House in Boltana, Aragon, Spain - Quiet Location With Terraces And Garden

La Casita is a charming 3 bedroom traditional stone house situated on the edge of the ancient hill village of Boltaña. At the end of a quiet lane it has outside terraces and garden overlooking fields. Boltaña, in the central Spanish Pyrenees, is an old village with many narrow streets and little squares to wander through including the ruins of an 11th century castle. Boltaña is superbly located for exploring the beautiful Ordesa and Monte Perdido national park and natural parks of Mountains and Canyons of Guara and Posets- Maladeta. The area is perfect for walking, climbing, mountain biking, swimming in the rivers, water activities such as rafting, kayak, canoeing as well touring the area and visiting historic towns such as Ainsa, Alquezar, Benasque to name a few and tasting the local Somontano wines. The annual August fiesta in Boltaña has the traditional music of the Ronda and Palotiau, dancing with sticks as well as many other events including dance bands.

Why Nigel & Caroline Kaines chose Sobrarbe

In February 2004 we went on holiday to the Spanish Pyrenees. We loved the area so much that we looked to buy a holiday home. After much travelling we found La Casita in Boltana however it needed a little modernising such as a new kitchen and new roof. We have since spent many holidays renovating the house to make it a comfortable holiday home. We have added a new terrace leading off from the the new kitchen diner, (which was a bedroom), added a log burning stove, replaced windows and put in french doors. We feel it is now our "home from home" and hope that prospective holidayers are equally comfortable.

What makes this house unique

When we arrive at La Casita we love sitting on the terrace watching the birds, the sheep grazing in the fields below and enjoying the peace and quiet of course with a glass of wine in hand.

Boltaña is a large village with bars, restaurants, shops - virtually everything you need all within walking distance. The area is a fantastic base for exploring the Pyrenees, the nearby Ordesa national park, walking, sightseeing, cycling, the huge range of water activities, swimming in the river Ara and lastly but not least tasting the local Somontano wines which we had never heard of before we visited the area and there are some very good wines to be tasted. The five star monasterio hotel offers spa facilities if you want a relaxing treat and a very fine restaurant.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought and effort has gone into its modernisation but with the sympathetic retention of its traditional character. Notes:
Notes on accommodation: La casita has been sympathetically renovated retaining many of its original features including wooden beams, fireplace and floor tiles. The house is heated by electric heaters and in the salon there is a log burning stove. Outside: There are two terraces and a garden.There are also sunloungers, two outside tables with parasols and 8 chairs. Barbecues are available to use. Utility Room: Washing machine, iron, ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen and towels (except beach) are included and are changed weekly.

Still Stunning!

We have been to the house before and in the last review we said don't tell anybody as we wanted to go again. We told our friends and they asked to come with us to stay at La Casita. I am really pleased to say that they were not disappointed as the house again was exactly as we had described and fully equipped. They loved the house, the village and the area and as a result we had yet another fabulous week at La Casita. They weather was exceptional as well being very warm and we had a thunderstorm later in the week you would pay money to see in England. Our friends were truly impressed, with all aspects of the property, the area and wildlife, don't miss out on what is on offer here.

Exactly as pictured and expected

"The house was exactly as described and well equipped. The location is wonderful and close to the old town and its narrow streets and the house and town are packed full of charm. The information pack is really useful and the narrative of the photos and pictures in the house is a lovely being informative and a guide as well. Wine for the weary upon arrival is a very welcome touch. The balconies are superb for relaxation and sunbathing for when you cant be bothered to go and look at all the stunning local scenery and take in the the local walks down by the river or up into the hills. Please don't tell anybody else about the house as we wont be able to come back when we want to."

In Boltaña there are several bars, restaurants, supermarkets, a pharmacy, baker, butcher, banks, a very helpful tourist information centre and library with wifi. The river Ara running through the village has a popular swimming area at La Gorga. On the outskirts of the village is the Monasterio, a five star hotel, with restaurant and spa facilities available to non hotel residents. Ainsa town is 5 miles away and has many more shops and restaurants. Water activities such as rafting, kayaking and canyoning can be booked in Ainsa. Barbastro, 45 minutes drive, is the heart of the Somontano wine region.
