About Di Collingswood

Hi, I'm Di Collingswood, I've lived & worked here at Capri in Dartmouth for 10 years with my architect husband Nigel and cocker spaniel, Bella. We work from a studio here at Capri. Dartmouth has a unique charm, a magnetic appeal; when I am away from here I cant wait to return.

Apartment Avanti was designed to be incorporated within our house but have its own separate entrance, patio & self catering facilities. The improvements here have taken 2 years and I hope you will be suitably wowed! You are assured of a peaceful and relaxing holiday here at Avanti and know that you will fall in love with Dartmouth as I did. Being able to walk into Dartmouth, park and sit outside you wont have a dull day or be disappointed.

I look forward to welcoming you!

Di Collingswood purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Di Collingswood chose South Hams

I love not having to use the car as all the facilities I need are within walking distance, parking outside our house in a quiet road is a bonus & having a sunny aspect.

The town is so friendly and there is little crime. The Dartmouth Music Festival and the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta bring the community together, they are unmissable unique events. There's always plenty going on in the Summer but the Winters are quiet, time for beach walks and log fires in pubs with old world charm.

Mild Winters, sunny Summers breathtaking Devon countryside and coastline, cream teas, crab sandwiches, chocolate box villages, river trips, surf on the shore; whether you are visiting for the first time or returning after many years you will find Dartmouth charming you back for more.

What makes this apartment unique

Apartment Avanti is within walking distance of the town for all your needs. Although a short car ride to the top of the town provides for the larger food supermarkets and a petrol station.

From the apartment you can walk the Dart Valley Trail, coastal walks, and scenic walks to view points above the Dart. A lido swimming pool in the Summer months is at the top of the town and a luxury Spa is part of the Dart Marina Hotel on the river frontage where they offer heavenly treatments.

Greenway the newly opened National Trust Property where Agatha Christie lived is a short river trip up the river Dart. Further a field are the market towns of Totnes and Kingsbridge. The Eden project is approximately 1.20 minutes.

With so much on the doorstep you wont see it all on your first visit.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Here's a few comments from our guests who stayed this year (2014).

Avanti apartment is a little piece of heaven! We arrived stressed and exhausted and staying here was the tonic we needed. From the moment we were welcomed by Di and saw the beautiful Xmas tree we started to chill out. We came for the Xmas market, Santa arriving by boat and the lantern parade. It was truly magical. The shops in Foss Street have so many unusual things – have finished Xmas shopping and will return. Love it! L&D, Kent

Best accommodation we have ever stayed in. Luxurious. Di and Nigel most considerate and kind hosts. Will not hesitate to recommend to friends. Energetic walking week in fine weather and highly recommend conducted tour of Naval college and boat trip to Totnes. Greenway very interesting. Hope to return to dear old Dartmouth one day. Thanks Di and Nigel for a great week. PS Di’s scrap book and info files are very interesting and worth a read. R&P, Market Harborough

What a truly wonderful place to stay. Beautifully designed apartment, so light, bright and inviting. Everything you can think of, or would want is here. It’s like a home from home and Di, what can I say? Such a warm, friendly person and the font of all knowledge! What she doesn’t know about Dartmouth and the surrounding area could fit on a postage stamp. So helpful and informative with any queries we had and all the leaflets, maps etc. were a bonus. When the weather was bad there was a really good selection of DVDs, so handy when rain stops play! So thank you, Di and Nigel for a wonderful Regatta week. Will be back I’m sure. Missing Dartmouth already ? xx. PS. The welcome bottle of wine went down a treat. C&P, Redditch

Disappointed!!! That we only stayed 2 nights! Wonderful accommodation, great view, marvellous amenities, beautifully designed and Dartmouth is such a pretty place too. Thank you both for hosting. The weather wasn’t good but we have enjoyed our stay. The highlight of our holiday in the UK. B&L, New Zealand

Many thanks. The lovely apartment was the icing on the cake in a busy week in what must be one of the prettiest places in the UK. Loved every minute of it. J&M, Cumbria

A big thank you for allowing us to stay in this wonderful apartment. We have finally found our oasis! Cannot wait to return. D, S & L, Wigan

A great week. Avanti was just as we hoped and more! The apartment was cosy, well equipped, fresh and clean, a real home from home with stunning view, wonderful base for exploring countryside, coast and town, despite the variable weather. We intend to return. J&M Windsor

We love Avanti….many thanks to Di and Nigel for making us so welcome when we arrived. Such a lovely warm couple. I could rave on about the beautiful apartment but it speaks for itself. See you next year. C&B, Cheltenham (3rd visit)

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Our 3rd stay in Avanti and everything was as pristine as usual! A lovely apartment very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. Di and Nigel were as friendly and helpful as ever.

It's a steady walk into the town and takes about 10-15 minutes depending whether you're going up or down hill.

We were there in Regatta week and it was fantastic, so much to see and do. We would recommend booking restaurants at busy times though.

We look forward to visiting again in the future and wouldn't look to stay anywhere else.

Clean, modern and great for a relaxing week

  • 5 of 5

Met by the owner on arrival, very helpful and just a lovely person. We had no problems at all whilst we were there, loved the swanky bathroom, never cooked but the kitchen was good enough to have done a Sunday roast for a family! It was great to have more than enough glasses and cups so we didn't have to wash up every time we used 2 , a lovely stay, lots to do around Dartmouth and the town had lots of good places to eat, never had a bad experience. Cant fault the accommodation or the town.

Great property in every way

  • 5 of 5

Had a week away with my wife whilst kids away, great location for walking and seeing some fantastic National Trust properties. Dartmouth had lots of places to eat and drink in the evening too so I never had to drive in the evenings.

Property was very clean and all looked new , the bathroom was great as I could lie down and being over 6 ft that is rare! Great views over the town but very quiet at night. I would recommend this property to others.

Brilliant property, great weather, great week.

  • 5 of 5

Avanti is a class property on the hillside above Dartmouth town and harbour.

Di is a super host, with great local knowledge and info re where to visit and where to eat.

The property itself oozes class with all mod cons and everything you would want from a home from home.

The outside patio area was great for relaxing and sunbathing on, and for enjoying lazy breakfasts, or an al fresco dinner.

We were lucky, we had great weather for our weeks stay.

The apartment lies above the street and there are 4 flights of steps to get up,to it.

Parking is available on the street, but you may have a short walk back to the apartment. You also find you have to drive half on the footpath to get down the street. Unbelievably the road is two way, so don't be surprised to see a car coming towards you, just don't panic!!!! Lots of the roads in the area are very narrow with passing places on them, as I said, don't panic, local drivers are very courteous.

The walk to/from town is hilly and may be difficult for older people or anyone with asthma or heart conditions.

Taxis are available locally and it will only cost £3.30 to/from the town incl, pick up.

Would thoroughly recommend Avanti as a holiday apartment, and Dartmouth a holiday destination.
