The Taverna is where my grandmother used to make her wine. The private entrance is to the rear of the villa. It has been completely renovated and decorated in Mediterranean colours. There are two double bedrooms and a pull out couch in the living room. There are also two bathrooms, one featuring a bathtub, the other a large shower. There is a washing machine for laundry and we provide racks for hanging clothes out to dry. In the summer the taverna is by far the coolest place in the house! In the winter we have a wood burning fireplace (in the kitchen) to keep the space cosy. The living room features a couch which easily converts into a double bed so the unit can sleep 6 persons. The eat-in kitchen is fully equipped with microwave, dishwasher and all necessary appliances. There is also a television in the dining area. Outside is a well tended garden, deckchairs provided! The taverna faces onto the rear apartment so if friends or family are staying there access is very easy.
The house used to belong to my grandmother and has been handed down to the present generation. My mother had it lovingly restored a few years ago and it is beautifully decorated with period furniture. It is surrounded by well tended gardens and a pretty fountain. We offer bed and breakfast in the main villa (ask for prices) but rent out two self contained flats. The house is only 5 minutes or less walk to shops, banks, restaurants and parks. It is also close to the walled old town of Barga with its cathedral, theatre and cobbled streets. There is a good bus service to Lucca, Pisa and nearby seaside resort, Viareggio. The train station, Barga Gallicano, is a short cab ride away and from there you can venture further afield, to Florence, the Cinque Terre etc. We also have the spectacular Grotto del Vento (Wind Caves) nearby. There is an outdoor swimming pool (20 mins walk), a movie theatre and many fine restaurants. We provide free parking inside the gates or across the street.
My family have owned house for three generations. I spent many happy summers here with my nonna and even went to school in Barga for a while (which is how I come to speak Italian!)
We are only in residence over the summer months and in the Easter holidays as we have our main residence in London. We will always be 'on site'' to help with any queries as we live on the ground floor or the villa, above the Taverna.
We have been renting to holiday makers for over 10 years now and love opening up our beautiful home to visitors.
Having worked extensively in the Travel Business both in the USA and England I am uniquely qualified for this task! We also have two properties in London, UK (Paddington) which are also listed with Owners Direct and which we rent out all the year round!
Maria Barry purchased this apartment in 1949
This was my grandmothers house. We love coming here every year as there is so much going on in Barga over the summer months!
Clean, fresh air. Beautiful mountain scenery with the ocean only an hour or so away by car (a bit longer on train/bus). Easy access to Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre etc. Lots of English (Scottish) speaking people around if your Italian is not up to snuff....
By car, one can reach the seaside in about 1 hour (by mountain roads) or 2 and a half hours (roughly) by bus. It is also possible to take train to beach but requires a cab to train station.
The nearest airport is Pisa (one and a quarter hours by car or 2 and a half hours by bus). Although having a car is an asset it is by no means essential. We are lucky enough to have a fairly frequent and reliable bus and train service. The nearest train station is Barga Gallicano.
Lucca is one and a quarter hours away by bus (45 minutes driving).
Castelnuevo is 30 minutes away by bus (20 mins driving).
Pisa is 2 and a half hours away by bus (1 and a quarter hours driving).
Florence is about 2 and a half hours away by train (2 hrs driving).
The Cinque Terre can be reached by bus in about 3 hrs (2 hrs driving).
There is a cinema in town showing new releases. There is an outdoor swimming pool about 20 mins walk from the house. There is a large supermarket, Conad, walking distance from house. Restaurants abound in Barga and we can particularly recommend Verde Luna, in the old town, for fish and seafood, Da Riccardo for it's views from the terrace and L'Osteria in the main square of the old town.
