La Regalade is situated in the heart of the Var,France's most heavily forested area at the centre of the wine-growing region. Set in oak and pine woods it is a lovely stone-clad villa on a steeply terraced hillside and is reached by a path and steps from the exclusive parking area above, with uninterrupted views over the Lac de Carces below. The accommodation is all on one level with the bedrooms looking out onto a tree-shaded area on one side and the living room out onto the free-form pool on the other. The living area is comfortably furnished with armchairs and a sofa-bed. It's a perfect spot to relax in and enjoy a pristine, tranquil country environment and yet only minutes away from bustling Provencal market towns and villages. Ideally situated for the sandy beaches of Hyeres and St. Tropez to the south and the spectacular gorges of the Verdon Canyon to the north the villa is also well-placed for trips to Aix-en-Provence, Nice, Cannes and Antibes only an hour by car.

About Jeremy Frankel

My wife and I live in France after a lifetime of working in developing countries in Africa and the Middle East. We are now retired and enjoying the very relaxed lifestyle, pristine environment and wonderful climate of this part of Provence. On top of that the French health service is probably one of the best in the world so we are well looked after.

Why Jeremy Frankel chose Brignoles region

We worked here in the 1980s, and even after we left in the 90s our kids continued their education here in a French Lycee with an international section. We all speak French fluently and it seemed logical that this would be a good place to put down some new roots when it came to retirement. So we bought our house in 2001. It has been a good investment.

What makes this villa unique

Our villa in Carces is in a walkers' paradise. You can walk outside the front door onto well-marked forest trails to Carces or along the lake and down the river. Up the hill to the top takes only 15 minutes or so (on foot) for marvelous panoramic views of the hills and mountain ranges all round us. Bikes (mountain and road) can be rented in Carces. Horses are available by the hour or day from the numerous horse ranches nearby. Canoeists can have a great time on the River Argens where canoe trips can be arranged from Carces downriver over rapids to Le Thoronet.

Very beautiful secluded location surrounded by trees with amazing views. Lovely clean spacious villa with all mod cons you could wish for, it felt very homely. Lovely personal touches by the owners. We loved sitting by the pool and just taking in the view but also loved the pretty little garden round the back of the property, very private. There are lots of local villages nearby to visit with markets, etc. and we liked the restaurant down by the lake. There is plenty of information provided in the villa about sightseeing, walking, activities etc.. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely stay here again. We are a family of 6 (2 adults two young children 2 teenagers.) Jane Neal 2011

An excellent place to stay

La Régalade is an ideal venue for a relaxing holiday. Jeremy and Jo are amazingly helpful owners, as we can attest from having taken regular holidays at the villa over the last 8 years. In the summer it is an ideal place to chill out: with a supermarket and the village a ten-minute drive away, there is no need to waste time shopping, and it is a positive delight to spend the day relaxing on the patio. This year, for the first time, we went at Easter and loved the wood-burner to protect us against the Mistral in the evenings. The satellite television is a boost, and we found the wi-fi very quick on iPads. The house has always been well maintained, and they constantly look to make improvements; the kitchen is very well furbished with white goods and there is more than enough crockery, pans, cooking equipment etc to make one’s stay very easy; and Jeremy comes to maintain the pool every week. Put simply, this is a place in which to relax from the moment that the cases are unpacked, and one is never disturbed by noise from anywhere. We have come to be very, very fond of La Régalade and shall be certainly be returning in 2016, probably for a three-week holiday.

Fantastic location.

La Regalade is situated in a beautiful woodland location with glorious views of the lake and the surrounding hills. If you enjoy peace and quiet then this is the place for you. The accommodation is comfortable and homely with everything required for a self catering holiday. If you don't want to cook there are many good restaurants in Carces which is a 10 minute journey if you follow Jeremy's shortcut through the woods. If you want to visit the Cote D'azur hotspots they are all within reach, however make sure you visit the fantastic villages that dot the Provence countryside. The Verdon gorge is also a must but remember to take your swimming costume for a dip in the blue waters of the lake. We will definitely be back to Provence in the future as there is too much to explore for a fortnight.

A relaxing break

We spent one week in August 2014 and really enjoyed our stay at la Regalade. The villa is situated in a very quiet and peaceful location and is perfect for relaxation. It is well equipped with everything one can need and has beautiful views over the lake. There are plenty of activities and visits in the area. From initial booking until the end of the stay, Jeremy the owner was very helpful.

We recommend la Regalade for a relaxing stay in peaceful surroundings.

