with the Millennium Bridge, Baltic Gallery and Sage Music Centre. There is good city centre shopping in Newcastle and out of town shopping at the Metro Centre on the A1.

The Lake District, Hadrian's Wall and the Nothumberland Coast also make good longer days out.
