|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
The Keeping Cottage sleeps 2 with room for a or baby in a cot. It has a sitting room with lovely country views, one bedroom with a 5ft French sleigh bed, contemporary shower room and modern well equipped kitchen. The cottage has a tiny outside area with table and two chairs.
The Keeping Place nestles in a quiet hamlet close to the renowned resort of Salcombe. The style of the house is French country and it boasts a wealth of character including ancient oak beams and flagstone floors. The layout of the house works extremely well for either one or two families sharing. There are two master bedrooms with en-suites, and two further bedrooms sharing a shower room. The house is walking distance to a lovely safe, sandy beach with fabulous beach cafe. The property is well equipped and is very much a home from home, giving it a lovely atmosphere. The walled garden is safe for children. The Keeping Cottage sleeps 2 adults + child. The house and cottage, although one property, are separate and do not overlook each other, giving privacy to both. It is possible to rent the two, if the extra space is required, perhaps for Grandparents, a nanny or friends. The Keeping Cottage can be rented at any time of year and we are flexible on length of stay during low season.
We are a family of four who have been living between the West country and France for 15 years, hence the French feel to the house! We have been renting our homes for 20 years and are therefore very experienced in providing what our clients wish for, ensuring they have a lovely relaxing holiday. We have renovated our properties over the years and this year our French home will also be available to rent. Our aim is to ensure that we offer a truly personal service, and have in fact made many friends over the years wiIth guests who have come to stay in one of our properties. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to share our home and know that our guests have enjoyed it as much as we do.
Annabel Levey purchased this cottage in 2004
We bought the house because the location is perfect - close enough to Salcombe to be able to join in all that goes on there during the summer, but far enough away to find peace and quiet. We also love to walk our Norwich terrier across the fields and many footpaths in the area. There are stunning clifftop and coastal walks which can be accessed by foot from the house.
At the time of booking, we require a 50% deposit with the balance due 8 weeks prior to arrival. A £250 security deposit is also required for The Keeping Place, £100 deposit for The Keeping Cottage and £50 for The Keeping Corner. This is returned to you within 7 days of your departure.
Changeover day is Friday, except at certain times of year such as Christmas and short breaks when we try to fit in with our guest's requirement. Please call for further information.
The Keeping Cottage is a snug, well equipped base for exploring this part of Devon. Located only a mile inland from the coastal path, with Thurlestone Sands, and the nature reserve behind the dunes, in one direction and Hope Cove in the other. There are no end of footpaths crossing the local dairy farms and linking with the coastal path so there is never a need to retrace your footsteps. Plenty of scope for circular routes. One day we walked along the coastal path to South Sands and took the ferry into Salcombe. Another day we walked to the great expanse of Bantham sands. Plenty of eateries to walk to too! Enjoyed sampling the local sea food in particular.
One or two things that might have enhanced our stay are:
A radio (my husband was suffering withdrawal from radio 4!)
A visitor book - I find reading previous recommendations very useful when I visit an area new to me.
Some milk on arrival. I guess I've come to expect this when we stay in cottages and it struck me as particularly ironic as we were adjacent to a dairy farm!
Some of the cutlery was a bit grimmey, and that whole drawer could benefit from a spring clean.
I found it difficult to read in the sitting room after dark with the lighting.
Gosh, it looks as if I am criticising. I'm not, we had a lovely time and I guess I'm jotting down things I've remembered which I hope you will find useful.
Things I particularly enjoyed are:
Having to wait for the entire herd of dairy cows to cross the road after milking - this would not happen in Surrey, and I loved it!
I loved the sounds of the countryside as soon as you opened the stable door each morning.
I loved the early morning light, particularly down on the beach, when I had it to myself.
All in all, I would certainly recommend The Keeping Cottage as a place to stay. It's location is brilliant, and it provides a comfortable base for a holiday.
Lovely property, beautifully furnished and equipped and an oh so comfortable bed! Restful and so quiet at night- and fantastic for star gazing. Not too far from several lovely beaches (South Milton, Hope Cove, Torcross) some good walks and pretty towns (Salcombe, Dartmouth).
The perfect retreat , a beautiful cottage with a French influence in walking distance to an unspoilt beach .
Nearby to popular Salcombe but set in the countryside so nice and quiet , we would return here again but bring our family and book the keeping place which is next door .
Our week at The Keeping Cottage was all we wanted it to be. We desperately needed to recharge our batteries & have a break away from our all consuming busy lives. Annabel was very welcoming & accommodating, without being intrusive. The cottage had all the facilities we required & was cozy & comfortable. Although an annex to the owner's house, with a right of way alongside to other properties, our tranquility was not intruded upon. Being only a mile from some beautiful coastal walks was the icing on the cake. Even on a blustery autumn evening, it was fun to watch the die hard surfers off Thurlestone Sands. We had a lovely week, that ticked all the boxes. Thank you :)
There is a beautiful beach exactly one mile from the property, which is an easy reasonably level walk. It is also possible to park at the beach. The beach is safe and sandy, with fabulous rock pools at low tide. There is a cafe at the beach which does delicious food, and in the evening you can take your own wine and enjoy the lovely seafood they serve, along with other dishes, and then walk back to the house. It really is a glorious beach the sunsets are spectacular!
