Our attractive three bedroom villa offers a peaceful holiday home, a very convenient base for discovering the delights of Garfagnana. The house is situated within walking distance of "Il Nido dell'Aquilla" bar and pizzeria and 'Linda's' Restaurant, which provides traditional home-cooked Italian cuisine. 'Casa Limonella' is ideal for all year round rental: the stone house is cool enough for summer comfort, and fully central heated for winter warmth. The views are spectacular, on the edge of Orecciella National Park, a wonderful location for hiking, woodland walks, horse-trekking, mountain biking and climbing. The house is the perfect place to relax and feel as if you have been transported back in time, before the pressures of modern day living.
We are two brothers and their wives living in Scotland, who decided to get together to buy this little gem, after holidaying in the area for many years. We have made many friends and have really fallen in love with this part of the Tuscan region, and we are sure you will too.
Sarah Everett purchased this cottage in 2007
We love Sassorosso because of the fantastic feeling of tranquility as soon as you get there. You can leave all the stress of modern living behind and relax.
The scenery all around you is spectacular, and there are all sorts of lovely places to visit. From idyllic villages, to fortresses, lakes, mountains, a national park on your doorstep and the coast is also within reach for day trips. The food is fantastic, recommended restaurants are in the visitors pack. The area is easily accessible with Pisa airport an hour and a half's drive.
Great for hillwalking and exploring the Garfagnana region, there is also Horse-riding nearby and Caves. We provide beach towels so you can travel light and have a day at the coast. Cinque Terre is a unique set of five villages built into the cliff-face. Definitely worth a visit if you have time. Florence is accessible as a day trip and Lucca is also a beautiful place to visit. Information on places to go and things to see, is available in the house. The nearest shop (which is very well stocked) is 7 minutes away and the nearest supermarket is about 15 minutes away by car so you can stock up and enjoy a barbeque whilst sipping some local wine and enjoying the view- our favourite pastime.
"This is our second visit to Casa Limonella which has been just as good, if not better than the first. Excellent walking along Forestry tracks and mountain paths in the area. A wonderful area for Geology. Looking forward to returning."
Duncan & Diane - August 2-10th, 2014
"This is our second visit to Casa Limonella and it's just as welcoming as we remembered. Highly recommend "Il Grotto del Vento". We'll be back."
James, Toni, Natalie, Jamie & Sam Taylor - August 10-24th, 2014
Lovely holiday in Casa Limonella. We did some of the trips you suggested and really enjoyed the fantastic scenery. Everything in the house you could ever need. It was a great experience of Italy." Irene & Iain, 14th Sept 2013
"Thank you so much for the opportunity to stay a week in your lovely cottage. This place is heavenly, with all spectacular views all around. We've had a wonderful week here, everything worked perfectly, including all the friendly people of the village we got to know."
Susa, Virpi, and Timi.Finland -16th June 2012
"We have enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing week. The cottage is lovely, and today we were able to ejoy the various delights of all 3 terraces, plus lovely walks around Corfino. To hear the Cuckoo call was truly magical! - Thank you!" Ross, John, Alison and Chris, Glasgow/London - 28th April 2012
This little cottage has everything you could possibly need and more, it's quirky with stone walls, steps leading to bedrooms, a larder where you can see the rock it's clinging on to, and a fabulous log burner with as many logs as you wish. But best of all is the stunning scenery and amazing views from every window. With three different levels of patio we were spoilt for choice of where to sit for our meal. We were lucky enough to have stunning weather and therefore was able to walk down to the village with all its cobbled streets and church. Sarah provided loads of information on places to see and visit with very detailed instructions of how to get there and how long it would take. We visited the walled city of Lucca that has amazing architecture and lots of little shops and cafes. Also Devil's Bridge, oh my goodness that is scary to walk over but well worth it.
A fantastic week in Sassorosso. Owners were more than happy to be flexible with dates allowing us to stay Sunday to Sunday. Fully equipped, (washing machine, dishwasher, TV, DVD player etc) and beautifully decorated house in the picturesque village of Sassorosso. Stunning views over the valley from the bedrooms and terraces. A wood burning stove made for cosy evenings and a large selection of DVDs ensured our 11 year old was kept entertained. The village has a small bar. and there are two restaurants within 10 minutes walk serving authentic Tuscan recipes and both with very friendly hosts. A 10 minute drive to the local supermarket which stocks all essentials and a further 10 minutes to two larger supermarkets in Pieva Fosciana. The villa proved an ideal base for us to explore Garfagnana and further afield. Beautiful villages, walks and restaurants abound and the walled city of Lucca, where bikes can be hired is unmissable - live Puccini Arias are performed every evening between 7-8pm, stunning! Train from Lucca to Florence takes approximately 80 minutes, parking at the station is 1 Euro per hour up to a max of 10 Euros. The owners provide comprehensive guides and suggestions to the local attractions and driving directions - we found their appraisals spot on and were able to plan for the next day's adventures. The walled village of Castiglione is worth a visit and if you make your way to the war cemetery there are unparalleled views down to Castlenuovo which is the major town in the region. Market day is Thursday morning and this was much bigger than we expected - well worth a visit. Pony trekking, walks in the national parks and even skiing at Abetone (about an hour away)also make this a suitable destination for the more adventurous. In truth, we have barely scratched the surface of this region and its attractions and will definitely return. I honestly, can't recommend this villa highly enough, from initial enquiry, the owners made the whole experience simple and easy and it was a privilege to stay in their homely villa.
We spent ten action filled days in the beautiful Garfagnana Valley. Casa Limonella is everything it advertises - in a stunning location with beautiful mountain views and has everything one needs for a comfortable stay. Spotlessly clean, the house was well supplied for all our needs.
Two excellent restaurants and a bar for drinks and snacks were within easy walking distance (the bar needs better signposting, but was welcoming and definitely worth visiting).
Such a lot to enjoy every day - beautiful villages, good walking, exotic spring flowers. We particularly enjoyed seeking out places that used the old Garfagnana recipes - now have our own spelt(farro) recipe books.
We definitely hope to stay here again and bring more of our family to enjoy Casa Limonella and its surroundings, so thank you Gerry and family.
We loved it so much we all want to go back next year! Casa Limonella has everything you need - just bring yourself, your clothes and buy some food on the way - and you won't need to leave the house - everything is there for you. Stunning location too.
The coast is 1 hour 15 minutes drive over the "Marble Mountains" with amazing views of the coastline as you come through the mountains. Marina di Massa is the nearest resort, Viareggio and the stunning beauty of Lerici and Cinque Terre are also within reach for a days outing.
The nearest airport is Pisa, and flights with Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet2 are available all year round from several locations in the UK. Hire car is necessary and Sassorosso is 1 hour and 30 minutes drive. Full directions will be given on booking.
Castilgione di Garfagnana (walled medieval village)- 10 minutes. Castelnuovo di Garfagnana - nearest main town - 15 minutes. Barga - 35 minutes. Lucca - beautiful walled city, 45 minutes. Florence - 2 hours drive or 45 minutes to Lucca and 1 hour by train (we recommend this). Much more information on places to visit and things to do, on our website link and in the house.
A local outdoor swimming pool is available in Castelnuovo (15 minutes). August sees Garfagnanan villages host their own specific "Sagra's" (festivals), featuring their own gastronomic speciality, a great experience. Sassorosso, as well as surrounding local villages are a delight to explore, with a feeling of days gone by.
