Considered to be one of the most beautiful houses in Watamu, Jonjoloka (Gekko) House was built in 2008 and is in Watamu close to Mida Creek. It is also protected by WAC (Watamu Against Crime) patrols. You are a 7 minute stroll from one of the worlds most beautiful beaches on the Watamu Marine Reserve with coral reefs and 10 minutes from famous Mida Creek. Watamu village is 10 minutes away with banks and shops etc. Local transport (taxi or tuk tuk) is cheaply available if needed. Local restaurants, bars and hotels sell international and local cuisine overlooking the Indian Ocean. Tsavo game park is 2.5 hours away. Locally, game fishing, water sports, forest and nature walks, riding etc are available.
My wife and I live in the UK where I am a professional musician. We first visited Watamu 15 years ago and fell in love with the lovely atmosphere, amazing beaches, warm seas, water sports and safaris. We then visited usually twice a year for some years before buying land and, after much research, building our dream house which we very much consider to be our home when we are able to be there. We were helped in the design of the house and pool by a celebrated local artist and sculptor and we like to think that influence comes through in the warm, comfortable feel of the house whilst retaining strong African influence. The house is managed locally when we are not there so there is always someone on hand to deal with issues or problems though we welcome queries and observations.
Martin Holloway purchased this house in 2008
Watamu is a truly captivating place with a great atmosphere, friendly locals and spectacular palm fringed beaches and seas dotted with coral reefs. You may fish for Marlin and Sailfish, snorkel, dive, go dolphin watching, take a slow dhow trip up the creek or enjoy various water sports. If you prefer land based activity then riding, walks in the Skoke forest and the Gedi ruins are all close by and the Tsavo game park is just two and a half hours away. Local good quality hotels are open for beach side drinks and meals beside the Indian Ocean or you may prefer a local meal and drink in one of the local bars in the village. Though it retains a local feel, Watamu is easily accessed from Malindi or Mombasa airports which connect daily to Nairobi.
Jonjoloka House offers privacy in a beautiful environment whilst only being a few minutes drive from the village and a stroll away from the beaches. The staff will take care of all the cleaning, washing and clearing up whilst you enjoy your holiday.
The beach is a 7 minute walk from the house. It is a long, white sand, palm fringed beach stretching for miles with Coral reefs just offshore. Warm shallow waters leave long sandbanks to walk out to at low tide.
Boat trips go to the Coral Gardens. There are a wide choice of local restaurants and hotels nearer the village serving international and local dishes also 4 banks with ATMs and 2 supermarkets plus local dukas (shops) selling local produce and safaris.
Mombasa Airport to Watamu is 120km on a decent road and takes around 2 hours. Malindi airport currently has flights from Nairobi with 3 airlines and is about a 25 minutes drive from Watamu. A taxi from here should cost around £15-16.
Local car hire is available at around £15-20 per day. We can supply details if required.
Watamu Village is about 10 minutes by car or Tuk Tuk (around £2) or a 1 hour long steady walk along the beach. Other restaurants and hotels such as Pilipan, Ocean Sports, Turtle Bay and Hemmingways where diving, snorkeling, game fishing, kite surfing and paddleboarding etc can be arranged and meals and drinks purchased are on route.
Short Beach at the entrance to Mida Creek is a 15 minute stroll. Beautiful Dhow dinner and sundowner cruises are available
The owners have 20 years experience of Watamu and can advise you on most aspects and requirements.
