About Jean Taylor

My husband and I moved here from London in the summer of 2008 having planned our early retirement for many years and we have not been disappointed. We wanted an old house in a rural location with enough grounds to build a holiday cottage, grow our own organic vegetables, have a few chickens and a small fishing lake. We wanted plenty of "projects" and we certainly have that. We worried about settling in to village life and if we would be accepted, but we needn't have worried. We joined in local activities, youd be surprised what goes on in villages and were welcomed very warmly. Our heating/cooker packed up christmas eve and some locals turned up with wood, chain saw and coal and told us it was a "Christmas Present" how is that for kindness, thats what life is about. We live the good life.

Jean Taylor purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Jean Taylor chose Thrandeston

We wanted a rural location to watch wild life and grow our own veg, also where I could do my walking and my husband golf which we love. As soon as we read about the village on-line we fell in love with it before coming here. It was like going back in time. The village pond, old church and village hall with the cute cottages around it. Even the first person I had to phone was so friendly. There are so many walks on the doorstep, horseriders going by, cyclists and even the ocassional motorist, and when walking the dog you get to know them all. We sell our free range eggs at verge and there are lots of other wares to buy. It is away from the maddening crowds, and after city life it is such a welcome contrast. Having Diss Railway Station means easy access directly to London and Norwich.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy walks with the dog on our doorstep. Also we can walk to the local pub and go regularly for meals. We are convenient for Diss Town only 10 mins in car for all our groceries and theatre/shows/restaurants, and only 15 mins by train to Norwich and 1.1/2 hours to London.

The roads are great and if need be can drive to London in under 2 hours, unusual to have long traffic jams.

We offer 4.1/2 acres of grounds to walk around, chickens, ducks and their babies in summer to see, organic vegetable when in season, and pick your own fruit from our peach, apple, damson, goosberry, redberries etc trees. We have free range eggs, and home baked bread, maybe this year Ill make cider. There are 2 games rooms with table tennis, snooker, darts and golf clubs for 5 hole chipping green.

Guestbook comments from the manager

We have had excellent reviews from Charlie in Kent - delightfully equipped, converted stables has something for everyone. Lakeview is a special place to stay.

Monst in London - Fab holiday, just come back and we cant rave about it enough. Cottage new and beautifully maintained. Jean and Brian amazingly hospitable and helpful but very respectful. Our boys enjoyed immensely.

Jordi in Barcelona - We recommend this lodge, the perfect place to stay for lovely holidays. The lodge is fantastic for children and adults.

Paul & Chris North Yorkshire - Lovely detached cottage in a peaceful location with large garden, and first class accommodation including en-suite shower room. Ideal base for exploring the area with walks from door into local villages. Superbly equipped, dog friendly. Jean and Brian perfect hosts very welcoming and every detail was thought of to ensure a perfect holiday. Would highly recommend this property to friends and family to explore or just stay on site.

A Truly Fantastic Property

  • 5 of 5

This place is fantastic! From the neatly trimmed lawns to the wild bullrushes at the side of the lake. There is lots of wildlife around and the scenery is relaxing and peaceful. The fenced garden is ideal for dog owners and there is an enormous amount of activities for youngsters from table football to golf, table tennis to darts, fishing to playing pool. This place has got the lot, and the cottage has been built to a pretty high specification too. We adored it here and would return just to have more of Jean's quiche!

Amazing.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful location. Great hosts, the cottage was immaculate and we had a few treats waiting for us, home made bread and eggs from the chickens that run free on the farm.

Great place for couples and families, table tennis, mini golf and fishing all on the farm.

I highly recommend, I'm so glad I made the booking to stay at Kiln Farm. Looking forward to my next return.

Thank you Jean and Brian.

Quiet, perfectly maintained cottage in a delightful part of the country.

  • 5 of 5

The landscape and villages nearby are lovely. The churches at Thrandeston, Roydon, Eye and (of course) Bury were new discoveries for us. We were absorbed by the distinctive ecology of the fens at Roydon, Redgrave & Lopham and Minsmere. We heard a bittern booming and saw marsh harriers. Altogether a most enjoyable holiday. The cottage itself is ideally situated for walking, and from the window we could glimpse moorhens feeding their five newly hatched chicks.
