'Purple' (neighbour of RED, also on O.D.) is the penthouse of an old, very clean, building overlooking the historic market of Porta Carini. This 4th floor walk-up is quiet, full of light and has no neighbours. Flat consists of entrance, bathroom, kitchen/sitting room and bedroom/study. A large terrace off the kitchen, has a beautiful view overlooking Carini market - -dining, lounging & barbecuing. Elegant furniture, fist class linens and crockery, top range cooking utensils with modern amenities (WIFI, Sat TV, multi system DVD, washing machine, IPOD player). Just unpack and enjoy the freedom. Ours is a home that will make you feel at home. Located five minutes from Palazzo Massimo, the epicenter of Palermo, one does not need a car while staying here (but there is parking nearby). For your leisure, included in the price, a housekeeper comes for 1.5 hours Monday-Saturday. If you need to chill in the sun or love markets and cooking or want to dig in and visit Palermo, this is the place.
Hello future guest, I have lived and worked around the world and know what it is like to look out the window and feel the need to want to get away to a beautiful, exotic (but not too), sensory filled, interesting, sunny, place. I learned to appreciate renting a flat rather than staying in a hotel - -no matter how upscale. However, I was often disappointed with the decor, the quality of the linens, the style.
When I came to Palermo I decided to create a 'home' as I would like to have it: elegant but not overstated, with a good kitchen, good quality crockery and linens and good art on the walls. I wished it to be quiet, full of light and airy. And I wanted to be able to eat outdoors, under the sun or the stars, with a view of the city before me. I hope to have achieved that, for you.
We stayed in John's apartment for 6 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was well equipped, clean and cosy. We also loved the location: close to the main attractions of Palermo and located in a nice and lively neighborhood. We didn't see John because he was traveling, but his friend helped us perfectly. John also responded very quickly by email when we had a problem with the Internet. Definitely recommend this place!
Aparment very nice. Possesses all conveniences.
Excellent location. Within walking distance of all the main places to visit in Palermo.
For those wanting to experience Palermo in a real setting above the Capo market life and want to avail themselves of the wonderful produce to cook themselves, this is it. Eating on the roof terrace in the setting sun was the only place to be on a warm evening with the sunlight hitting the Cathedral spire and the views to the mountains around. The apartment was well equipped and cleaned twice weekly and there was someone downstairs available for any requests. The owner provides a complete guide to the area, the apartment and restaurants. We ate in most evenings but during the day street food is the way to go. The apartment is very nicely decorated with some nice antique pieces and the owners photographs on the walls. I would recommend the property to my friends who are interested in self-catering. A word of warning, there are four flights of stairs to the apartment, not the best for luggage. It would be ideal for groups who enjoy wine and food as you can also rent the adjoining apartment.
Amazing place and the perfect holiday home. Right in the middle of a fantastic market with lovely views from the terrace and balcony, but also quiet at night. Plenty of nice restaurants within walking distance and no real need for a car. Charming appartment with lots to keep you interested, well equipped kitchen and library. Free Wi-fi. Very helpful taxi service provided by owner and well informed recommendations regarding restaurants and bars. Perfect home for a fantastic holiday.
We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Mike and Jenny.

Mondello offers windsurf, diving, tennis, open-air cinema, open air dancing, many good restaurants, pizzerias and snack bars. There is a wonderful game park for small children. And the sea is very child-friendly, no tides, with life-guards. Important: one can swim late in the season in Sicily (well into November) as the temperatures range between 18°-25°C. We have had 25° at Christmas for the last two years!
Palermo Airport 'Falcone & Borsellino' connects Palermo via bus, train and taxi - -as well as car rentals. Ditto from Trapani airport (bus 1hr)
Bus leaves on the 1/4hr (5am to 11pm) and takes 40mn. Piazza Politeama is your stop. From there it is a short walk to the flat. FYI: we, locals, all take the bus.
Train: Trinacria Express to Palermo Centrale, 45’, on the hour, 5am to 11pm.
Car rentals: Hertz; Avis; Europcar; SIXT and others at airport.
The flat is located in the heart of Palermo. One can walk to Teatro Massimo (opera and music), the Salinas Archeological Museum, the Teatro Politeama (also opera and music) the Modern Art Gallery, Piazza Pretoria & amazing fountain, the nearby old Martorana Orthodox church, the famous Palermo Arab-Norman Cathedral and the Norman Royal Palace with its gorgeous Cappella Palatina - -just to mention a few among the many nearby places of interest. Mondello, spectacular town and beach is 10km away.
Palermo is a city of colours, flavours and tastes. The people are very friendly and the city is as safe as any large city. One can either walk or rent bikes or scooters. It can also be fun to rent a horse carriage for the day and see the city as they did in the 'old' days.
Food is a big part of everyday life. The open air markets (very fresh produce) of Il Capo, Ballaro, Via Sant' Agostino and Via Bandiera are all within walking distance. After the succulent pastas and special grilled fish dishes you will adore the amazing pastries, the ice creams, the rich, dense coffee, the unique bread with sesame seeds and the wide selection of Sicilian wines.
Gyms are within walking distance as is the posh shopping area (Via Ruggero Settimo and Via Libertà) and the cheaper old shops of Via Maqueda.
Day trips are easily organized and one can have unique experiences travelling not far from Palermo to towns such as Monreale, Bagheria, Rovine di Solunto etc.
The sun is also an important part of Sicily and one will want to go to the beach. The white sandy beach and port town of Mondello, with its lapis lazuli water to have the Gods of the Caribbean turn green with envy, is fifteen minutes away. One can rent two beach chairs and umbrella at 20 €. There is a very good restaurant, Sympaty, at the end of the pier, past the main piazza. Caflisch restaurant (eat in/take out & easier with kids), one of Palermo’s most outstanding patisserie, is also one of Sicily’s undisputed best. They serve an informal lunch under pleasant, shady, trees. It is three minutes from the beach. In the summer, don’t miss the sublime gelo di melone (watermelon gel). Extensive wine list.
Finally, for those who are slightly more ambitious, long day trips (with beautiful and interesting stops on the way) can be taken to:
Catania: 220km (A19 highway).
Trapani: 105km (A29 highway).
Messina: 230km (A20 highway).
