The Keeping Place nestles in a quiet hamlet close to the renowned resort of Salcombe. The style of the house is French country and it boasts a wealth of character including ancient oak beams and flagstone floors. The layout of the house works extremely well for either one or two families sharing. There are two master bedrooms with en-suites, and two further bedrooms sharing a shower room. The house is walking distance to a lovely safe, sandy beach with fabulous beach cafe. The property is well equipped and is very much a home from home, giving it a lovely atmosphere. The walled garden is safe for children. The Keeping Cottage sleeps 2 adults + child. The house and cottage, although one property, are separate and do not overlook each other, giving privacy to both. It is possible to rent the two, if the extra space is required, perhaps for Grandparents, a nanny or friends. The Keeping Cottage can be rented at any time of year and we are flexible on length of stay during low season.
We are a family of four who have been living between the West country and France for 15 years, hence the French feel to the house! We have been renting our homes for 20 years and are therefore very experienced in providing what our clients wish for, ensuring they have a lovely relaxing holiday. We have renovated our properties over the years and this year our French home will also be available to rent. Our aim is to ensure that we offer a truly personal service, and have in fact made many friends over the years wiIth guests who have come to stay in one of our properties. Nothing gives us more pleasure than to share our home and know that our guests have enjoyed it as much as we do.
Annabel Levey purchased this house in 2004
We bought the house because the location is perfect - close enough to Salcombe to be able to join in all that goes on there during the summer, but far enough away to find peace and quiet. We also love to walk our Norwich terrier across the fields and many footpaths in the area. There are stunning clifftop and coastal walks which can be accessed by foot from the house.
At the time of booking, we require a 50% deposit with the balance due 8 weeks prior to arrival. A £300 security deposit is also required for The Keeping Place, £100 deposit for The Keeping Cottage and £50 for The Keeping Corner. This is returned to you within 7 days of your departure.
Changeover day is Friday, except at certain times of year such as Christmas and short breaks when we try to fit in with our guest's requirement. Please call for further information.
We are a family of four with two older children (18 and 20) and with their friends and our dog we stayed in the Cottage for a week. The location was perfect. A short drive to the local Coop at Marlborough or to Kingsbridge for greater variety of shops and a ten minute drive to Salcombe so all easily accessible whilst enjoying the peace of the countryside at the cottage. We barbequed and cooked on the Aga as well as sampled the pub food at Torcross and Thurlestone (very good), at South Sands hotel (for a special occasion and it was very good) at the Crab Shell (ok) and the Beach Café on Thurlestone Sands (overpriced and overrated in our opinion). The Aga was excellent for drying our beach wear. The kitchen was well equipped. The stone cottage has the charm of being old but tastefully modernised with plenty of light and is very practical and nicely decorated. The bedrooms are all very comfortable and spread out and the 2 shower rooms and the bathroom were clean with good sized showers. The master bedroom has a wonderful view over the field opposite. One of the boys said that he had the best sleep he has had for many months because his bed was so comfortable and it was so quiet.
We made good use of the tennis courts at Thurlestone Golf Club £6 per person for 1 1/2 hours and also Thurlestone Golf Club and Bigbury Golf Club (£19 pp after 4pm so great for the teenagers although it was about 1/2 hour drive).
We would definitely return and would also recommend the cottage to our friends.
The property is extremely comfortable and full of character. It's great for a large family with plenty of space with an amazing dining area. Unfortunately the weather was awful for our stay but this house saved the week, it was a great fall back option. The owner is brilliant, excellent communication and very nice lady. Highly recommended.
Our family of 6 adults and one infant stayed here to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. It was ideal. A 15 minute walk or 3 minute drive to Thurlestone beach from where Hope Cove is just a short walk and Bolt Tail and Head, Salcombe and Bigbury also accessible to keen coastal walkers. The property was exactly as described. Furnished in a rustic French manner reflecting the owners origins it was well equipped and smart whilst maintaining a lived in and well used feel that put us at ease. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all excellent, the dining hall great for celebratory dinners and the sitting room had enough sofas for us all to lounge around in comfort. Even in early April the garden was a sun trap with a large table for al fresco eating. The location is peaceful and rural. We would happily go back again
We stayed here with some friends for New years eve! we had a lovely time and the house is so pretty and comfortable. The Kids had an amazing time and the beach just down the road is lovely. Everything was perfect!
We had a great weekend at The Keeping Place. The house has so much character is lovely and spacious and in a great location, close to a gorgeous little beach which was not overrun with tourists. The Beach Cafe served fantastic food. Highly recommended property.
There is a beautiful beach exactly one mile from the property, which is an easy reasonably level walk. It is also possible to park at the beach. The beach is safe and sandy, with fabulous rock pools at low tide. There is a cafe at the beach which does delicious food, and in the evening you can take your own wine and enjoy the lovely seafood they serve, along with other dishes, and then walk back to the house. It really is a glorious beach the sunsets are spectacular!
