About Carl Smith

Pauline and I have been married for 33 years and for the last 22 years we've been running the Guinea Grill in Mayfair, we also have a famous pie pub called the Windmill just off Regent Street. Our daughter Alice is a budding film maker and son George who is a hospitality graduate works for us at the Windmill.

As experienced restaurateurs and hoteliers, we like to make sure guests are happy and that includes those staying at Chalet Peter.

We love outdoor life, people, food, music and dancing (me).

Carl Smith purchased this chalet in 2007

Why Carl Smith chose Gries, Pinzgau

In July 2007, our chef introduced us to a friend of his called Maria who is an Austrian restaurateur working in London. Maria explained that she would love to live in Zell am See one day. We'd had never heard of it but Austria is our favourite country for skiing. We love the atmosphere and friendliness of the people. What really got us thinking was Maria's description of Zell am See in the summer. She described the lakes, mountains, scenery and the stunning Grossclockner high alpine trail. To cut a long story short, we booked flights and took a weeks holiday and we loved it. Before I knew what was happening my wife and son had me sitting in front of a property agent, we bought the first house we saw. Mad but the best thing we've done!

What makes this chalet unique

Although our house is close to Zell am See and Kaprun we're surrounded by farms and beautiful countryside. The house is big and this means that we can invite friends and no one feels 'crowded'. There's bags of room to relax. We could have bought an apartment for much less but then we wouldn't have had the garden and as we live in central London we just love the space. We're so lucky that the house house has big picture windows and we never tire of looking through them.

Beautiful chalet in a great location

  • 5 of 5

The chalet is large and comfortable with a homely feel. All the rooms are spacious and have great views from the picture windows. We particularly liked the garden which stayed sunny all through the day. Zell Am See is a great base in the summertime, with loads to do close by.

Fantastic Chalet

  • 5 of 5

We (3 families of 8 people in total) had very relaxing time in Chalet Peter. The house was very clean, well maintained and modern whilst retaining the Austrian character. It's more spacious than we expected from the photos. It's extremely well equipped allowing for homemade baking too! We made use of all the facilities incl. table tennis, sauna and playing in the snow in the garden. The skiing was easy to get to and plenty to choose from. The customer service - both in the UK and local was excellent. We are hoping to return next year!

Chalet Peter

  • 5 of 5

A spacious, well equipped chalet which accommodated two families easily and never felt cramped. The lounge/dining area was fantastic for communal living. Sauna and table tennis room were a welcome addition and were regularly used.

Great location giving easy access by car to skiing in Zell am See, Kaprun and Saalbach Hinterglemm. A fantastic base for exploring the area.

Lake Zell
Car: necessary

The lake at Zell am See is 10 minutes drive away and has 3 lake beaches. The lake reaches a very comfortable 21/22c in the summer. You can take excursions on the lake including dinner dances. Sailing, water ski and windsurf is also available.

Salzburg is 1 hour and fifteen minutes by car, Insbruck is 2 hours and Munich around 2 1/2 hours drive. Car hire is essential in order to take full advantage of this wonderful region.

The village of St Georgian is 750 meters, Bruck is 1.5km and Zell am See around 5km. The high Alpine road leading to the Grossglockner is accessed from Bruck.

Further Details:

Zell am See is a unique summer and winter resort. In the summer you have the lake, mountains, high Alpine Grossklockner mountain trail plus skiing on the glacier. In the winter you are at the centre of any number of brilliant ski resorts.

Wealth generated from tourism means facilities are always being improved. An example of this is the multi million Euro Tauern Spa development. Amazing

There are very good supermarkets at Shutdorf (on the way to Zell am See) including Maxi Markt and Media Markt. Masses of vegetables and fruit, meat deli stuff and fresh bread. The organic farm on the slopes above the house has a restaurant selling their own beef and is open on some evenings. The Rodelbahn toboggan run is close to the house and they make their own bread and brew their own beer. There are numerous other restaurants in the nearby villages of a uniformly good and sometimes excellent standard. Zell and See is well worth visiting for excellent food and drink. Even the 5 star hotels are reasonably priced. In fact you can enjoy a very good lunch in the lakeside garden of the Grand Hotel for 10/12 Euros for a main course.
