About the property

Newly refurbished apartment with stunning views of the Sea, lake and Start point lighthouse.

Currently being refurbished and will be ready for May 2017.

Available for weekly booking during school holidays or B&B.

The apartment has an open plan kitchen, living and dining area and large patio doors leading out from this area onto the balcony.

The apartment is a comfortable and spacious, it incorporates a large balcony taking advantage of an uninterrupted 180 degree view, you can see to the West Start Point Lighthouse and to the east, the mouth of the river Dart. The apartment is situated in Torcross which built at the end of the famous Slapton Line, the line is a strip of land surrounded by water. Slapton Ley (lake) runs along one side with the sea and a 4 mile beach on the other. Slapton Ley is the largest fresh water lake in the South West of England.

Every window in the apartment offers spectacular views of either the sea or the Lake. Slapton Ley is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and was declared a National Nature Reserve (NNR) in 1993. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty and is popular for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Slapton sands is steeped in history following the D Day Landings during WW2, the beach was used to practice landing as it is similar to the beaches in France where the actual landings took place.

The apartment is situated above a cafe called The Torcross Boathouse. The cafes hours are 10-4 in the winter and 10-9pm in the summer months.

Torcross is conveniently situated between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth. Torcross is a village nestled at the end of Slapton sands a 3 mile long pebble beach which is dog friendly all year round. Twenty five minutes away is East Portlemouth which is the closest for sandcastle beaches and dogs are allowed here too. Across on the foot ferry from East Portlemouth is Salcombe which comes alive in the summer. All within a 30 min drive are three bustling towns. Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes which are full of quaint streets, interesting shopping, excellent restaurants and inns, and a variety of boat trips and water activities. Over the water to Kingswear the south Devon railway can take you along the coast by steam. A little further afield and you can explore Dartmoor national park, fish the river dart, horse ride or have a round of Golf.

We had a fantastic time here, coming with our 3 boys between Christmas and the New Year. The house has plenty of space, and has a large kitchen area and a separate living room with TV etc, which is great on rainy days or when people need space. Another couple with a kid came for a few days and it was not crowded at all. You could easily come here with grandparents etc. The house is in a beautiful spot, with sea views, and wonderful unspoilt coastline all around. I imagine it must be fantastic with good Summer weather. We got lucky with some of the weather, and even had a proper day at the beach in late December. It's a special part of the country and as well as great walks there is lots of good sea food to be had if, like us, you like the fruits of the sea. As to the hosts, we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome - a freshly baked and delicious chocolate cake awaited us on arrival, which was a really wonderful touch. Both the owners are really nice, and Katy was extremely responsive and gave us loads of local tips, all of which were winners. She went the extra mile and even arranged a charming babysitter / child minder to enable us to feel like we had a true break.

lovely cottage

Stayed here for a lovely two weeks, two families of four, there was plenty of room kitchen was well equipt except the tin opener didn't work so if your taking cans make sure they have a ring pull 😉 and a big pan would have come in really handy. Kids loved the range of dvds and the piano in the living area was a lovely surprise. Beds were Comfortable and there is plenty of storage space. Only down side we found was parking being two families we had two large cars....wouldn't exactly call it parking more space on the side of the road, however we had am amazing two weeks and would return to close bye....The locals were friendly and the kings arms serves lovely food, the start bay Inn also serve lovely food but is a bit more like a cafe than a pub....The Queens arms was absolutely lovely too

Lovely house in a lovely location

This is a lovely, warm spacious house in an unspoiled area of countryside right by the sea.

We were 2 families and a single adult, there was plenty of room for all of us and everything was spotlessly clean. The communal areas were large and it was nice to have the TV area completely separate from the kitchen/ diner. The dining table is huge which was great.

The house is very well appointed with a dishwasher, a washing machine and a full size freezer. Having 2 fridges was really useful. There were also some really lovely touches such as toilet paper, tea and milk and wine being there for our arrival. The stereo system, DVD player and the DVDs were all great for entertaining the children.

We were there during some really stormy weather, but the house stayed very warm. It has good sized enclosed gardens but unfortunately we didn't get to spend much time in those - they were great for the dog though.

The sea is a short walk away down a very steep path so not recommended for young children, however you can also get to a small beech car park in under a mile by car. Blackpool Sands with its lovely beech and beech side cafe is about 2 miles away.]

If I were being ultra picky I think the house could do with a large pan for cooking (there are frying pans and smaller pans) and a tin opener that works properly.

We really enjoyed our time in Close Bye and are very likely to visit again. We would highly recommend it.

Slapton Sands


Slapton Sands is a shingle beach 3 miles long. Dogs allowed all year. A spit of land separates the beach from a fresh water lake which a nature reserve and very popular with bird watchers and nature ramblers.

Blackpool Sands is a fine shingle beach with a natural pool safe for children to paddle and play in. There is a beach cafe on the beach. 10 minute drive from house. East Portlemouth beaches are 35min drive. Sand castle sand. Dogs allowed.


A car is essential for staying in this area.


Totnes 30mins. Kingsbridge 20 mins. Dartmouth 15 mins. Salcombe 40 mins.

Torquay 45 mins. Plymouth 50 mins. Exeter 1.5 hrs.

Further Details:

In the village there is are 3 places to eat and a village stores/gift shop. 20 minutes away in the Dartmouth direction is Blackpool sands which doesn't allow dogs all year but is a lovely beach with a very good takeaway and restaurant. 20 mins in the other direction is Kingsbridge where you can find supermarkets and lovely shops.

In Dartmouth there are many places to eat. For Poshnosh eat at the Sea Horse, try the Dolphin for pub grub or if you want a great atmosphere and a yummy breakfast go to cafe alfresco.
