|Minimum Stay||2 - 7 nights|
Nestling in the Vosges Mountains of N.E. France, an easy 350 mile drive from Calais and close to the French/German/Swiss borders, 'Le Cerf' is a well-equipped 3 bedroom chalet set back on the hillside, and enjoys beautiful views, space, peace and quiet. Entry to the chalet is through a large porch into a spacious open plan living room, dining room and kitchen with log burning stove. All 3 double/twin bedrooms have en-suite facilities, 2 with direct garden access and the master bedroom has access onto a large balcony. The kitchen is well equipped and modern. In the summer Gerardmer and Xonrupt Longemer lakes provide watersports, boating and walks; and beaches, supervised swimming and flumes on Gerardmer lake. In winter only 10-15 kms from alpine and cross-country skiing. The Alsace vineyards are a short drive away along with a wealth of historic attractions, family activities, walking and cycling in the Ballon des Vosges national park and along mountain summits.
We have owned the property for 10 years and successfully rented out during this time with friends looking after the property for the first few years. In October 2010 we moved to the Vosges permanently and live next door, enabling us to look after our guests even better than before. We take every care and opportunity to make your holiday a huge success and you only have to ask and we will do our best; weather and 'Acts of God' though are beyond our control!
We are very happy to spend time advising you on the best places to go, where to park, best routes to follow, restaurants etc. without infringing on your privacy and peace and quiet.
Dawn Keddie purchased this chalet in 2004
It's very French! Just what we wanted and we travelled around France for several months looking for the ideal area. We knew we wanted a snow and summer season - the Alps too expensive, the Pyrenees too far, the Dordogne too English and only one season though we did find a house we loved. The Vosges - beautiful - very green so it does rain but also lovely hot periods, fantastic Autumns and very pretty Springs with thousands of miniature daffodils in all the fields and a bi-annual daffodil festival. Serious winter snow from end of December to beginning of March but of course every year is different and there are no guarantees.
Le Grand Valtin is a small hamlet with beautiful views and there is nothing quite like sitting on the balcony with a glass of wine enjoying it all!
The property is easy to find especially with my directions sent to you well in advance. Within 10 minutes of leaving peace and tranquility of Le Grand Valtin you can be by the lakes, ski slopes, centre of town. When there is snow the road past the chalet is snow ploughed and gritted when necessary.
Favourite comments are: the views, 'home from home', everything you could possibly want/need to make your holiday comfortable is supplied, all bedrooms have their own bathrooms.
Most frequent comment from our visitors' book: welcome given and helpfulness of Paul and Dawn.
I just wanted to drop you a note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at Le Cerf last week - we agreed it was definitely our best family holiday so far and this was due to three things.
Firstly, the region is fantastic - so much to do a such a variety whether you want culture or sport, relaxation or action. I think the Southern Vosges are a reasonably secret location hence few crowds and a real sense of escape.
Secondly, the house was great - really well-equipped, with the two essentials that make a real difference to me in holiday homes - comfy seats in the lounge and great showers! The views in the morning when curtains are thrown back are amazing.
Finally, you and Paul were great hosts with fantastic local knowledge that made a real difference to our stay, taking hassle out of our plans. You were there when we needed you without being there too much if that makes sense - you have the balance right.
I have already been recommending you to friends and family and we will d
We spent a week in this gorgeous cottage and it was absolutely perfect.
The cottage itself is equipped to a very high standard, immaculate clean and very cozy and inviting. The bedrooms and bathrooms on two different levels provided privacy if wanted, the living room with the woodburning stove was well used in the evenings :-)
We found everything in perfect working order and being a cook by heart I indulged the extremely well equipped and organised kitchen.
The location is quiet and because it was in between seasons a lot of restaurants/locations were still closed.
Walks were endless and plenty of information and detailed maps thoughtfully provided by our hosts.
We loved it and will definitely come back, if we may.
Thanks once again to our caring hosts!
Fantastic property with everything we could have wanted, nice easy going owners.
Excellent walking right from the door well marked paths.
Very good cycling country.
Would recommend this place to any of my friends.
A very well equipped chalet in a quiet area with lots of interesting places to visit within half an hour. We enjoyed the walking , mountain biking and kayaking in the local lakes , as well as lovely food on local restaurant s.
Dawn and Paul were really helpful band friendly hosts .
Great value, good location, welcoming and helpful hosts. Chalet was comfortable and well equipped.
We had a great time stay at le cerf. The house was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The pictures don't do justice to the great views from the balcony. It's a great base to explore the vosage region.
We had a roaring fire on arrival and both Dawn and Paul taken the time to give us a quick briefing on the house and things to do locally.
A special thanks to Dawn and Paul for their hospitality. They were attentive, knowledgeable and provide some good advice on things to do. Dawn cooked for us one night and also made our son a cake for his birthday. Both were excellent and great value for money.
Thanks again Dawn and Paul for a great stay (and thanks for rescuing us after our sat nav got a little lost)
This was our second stay at Le Cerf and the more we explore this area the more we love it!
The chalet is well equipped and comfortable with a cosy woodburner for colder evenings.
As mentioned in other reviews Dawn's meals are delicious and a real treat if you don't fancy cooking or going out to one of the nearby restaurants.
Dawn and Paul are very welcoming and helpful with lots of tips to help you make the most of your holiday.
We visited the zoo at Mulhouse, which is set in fabulous gardens, also Riquewihr and Eguisheim, just two of several picturesque and quite magical towns along the wine route. We loved the local walks and played tennis in nearby Xonrupt.
We wanted to book for next February in half term to try skiing here for the first time but the chalet is already booked, which is very disappointing as staying elsewhere wouldn't be quite the same!
We will certainly be back. Thanks so much Dawn and Paul for such a lovely holiday.
