18th century stone and granite farmhouse at the end of long private lane. Set in its own 4 acre plot of mainly pasture land. Located in a completely private rural location it is within easy reach of all amenities,(7kms from Sees). The house is spacious and although it has only three bedrooms it has the capacity to sleep at least ten by using a large mezzanine area. The house, although fully restored is furnished with antiques throughout. There are two bathrooms in the main house plus an extra shower in the gym and sauna building, adjourning the swimming pool. There is a good sized living room and separate dining room with antique table and chairs to seat 10. The kitchen is well equipped and has its own original bread oven. With its oil fired central heating, as well as a large open fireplace in the dining room La Guelandiere is an ideal place to spend cosy autumn or winter holidays.

About Caroline Hawley
My name is Caroline Hawley, I am married to John, have two grown up sons and a black Labrador! We run an antiques auction business from our home in Yorkshire and I am a BBC antiques expert on Bargain Hunt, Flog It etc.. Since I saw and fell in love with La Guelandiere I have spent the last seven years restoring the farmhouse. This has been both great fun and a great challenge!! There was no electricity, water or glass in many of the windows, guests will be pleased to know that we now have all three in abundance and lots more besides! John and I have spent quite a lot of time in France over the last few years but the demands of the business mean that we need to spend more time in England therefore we have decided to rent out the house. My family, friends and I adore spending time here and I am sure that you will too.

We especially love this area for its temperate climate, plentiful rivers and forests, abundant wildlife and delicious regional produce. The area is easily accessible from England. There is a quality of life which we seem to have lost in England. Life seems to move at a slower pace, allowing people to have time for each other.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
The farmhouse is set in splendid isolation in its own 4 acre, grounds, however a 7km drive will take you to Sees, cathedral town which offers everything you would require. In Sees there are shops, restaurants, banks, cafes and small cinema. The inland lake/beach of Le Mele is easy to find and good fun. A 12 minute drive can take you to the historic lace making city of Alencon, where tourist activities can be found, 40 minutes away is the famous 24 hr motor racing city of Le Mans. Paris can be reached within 2 hours. From this base you can enjoy great days out but also great days in! Should you not wish to venture far this rural retreat offers everything you would wish for a relaxing break, heated swimming pool, sauna, gym, huge open fireplace and plentiful supply of logs!

Wonderfully Peacful Property
Our stay offered us time to relax in a lovely peaceful setting. The outdoor space offered all we needed to relax with plenty of seating to follow the sunshine with the bonus of the pool, well equipped gym and sauna. The BBQ was great for al frecso cooking and dining, eating and drinking at the lovely large patio table surrounded by grape vines.
Sees was very close, providing all we needed from local supermarkets and a great bakery for our morning croissant whilst taking in the calm surroundings.
As a bonus we were lucky enough to watch deer graze in both the morning and evening. The one problem we had with the pool was dealt with very quickly by Paula the local contact with no impact on our enjoyment whatsoever.

Relaxing hideaway with great pool and facilities.
We spent a very enjoyable 10 days with old friends from the USA, at this well equipped property. The generous interior space and a number of terraces made for a variety of environments to spend time in as the sun moved over each day.
The heated pool was a big hit. As it was very hot we made little use of the gym and sauna which would have been a good alternative for cooler or rainy weather.
Outings to Sees and Alencon were good and we also explored other towns and restaurants in the area.
Caroline responded promptly to all our enquiries during the booking process and the local house manager Paula was on call for any issues during our stay.

