Overview

About the property

Old Cognac Distillery, Perignac, Charente Maritime. Accomodation For 2 To 10 In A Calm Environment Within Walking Distance Of All Amenities

A single dwelling, formerly the master’s house, Old Cognac Distillery is perfect for an intimate holiday for two and yet suitable for larger parties alike, with up to four large bedrooms, including a children’s bedroom and comfortably sleeping 10. [Additional sleeping arrangements can be provided on request.]

A traditional french house, the property is set in grounds of two acres of which over an acre is a park of mature trees. Approached by a long balustraded terrace, the front entrance is through impressive, double, oak doors. There is a sense of history on entering the main reception rooms with their marble fireplaces, elegant plaster work and lofty ceilings. Climb up the walnut staircase to the upper level and you will tread antique wooden floors to airy louvred shuttered rooms. Very generously proportioned, with light filled spaces and furnished sympathetically Old Cognac Distillery offers flexible accommodation to suit a variety of needs. Enjoy every comfort of home, including a well appointed kitchen, additional separate shower room, satellite TV and wi-fi.

Leading from the main hall is the main reception room or Salon with double aspect views of the grounds to the front of the property. A well proportioned room, it is furnished with three large sofas. There is a marble fireplace with a wood-burning stove, DVD player and satellite TV with Freeview programmes.

Up the spiralling charentaise staircase is a large landing which leads to two generously sized double bedrooms each with en-suite facilities and a large children’s bedroom with its own separate toilet and basin.

The Master Bedroom has an individually commissioned king size four poster bed. The second bedroom [The Blue Room] has a vintage french bedroom suite with double bed. Bedroom three is the children’s bedroom with two sets of bunk beds and bedroom four, downstairs, overlooks the Courtyard. This has a typically french double bed and the use of the separate shower room. In total the house sleeps 10 comfortably. With prior arrangement sofa beds can be provided to accommodate extra guests.

In the back wing of the house, approached by a small set of stairs, is a well equipped kitchen. This is fitted with a cooker, microwave, dishwasher, large refrigerator and second fridge-freezer and a comprehensive array of cooking equipment for those who enjoy cooking. A real family meeting centre, there is a large bespoke dining table seating 12 and an island breakfast unit for two or three people to sit at.

Beyond the kitchen is a large rear hall with a washing machine for holiday laundry. Leading on from here is the Courtyard Bedroom, a separate toilet, large utility sink and access to the shower room.

Although heating is not necessary in the summer season, it can get cooler in spring and autumn. A central heating system provides heating to all rooms. There are wood burning stoves in the kitchen and salon. If heating is required a separate charge is made.

Whether you choose to be indoors or outside there is a space for everyone. Step out at the front of the house onto the terrace, wonderful for quietly enjoying the vista and tranquility of the park and, set with a table and chairs, an alternative space for outdoor eating.

To the rear is the large courtyard, secure behind the main gates, and accessed from the side personnel gate, close to the kitchen. Enclosed by farm buildings, dating back to when the property was a working farm, it offers a private and safe space, ideal for letting children play in unattended safety.

Within the courtyard’s enclosing buildings is the Preau, a large open fronted barn, originally used to store farm machinery. It is a shady, peaceful space furnished with a BBQ, dining table and chairs, lounging furniture, table football and table tennis table, perfect for alfresco eating at any time of day. At the far end is the entrance to the gated, walled, former kitchen garden, providing a completely safe and secluded environment. Now laid to lawn with occasional seating spaces it has the large, automatically controlled 10m x 5m swimming pool. You will be able to find a relaxing place to suit you in the sun or under the trees in the shade. An outdoor table under the shade of the pergola offers an alternative spot for outdoor eating.

You will love spending time away from your busy world to relax in this lovely house, but if you want to do something more energetic, step outside the property to explore the vineyards and gently undulating farm land, perfect for cycling and walking. It is an easy walk to the main village, Perignac, where daily bread can be bought at the Tabac. There is also an excellent family restaurant/bar [Orchidee], take away pizza restaurant, village store with integral artisan butcher, excellent boulangerie, pharmacy and hairdresser. Opposite the church is the local cognac distillery, where you can enjoy a degustation and on some days fresh oysters can be bought in the square by the church.

Details for bike hire and organised cycling tours are available on request.

About Judith & Geoff

Having holidayed for many years in this area, we finally decided to buy a property here. Knowing how difficult it is to find a quality property to rent for the family's main holiday we set out to provide a house that had all the modern facilities a family would need without losing the basic charm of a traditional French house.

Judith & Geoff purchased this house in 2009

Why Judith & Geoff chose Pérignac

The description says it all. It is a beautiful, traditional, Charentaise Maison de Maitre with lots of safe, secure and private corners to explore and enjoy. Perfect for families and smaller groups.

