About The Owner

Marcela and I live in Winchester with our young son, Christopher who is aged eleven. He goes to St Bede's, the local primary school. I work as a adviser for a number of companies and travel a great deal. After a hectic schedule of airports and hotels I can think of nothing nicer than being with my family in Carteret. After a good meal and bottle of wine I look forward to closing the shutters and sleeping soundly. The apartment is our retreat and we have furnished it accordingly: we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do and welcome your feedback.

The Owner purchased this apartment in 2008

Why The Owner chose Cherbourg area

We purchased our apartment in the Residence d'Angleterre after staying in Carteret with our son and frequently visit it ourselves.

As i mentioned above I am a keen yachtsman but Marcela suffers badly from "mal de mer" - the apartment: with its waterside location; the unspoilt beaches and wonderful restaurants are the perfect compromise. In fact, in the summer i berth our yacht in the marina and we sail/drive the Cotentin penisula.

I noted many years ago that the people of Carteret are extremely friendly and none more so than Sebastian who owns La Grand Voile, a nautically themed shop on the water's edge.

What makes this apartment unique

We have furnished it with our own good quality furniture and delicious bedding. To sleep in darkness, with absolutely no noise, in crisp Egyptian cotton is the perfect tonic to the hussle and bussle of working in London and commuting to Winchester.

The apartment is only twenty five minutes drive from Cherbourg so with the fast ferry from Portsmouth we can have lunch in Carteret and be home in time for dinner.

The addition recently of a garage underneath further enhances the apartment as parking in the street is becoming increasingly difficult. There is a municipal car park nearby which has a merry-go-round which is great for children.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We enjoy Carteret more each time we visit. The beach, scenery and local cuisine are always a pleasure. This visit was made extra special by this wonderful apartment. Can't wait for next year." Tom Sherlock, Ireland.

"We had a great week in this lovely apartment - perfect contrast after a week in "La Porcherie" (the piggery) in the Dordogne. We have been to the beach every day - i've never heard little Mille squal with excitment so much: sand; sun & rockpools." Emma & Simon Fox, Kent

"Despite some disappointing weather on a couple of days we had a brilliant holiday here in this fantastic apartment. Lovely area; friendly locals & good food. A great place for exploring the coast, Normandy beaches and surrounding areas." Sarah Evans-Howe, Aylesbury

Lovely apartment, lovely seaside village

  • 4 of 5

The apartment was lovely, clean, spacious, secure etc. Super fast broadband was a lovely surprise, and kept our kids happy. Bedding and the towels supplied were of an excellent standard. Underfloor heating kept us snug on the cooler days. Unfortunately due to the time of year we were not able to really use the balcony as it was shaded and chilly, but I think it would be an added bonus in true summer. The use of a secure garage was excellent, and just a few steps over the road to a splendid Boulangerie and patisserie.... Cartaret is a lovely, but small place, we went in April, so very quiet. The beaches were beautiful and unspoilt. There was also a lovely Walk to the lighthouse, the views were terrific. We also went for a stroll to the marina which was nice too. On a few occasions during the week at very low tide there was a very strange "eggy" smell from the estuary, but not every day, so that wasn't too bad and there was no sign of it at the beach. Handy supermarket a few miles away in Barneville. Lots of restaurants, everyone recommended the Le Cap.

Beautiful and peaceful at Carteret

  • 5 of 5

We had stayed in the apartment just over two years ago and are sorry we have had to wait so long for a return stay. The apartment is beautifully maintained, quiet (at times we seemed to be the only people in the building!) and blissfully comfortable and warm. We enjoyed daily walks and eating out locally and think it a perfect place in which to enjoy Carteret and the Cherbourg peninsula. The only negative was that the light on the stairs was not working and it was dangerous to use them. All in all a wonderful place, with a warm welcome, and superb service from the owner. Highly recommended!

A great late-Summer break in Carteret

  • 5 of 5

We had a very good break in this well-equipped, immaculately-presented and quiet apartment slap in the middle of this charming little town, combined fishing port and yachting venue. Within 5 mins walk we found at least 10 eating places ranging from sandwich bar to Michelin Star; an excellent boulangerie and 2 gourmet shops at 50 yards, supermarket 3 mins drive.

Stunning beaches at 10 mins walk/3 mins drive with lovely views to Jersey. We enjoyed some excellent walks on deserted beaches and footpaths both nearby and at Portbail just down the coast. Also a great bike ride on the "Green Roads" (old rail lines) criss-crossing the peninsula - bike hire just opposite the apartment. This is an ideal place/property for a (small) family holiday with everything nearby and minimal need to use the car.

We will be recommending it to friends and will very likely return.

Fantastic Carteret

  • 5 of 5

We had such a nice time. The apartment is spotless and you do get to sleep in complete darkness with absolutely no noise, as the owner's comment says. Beds were indeed extremely comfortable and the apartment is appointed to a very high standard. The location is perfect and there is a deli and bread shop right opposite the entrance to the aprtment block. The market is sensational and there are loads of excellent eateries. The Bar du Cap seems to be a hub for many and for a couple of days you could leave your car and just wander about as there is plenty for all to do. We went swimming every day in the sea and there is a a lovely lifeguarded beach with a cocktail bar / pizza, barbecue shack for parents to chill in while the kids play on the beach. It's got great atmosphere and life without being busy, even in the middle of August. Everyone is very friendly and it's as if there is and infectious good mood floating about. I almost dont want to post this review for fear of making the place too popular but go and try out this chic and refreshing place. We were lucky enough to meet Tim and Marcela too which was a nice way to end our week. I think they had booked themselves into their own apartment which says it all really! Oh and Portbail and the drive up the coast is very nice..... Will definitely go again.

The fabulous beach is a ten minute stroll along the estuary, passing many delightful restaurants and the Gare Maritime. The water is warmed by the gulf stream and at low tide forms great pools for children to play in. The beaches have been repeatedly awarded a European blue flag for cleanliness. La Potiniere offers a haven where Mums and Dads can relax on the sun drenched terrace, or an evening cocktail while children of all nationalities play safely together on the beach.

The main ferry terminal at Cherbourg is a 40 minute drive from Carteret along the quiet D650.

The ancient town of Portbail is 5 miles to the south. St Sauveur is 7 miles away. Saint Mere Eglise is 20 miles away.

Further Details:

Carteret has a bakery, post office and marina. A ferry runs a daily service (depending on the tides) to Jersey. Le Comptoir de Carteret sells a variety of food and vegetables; it also has an extensive selection of fine wines. A much larger supermarket: Carrefour, is to be found on the outskirts of Barneville just a couple of minutes away by car. The Yacht club, as you would expect welcomes visiting yachtsmen whether they have sailed over, or taken the ferry! Inside the nautical shop, La Grand Voile, one can find a plethora of goodies - many of which have found their way into our apartment.