Great Holiday

It is a bit of a bumpy ride on the forest track to the villa, past vineyards and forest, but all part of the experience and so excited to finally arrive! The location is peaceful with lovely views of the lake and a secluded garden with private pool. We found it an ideal base to explore the stunning and beautiful Verdon Gorge with day trips to Aix-en Provence, Arles and surrounding towns and villages.

On some mornings we would have a swim in the pool, followed by a relaxing walk along the lake to the nearby town of Carces for breakfast and market shopping and return to the villa via the forests trail, a great way to start the day.

The property is well equipped and the owners very helpful. There is a supermarket about 10 mins drive for all your weekly provisions. The BBQ was a great plus for cooking outside in the evening. We bought fish from the market and cooked on the BBQ in the evening, so relaxing. If we wanted to eat out in the evening there was plenty of great places to choose from in the surrounding towns.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday.This is an ideal location. You can have peace and quiet when you choose to, exploring the forest trails and local vineyards, or you can jump in the car and go and explore the stunning scenery, towns and villages. We are looking to return as we want to explore more of the area. Beautiful.

Location location location

When booking this property you must be aware that the location is remote as its in the middle of a forest and have a 8 mile drive on a mix of dirt and tarmac road followed by a steep set of steps and overgrown path to negotiate so you need to be relatively fit especially when carrying your luggage up and down, there is no lighting on the road or path/steps so night time is not for the faint hearted. Also being in a forested area you will encounter insects (e.g millipedes who like swimming pools) and animals of all kinds in and out of the property but this also comes with its location.

The property its self has all modern appliances even WiFi which works well and is furnished adequately but not luxury.

The owners themselves are very nice friendly people and were very helpful.

So to summarise if you love the great outdoors and are quite active this is for you!!

Owner's Response: This year the millipedes were like never before. Needless to say not just our villa, but everywhere. We don’t claim to be “luxury”, the prices reflect that, but it is stylish and comfortable – just as the photographs depict. As for location, the website describes it as being in the countryside in a pine and oak forest with lovely views over the lake, and so it is. Ideal location to chill out and relax.

Coast/Beach:

Lac de St. Croix 70kms (1 hour). This pristine, turquoise lake is part of the Verdon river complex with magnificent Gorges du Verdon a must to visit. Frejus, Hyeres, St. Tropez, St Maxime, 60kms (1 hour). We know some lovely comparatively peaceful beaches which are more secluded all around the same distance and time.

Travel:

Toulon airport 70kms around 45 minutes. Nice and Marseille airports both around 100kms around 75 minutes. A car is essential and can be hired at all airports as well as being available locally. Nearest mainline station for TGV is LesArcs/Draguignan about half an hour. Toulon Port for Ferry service to Corsica 1 hour, as well as from Hyeres to Porquerolles, Cassis and the Calanques also 1 hour.

Distances:

Nearest Village is Carces, 10 minutes by car with all the basics (5kms). Brignoles a much larger town with supermarkets and amenities and a twice weekly market is 20 minutes away.

Aix-en-Provence 90kms, Nice 115kms, Cannes 100kms. Monte Carlo 125kms. 11th century Cistercian Abbey of Le Thoronet is just 12kms away and well worth a visit for its amazing acoustics and austere architecture.

Further Details:

Every day is market day in one of the surrounding villages of Lorgues, Cotignac, Salernes and Aups, to name but a few, where a myriad of French cheeses, salamis and hams, fruit/veg and local ready-made dishes and specialities are temptingly displayed along with traditional arts and crafts. All within 20 minutes or so by car. Nearest supermarket, shops restaurants and bars are in Carces 10 minutes. A list of restaurants we have found to be of good quality with reasonable prices is available in the villa. Comments on places you have visited are both welcome and appreciated. Climbers will love the excellent graded pitches in Vallon Sourn and the Verdon Gorges are a hikers' and climbers' paradise only 1 hour to the north along with sailing, swimming and canoeing in the crystal clear waters of the Lac de St. Croix nearby. Golfers are spoiled for choice starting with Barbaroux just 15 minutes away. For the less sporty there are the wall-to-wall vineyards and olive groves with the wonderful fresh wines of the region to taste at the village coperatives as well as at the more up-market but equally welcoming 'domaines' and 'chateaux'. Culture vultures will not come amiss with summer concerts abounding including some at the 11th century Cistercian Abbey of Le Thoronet, jazz at the Chateau de Berne and classical music at churches and open-air venues throughout the area. There are a few useful books and local maps in the villa plus some fiction and games as well as brochures with local information. A visit to the tourist office in Carces is recommended for up-to-date information.
