Why Maureen O'Donoghue chose Simat de la Valldigna
'Casa Maja', which means 'House Beautiful', instantly cast its spell over me from its position overlooking a valley bright and lush with orange groves to the mountains. This was the answer to my dreams of moving to Spain. Spain had bewitched me during holidays long before with its high spirited and generous people, always ready for fun and fiesta - like the Irish! - with its music and dance, its exotic landscapes and historic castles, its ancient monasteries and stunning modern architecture, with its blue skies and endless golden beaches, with all its colourful traditions. Peaceful and private, in 'Casa Maja' I had found the perfect place for a writer - and the perfect paradise for friends and guests to holiday.
What makes this Villa unique
Casa Maja is available as a vacation chalet from Easter to November and over Christmas and NY.. From here it is easy to spend days hiking, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, playing golf, or sight-seeing and the 50 kilometres of Costa Azahar beaches are within 20 minutes' drive. The house sleeps a total of six, provides air-conditioning, fans, satellite TV and wi-fi internet access. The large pool has a special shallow area for small children. The village of Pla de Corrals is just within walking distance and has two bars serving food. Historic Xativa is the nearest town with a magnificent castle, atmospheric old quarter, good restaurants and vibrant night life. At Casa Maja guests awake every morning to the unspoilt paradise of the real Spain.

Beautiful large quirky villa
Beautiful large quirky villa in the mountain with such a lovely owner who was friendly and helpful. Maureen lives on a separate plot of land at the end of the driveway so near enough for any problems.
The villa was 4 bedrooms although we only had access to 3 (as advertised) as the 4th was the owners office. Also there was a laundry room which was for the owners own use as well but we did have a washing machine and dishwasher in the main kitchen to use.
The unusual furniture was lovely and obviously held lots of memories and my husband loved the piano. The beds were very comfortable and the sheets and towels were changed during our stay which we have never had before in our ‘villa experiences’.
The views were brilliant as was the well maintained large swimming pool which was cleaned once in our stay.
The weather during our first week was pretty good for September and fairly hot but quite windy but I suppose that was being up in the mountains. Second week was quite stormy and misty and the temperature dropped but good WiFi and DVD’s to watch. Not much in walking distance. A couple of bars but they were about 25 minutes walk away and a steep climb back home. The nearest big supermarket was about 25 minutes drive away so had to stock up well each time. Hardly saw any neighbours as quite remote position.
Lots of mosquitoes which took a liking to us 😞 and lizards and flies but probably because we were in the mountains.
We had 24 hours with no mains water one day which was beyond the owners control but it wasn’t nice having a day with no shower, flushing the toilets with buckets from the swimming pool and not being able to wash up or use the washing machine. Homeaway were very good and said they would put us up in an alternative apartment for a couple of nights until it was sorted and we were packed ready to leave when the water luckily came back on. But it’s good to know there is the support there if required.
The villa does needs a spruce up and a good dust throughout, especially the cooker which had been left covered in grease from the previous tenants.
Garden not really useable as very overgrown and dog mess everywhere which was a shame as lovely views from there.
All in all we had a very restful secluded fortnight in a nice peaceful home.
Lovely peaceful retreat with great pool!
We had a very relaxing 2 weeks stay at Casa Maja. The property is in a very quiet area but only 15 minutes from the lovely town of Xativa and 30 minutes from the beach at Tavernes. The house has everything you might need and the pool was superb and very well utilised during our visit! Maureen was a wonderful host, respecting the privacy of guests but being on hand for advice and assistance if needed. All in all a great time was had by all.
It was a real pleasure getting to know your family and I'm so pleased you enjoyed your holiday in 'Casa Maja'. Thank you for your nice review. Have ahappy year.
Wonderful family vacation!
We absolutely loved the stay at the villa! The house is very nice, it seems that it’s full of memories: piano, jazz CDs... Could be more tidy, but you have there everything you might need, full kitchen equipment, salt, sugar, even various herbs, rice. The garden and the pool were absolutely lovely, kids adored swimming in the pool! We appreciated the privacy at the villa, wonderful views from the terrace, and also the assistance of Maureen whenever required. She is a wanderfull host, very wellcomming and caring. Thank you Maureen!
I am the one who must thank you for being such charming guests. It was a real pleasure meeting you all and knowing you loved my home and were happy here. Thank you for your kind comments
Fabulous house and hostess
Private and quiet
Very private and peaceful with beautiful views over the valley.
Nice, cheap ,little bar in the village for lunch.
Thank you. It was a pleasure having you all to stay.
Great views! Lovely Pool
Great pool and sun terrace. Garden a little untidy, so we didn't use it, also a little worried about the drop from the wall to the pool from the garden, although Maureen did warn us about this when she gave us the tour. Access to the garden is restricted, so it was no problem to keep the children away.
It was a pleasure meeting you all and thank you for the review. It is true that, with the temperature being around 40 degrees for the past month, the garden has not been maintained in pristine condition. Spanish gardeners are neither mad dogs, nor Englishmen and so do not go out in the midday sun. The garden is indeed fenced for safety, but directly accessible from a house door and not 'restricted' in any way. But I'm glad you enjoyed the pool and terrace.
