Our traditional family chalet is situated in a fabulous ski and spa resort. Sitting on a sunny shelf high above the Rhone valley, Ovronnaz is a Swiss mountain village of lovely wooden chalets, where the traditional occupations continue alongside the modern ski and thermal spa facilities. Set above the road and reached by steps, the chalet has wonderful, uninterrupted mountain views across the valley. The chalet interior is a real family home. Main floor: log-burning fire in the gorgeous double height lounge area, a fully fitted and equipped kitchen, a spacious dining area, double bedroom and bathroom; upstairs: 2 further bedrooms, 2nd bathroom, and mezzanine sitting room area with large window; downstairs: large entrance hall with ample space for outdoor coats and shoes, 4th bedroom with single beds, utility room with washing machine and dryer. The chalet has a lovely south and east facing balcony with outdoor furniture and is surrounded by its own large garden.
Thermalp - Thermal spa centre: Truly unique - In winter with your lift pass you can choose to include entry to the thermal spa and pools. At the end of an energetic day on the slopes, lie back and relax in one of the three naturally heated pools, indoor and out, enjoying the stunning views of the snow clad mountains. A memorable experience. Kids will love the outdoor pools with their Jacuzzis whirlpools and water jets, all heated to about 34C. The centre also offers a fitness centre, sauna and a great range of health and beauty treatments. Unlike some spa resorts, Ovronnaz attracts a young and family clientele and no, the water's not smelly! The thermal centre is open all year round which means the village always has a warm and hospitable atmosphere whatever the time of year.
Summer: In summer the hiking opportunities are fantastic, whether you prefer a walk through green and flowered alpine meadows to a restaurant for lunch or a longer trek in the dramatic scenery of the high mountains, there are over 150 km of marked footpaths. Mountain bikers will love the 50km of trails through the stunning scenery. Paragliders will find themselves in an ideal area to fly with views of the mountains and Rhone valley. Access to the high mountains is easy with the chair lift open in summer from June to October. Just below the village, don't forget to have a relaxing moment tasting the delicious local wines from the picturesque vineyards (another well-kept secret). Further afield, children will love the thrill of the 'flying fox' rides of the real mountain adventure playgrounds in nearby resorts. For those who prefer not to visit in the height of summer, the fiery colours of the trees in autumn are unforgettable and the weather can be just as glorious.
Skiing and Snow sports: Ovronnaz has 2 ski schools in the village centre offering ski and snowboard lessons. There are also 2 ski hire shops located with the ski schools. In the village centre, overlooked by cafes for the non-skiers, is a beginners' slope with its own tow. The next step is the chair lift and the higher slopes. The main mountain restaurant is just at the top of the main chair lift and easily accessible for skiers and non-skiers. For those who prefer more tranquil pursuits through beautiful forest scenery, cross-country skiers are well catered for with trails accessible from our chalet as are winter rambling trails. There are also snow shoe trails from the main chair lift.
The chalet is newly available for rent, so we haven't had any guests yet, but we think it's wonderful!
We spent a wonderful week at Ovronnaz. The chalet is spacious and comfortable, very well-equipped and spotless. The views from the balcony (where I could quite happily have spent the entire week!) are breath-taking. There is also a lovely little garden, ideal for children.
The village of Ovronnaz (a short drive away) is charming, with really everything you need. The Coop is very well stocked, the bakery excellent and delicatessen (run by a very friendly couple) an absolute treasure-trove!
There are numerous wonderful walks, and we recommend a visit to the Thermal Baths (we went twice!), Martigny and Sion - there really is a great deal to do in the area (if you can tear yourself away from the view...).
Ovronnaz is a beaurtiful village with pistes right above on the mountain and also Thermal Spa. The chalet was better than we expected and we were very excited when we arrived. The view is stunning anytime day or night. Very warm and everything in perfect condition. Everything was perfect I recommend it to all but it has one disadvantage for those that are not well trained or in shape - too many stairs to get to paradise!
The chalet was really wonderful: equipment and housekeeping excellent, view spectacular, owners very, very friendly, agency at Ovronnaz also helpful and friendly.
Really enough space for 8 persons and a Baby.
Veritable recommended for Summer or Winter holidays !
We stayed in the summer 2008. The chalet is very well positioned quite high up in the mountains. It is very clean and well equipped and large enough to house 7 of us with ease. The views from the balcony are spectacular. Thermalp is definitely worth a visit, the children really enjoyed it. The chair lift from Ovronnaz up the mountain was very enjoyable with clearly marked paths for you to follow. Martigny has the best art gallery we have ever visited and was not at all expensive.
I would definitely recommend this property for a summer or winter break.
Our family (from the USA) rented the chalet from the owners over Easter break. The house is much, much nicer than the pictures show it to be (although heed their warning, there is a steep climb up to it). The views are absolutely incredible. The house is maintained well and has all you need to cook there, including a fondue pot. The owners were very easy to work with, quite welcoming and O-Vacance (the local agent) was able to help us get our lost luggage delivered from the flight. Ovrannaz is nice and central and we were able to do day trips to Lusanne, Zermatt, and Aosta, Italy. But my kids said the chalet and town were their favorite memories of the trip.
The town of Ovrannaz also has all the facilities you'd want (including a grocery), is very quaint, and is not overcrowded. We speak fractured French, but were very welcomed by the people in town. My husband and kids went skiing, using a local school and had a great time. We went to the restaurant Vieux Valais and the food was superb! We also went to the thermal spas and were able to lay back in the warm water and look at beautiful, snow-covered mountains. The last 2 days we were there it snowed heavily, so I recommend a car with snow tires or chains -- we had snow tires and really needed them.
We had a great time and are already planning when we can go back. I highly recommend the area and the chalet.
Ovronnaz is surrounded by internationally known ski resorts such as Verbier and Crans Montana, but has, until now, been largely known only to the Swiss. The attractive ski slopes can be reached by a free shuttle bus or by car. The chalet has a garage at road level. The road to Ovronnaz winds up through the vineyards of the main wine growing area in Switzerland before reaching the alpine meadows in sight of the stunning mountains above. The chalet is in an excellent position, close to alpine meadows for walking in Summer. It is also within walking distance of the village centre and thermal baths, although there is a local bus too. In the Rhone valley below you are not far from the castles, museums and other attractions of Sion and Martigny.
Other Activities: Thermal spa centre with Sauna, fitness centre, wellness and beauty therapies. Wine-growing area with vineyard visits.
Ski: Renowned for its unique microclimate, sparkling, sunny days with an abundance of snow the resort of Ovronnaz has ski uplift rising from 1350 metres to 2500 metres. The runs are 30% beginner, 50% intermediate and 20% expert. The three cross country 'loops' total 25km and there are 20 km of marked footpaths and a 12 km snowshoe trail. All for a fraction of the cost of some better known ski resorts and you can include entry to the thermal baths in your lift pass!