Lovely building let down greatly by the housekeeping
We stayed for a week in June and enjoyed getting out and about in the area; luckily, the weather was pretty good overall.
The building itself is very nice but when we were there it was not clean......amongst other things, the shower was absolutely filthy, the French doors were barely transparent, the floors were grimy underfoot and there was a big pile of filled dog waste bags on the window ledge which we had to dispose of! We had high hopes and were very dismayed with the cleanliness of the property throughout. I sent the owner some photographs and the owner has apologised and said there's not been a problem before.
The gardens are large and there is plenty of space, with a large seating area outside the kitchen. The pool is great. If you have a dog, be sure to use a tick treatment as ours picked a couple up........the spot on did the job.
Unfortunately, due to the housekeeping, we would not want to return to this property.
A wonderful retreat
We have stayed in several properties in the local area, while visiting family and this is far the best. The property is very spacious and well equipped, we all like to cook, so rarely eat out and there was everything we needed, particularly loved the pots of fresh herbs on the patio near the kitchen door. The bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable beds with nice linen. Everywhere was clean and the house was a pleasure to be in. The grounds are lovely and although not warm enough to sit out, we enjoyed he privacy and freedom. Our young labrador was in his element, We would certainly recommend this property, you will not be disappointed. Hope to return very soon.

Ouistreham is the nearest coastal resort, with sandy beaches, at 98 kms from the house. The sophisticated coastal towns of Deauville(114km), Trouville(114km) and the picturesque port of Honfleur (125km) all with designer boutiques, galleries and seafood restaurants, make for splendid days out.
The Brittany ferry service from Portsmouth to Caen,98kms ,just over an hours drive from the house is very efficient and runs up to 3 ferries a day including an express service in the summer months (just over 3.5 hours) (Discounts available through the owners). Calais(359km), 3.5 to 4 hour drive. Boulogne(327km) and Le Havre(156km) are other ports that can be used. The use of a car is essential. We nearly always use the eurotunnel to Calais. The most convenient airport is Paris, Orly, car hire is essential.
Sees (7kms) is the nearest town to the house. Le Mans (71.5km), the home of the famous car racing circuit. Falaise (47km), has the William the Conquerer museum. Alencon (16.2km), is an historic lace making town. Paris(188km), there is a train from Surdon, (less than a 15 minute drive) which gets to Paris in 1.5 hours. Giverny and Monet's garden (154km), Haras du Pin, the national stud (25.1km), Bagnoles de L'orne, a smart spa town (25.1km), Normandy beaches, Rouen(146km).
Sees has everything guests would require, shops, banks, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. During the summer months there is a spectacular sound and light show in the cathedral and a free open air musical concert by the river on Sunday evenings in the summer.
There is a riding stables 5 minutes drive from the house, Ferme les Tertes, where guests can go on anything from a 1 hour ride to a much longer hack.
Tennis is a 5 minute drive away at St.Gervais du Peron.
Alencon has canoeing, iceskating and an indoor and open air swimming pool. There are regular trotting events at the racecourse.
Rouen is a medieval city which inspired many of the impressionist painters and is where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.
There are several swimming lakes within 20 to 40 minutes drive. Le Mele sur Sarthe has mini golf, pedalo hire. Suille-le-Guillaume has childrens' play area, boats etc. Souligny-la-Trappe has waterslide and pedalos.
At St. Leonard des Bois, in the beautiful Alpes Mancelles region there is Arbres et Adventures where kids and adults can enjoy climbing and swinging through the trees in a specially designed assault course.
Giverny, home of Monet's garden is a delight and around 2 hours drive from the house.
Guests can have a day in Paris, taking the train from Surdon, (15 minutes drive) arriving in Paris 1.5 hours later. We often take the 7.30 and return on the last train, around 10pm at Surdon.
At Lisieux, approximately 1.5 hours drive, there is a zoological park with a small train which takes people around the site to get close to the animals, included in the price of the entry ticket.
There are many walks and cycle tracks within a very short distance of the house.
St. Pierre sur Dives, less than an hours drive, has a fabulous weekly farmers market,every Monday and an antique fair the first Sunday of every month. Haras du Pin puts on spectacular horse and rider shows every Thursday afternoon during the summer.

Booking Notes: Please contact John or Caroline direct by e mail or telephone to make a booking. A deposit of £200 per week is required to confirm. The balance is due 8 weeks before arrival, together with a security deposit of £200, which will be returned to you within 7 days of your departure. Changeover Day: Saturday is the preferred changeover day. Guests are required to vacate the property by 10am and arriving guests can occupy from 4pm onwards.