What makes this house unique

Privacy without being secluded. We are on the edge of the village with good access to local shops and services yet overlook fields and the open countryside. Great for walking, cycling or just relaxing.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Lovely house, wonderful stay - particularly enjoyed the Orchidee restaurant in Perignac and the Côte Sauvage beach north of Royan.

Beautiful stay in authentic french manor!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 days in this beautifully decorated, spotless house with gorgeous garden and orchard (and pool!). Visited local bakery each morning for authentic french fare. Geoff and Judith were incredibly pleasant and helpful throughout! Lovely place to stay, relaxing by the pool or adventure into surrounding areas!

Would highly recommend this for a romantic getaway as well as family friendly vacation!

Thanks again!

Excellent séjour dans cette véritable maison de Maître d'une ancienne distillerie de Cognac

  • 5 of 5

Maison Maître between Cognac and Pons

  • 5 of 5

The Maison Maître is by far the most comfortable and best appointed home we have stayed at. We spent three weeks at this lovely home and after having rented family homes in France since 1980 this is without doubt the best. It is full of character and the préau with its large dining table and fridge proved invaluable, as the weather was not always kind, allowing us to barbecue and dine out.

It is also private without being isolated, the village is a comfortable walk and supplies all your needs and should you require further shopping Pons is less than 10 minutes away.

The owners Judith and Geoff have provided a superb collection of amusements should you ever feel the need. They were extremely helpful if you needed any advice, and were very knowledgeable about the area. Also of all houses we have used, where the owners were on site, they were as they claimed " most discrete" unless you went looking for them, but always easy to find. This is unlike many houses we have rented where " on site" has proved intrusive.

Geoff proved to be most knowledgeable about wines and will happily do a wine tasting for you. We availed ourselves of this and it was most informative and enjoyable.

We will definitely be returning unless circumstances prevent us.

Really nice place with great style

  • 4 of 5

Lovely place with great style. Unfortunately the weeks we were there the weather wasn't great which is I think unusual. Geoff and Judith were very helpful and kind with advice, suggestions and help. The pool was a little cold due to the bad weather but is in a nice secluded area safe for kids. Overall a really nice place.

Owner's Response: Thanks Tim. It is a shame that the pool was not at its usual temperature. It is an exceptional year but that did not help you with your young children. As a result of your comments and our own observations, I have already ordered an air heat exchanger for next year that will be fitted over the winter period. It will guarantee (as far as it is possible) a water temperature of 26 to 28 degrees Celcius for next season.

A Tardis of a property

  • 5 of 5

Much larger than the photos show, the property is a wonderful throwback to the size of houses that we used to have in the UK. Worth every penny with a well equipped house, privacy, peace and quiet. Although the area offers a lot of visits worth making, just staying at the house is enough to really enjoy a holiday. Highly recommended.

Old Cognac Distillery, Preroux nr Perignac

  • 5 of 5

The first (and lasting) impression of each of us (twelve of us stayed at various times) was that the distillery is a jaw-droppingly beautiful place to spend a family holiday. It is just as lovely as the photo shows but the courtyard and garden spaces beyond are no less impressive; everything is immaculately presented and very well maintained, we had everything we needed. The pool was our favourite thing but we also made full use of an excellently-appointed kitchen and we were able to eat outside every night under the stars. Our hosts were extremely helpful and anxious to make sure we had everything we needed. The distillery isn't far from the coast, or from Cognac, which is definitely worth a visit. We were sad to leave and would love to go back, next time armed with bikes; strongly recommended.

Old Cognac Distillery is the ideal base from which to explore the Charente Maritime and beyond. Only 8 kilometres away is the medieval town of Pons, with all the local shops, and attractions you are likely to need. Royan and the Atlantic beaches are easily reached and the towns of Cognac and Saintes are a 15 minute drive by car. Bordeaux and La Rochelle are both an hours drive away.

The Charente-Maritime is an area of fine sandy beaches, pretty islands and white-washed villages, towns and buildings steeped in history. Along the coast there are more than 100 beaches to enjoy, including family friendly beaches within easy reach of Maison Maitre, as are the zoo at La Palmyre, the Aquarium at La Rochelle, the oyster beds at Marennes, the Iles d’Oleron and de Re. Take the ferry from Royan and the whole of the Medoc opens up before you, whilst journeying south towards Bordeaux takes you to the magnificent areas of Sauternes, Pomerol and St Emilion.

There is a wealth of fresh seafood, the Charente Maritime producing the highest yield of and best oysters in France, with Marennes being the centre for this. Local markets proliferate the region, with cheeses, fruit and vegetables, sausages and air dried hams being sold “direct de la producer.” There are small independent wine merchants that produce very drinkable Charentais wines as well as selling the local fortified wine “Pineau de Charentes” and of course fine Cognac and Bordeaux wines, favourably priced for their quality. Information about local markets is available from Tourist Information Centres. Throughout the year there are many local fetes and festivals offering locally produced products and entertainment
