Rue Laitiere is a pretty little 18c town house which sleeps four in two bedrooms and is situated in a secluded courtyard in the heart of historic Bayeux. The double bedroom has a 1.80 bed, while the second bedroom has two single beds. Everything you require is on your doorstep. Great restaurants, mouth watering boulangeries and patisseries, museums, supermarkets etc are all within walking distance.
We are a family of 5, our eldest 2 children attend university in Caen and our youngest is at College in Bayeux. We moved to France in 2002 from Gloucestershire.
We live approximately 20 minutes from Bayeux, as our children say, 'in the middle of a field'. Husband, Charles, is a tour guide with Bayeux Shuttle, while Charlotte runs the Bayeux gite, home and sources antiques and French collectibles and vintage items for sale in the UK.
Charlotte Liddell purchased this house in 2007
We fell in love with Rue Laiteire the moment we saw it. The location is secluded, yet within the heart of the medieval town of Bayeux. All you could possibly want is within a few minutes walk of the property, mouthwatering boulangeries, boutique shops, bars and the wonderful Saturday morning market, not to mention the fantastic restaurants all within 'staggering' distance of the house.
Bayeux was untouched during WWII, thus still has some of its wonderful old buildings, including the Bayeux Cathedral, built by William the Conquerors brother, Bishop Odo. The town is delightful.
The train station is just 10 minutes walk from the house, by direct train Paris is just two hours away. Rue Laitiere has a secluded courtyard garden which is ideal for those travelling with children.
Rue Laitiere is within 10 minutes drive of the wonderfully sandy D-Day landing beaches, which are ideal for bucket and spade holidays. Caen, Mont St Michel, Honfleur and a host of other tourist attractions are all within easy reach. The World famous Bayeux Tapestry is within five minutes walk of the house.
Thank you for the goodie basket on our arrival which was a blessing for a late evening arrival. We cannot believe how quiet it is here. You have really put an effort into making 8 rue Laitiere a home away from home. We had a fantastic time! Brian and Carole L. - Vancouver, BC, Canada
In our short week we walked Bayeux extensively and became positive that this house can not be bested. You have a gem that you have polished to a great lustre. This is quite the lovely little house.

Your cottage is a perfect spot to retreat to after enjoying the many varied attractions that this corner of Normandy has to offer. Thank you for sharing this little gem with us and also we have appreciated your helpfulness greatly.

This is a lovely property that gives privacy while being in the center of Bayeux and all that it has to offer. We enjoyed four nights here without the need of a car although we did take advantage of the tourist services easily available to tour the D-day beaches and spend a day in Mont St. Michel. The Bayeux Tapestry and cathedral are just around the corner and there are many restaurants from which to choose. We had a delightful stay thanks to Charlotte and Charles.
Charlotte's townhome is a gem. It's charming and quaint. It has two bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower between them. The shower is the best shower I've had at any apartment in France. The kitchen has a nice oven and a good stove, and opening the upstairs and downstairs windows provides an open, airy feeling in the entire home. The home is situated within a private and secure courtyard, and it's very peaceful and quiet. Finally, the owners are truly wonderful people. It doesn't get much better than this.
What can I say? 8 Rue Laitiere is a gem. It is centrally located in Bayeux with all the town's attractions no more than 15 minutes walk. There are supermarkets and bakers seconds away. The house is delightful. The sunny courtyard is the perfect spot to eat or read in the evening. There is a fine kitchen diner and a terrific shower room as well as two decent sized bedrooms. We did not want to leave and have every intention of returning. A wonderful place to stay.
A beautiful house & jardin - quiet, peaceful & very relaxing! A fantastic base - within walking distance of the Cathedral, Tapestry, shops, tourist info, le Petit Train & restaurants. Wonderful service & food at la Maison Blanche just a few doors down. Le Petit Train was a great discovery with one of us not able to walk great distances. The Bayeux Tapestry is truly amazing - could easily see it many times over.
Highly recommend Rue Laitiere as a place to stay! We'd love to come back again & explore more of Bayeux & Normandy!
Thank you so much, Gloria, Ian & Ruth
We felt so lucky to have chosen this charming house in the heart of historic Bayeux. It really is exceptional - we have already made plans to return for a second visit.
The sunny, quiet and secluded flower-filled courtyard is perfect for breakfast or drinks before strolling along the street for dinner. The spire of the magnificent cathedral rises over the wall of the courtyard and the chiming bells add to the sensation that you are living in the best of all possible worlds. The bells are silenced in the evening and begin again at about 9am, so your peaceful sleep in very comfortable beds isn't disturbed.
Everything you might want to see in this truly delightful town is just around the corner ; the 11th century cathedral, the Tapestry completed around 1076, trips to the D-Day beaches, half-timbered mediaeval houses, the river, the Wednesday and Saturday markets, excellent cafes, shops and restaurants, patisseries, even a little department store and supermarket. The tourist office is very helpful and is the starting point for an excellent walking tour of old Bayeux ( in English).
Thoughtful and practical touches included wine, fruit and chocolate left by our lovely hosts Charles and Charlotte, wifi, English tv, a dvd player, a selection of books, dvds and cds, a cafetiere ( French press), an excellent new shower, a washing machine and tumble dryer and parking available outside or nearby.
The house itself is lovely - well equipped, charmingly and sympathetically decorated and comfortable.
If you wish to visit Normandy, this couple believe that you could not possibly do better than to choose this marvellous house in the stunning town of Bayeux.
We stayed for 6 nights in this lovely town house. It is secluded behind a charming blue door on a small side street next to the Cathedral. First of all, let me say that Charles and Charlotte were perfect hosts. Charles met us with some goodies and a quick tour of the place. I found it to be clean and organized. The bed was comfortable and the kitchen well appointed. There is a lovely courtyard that would be great during spring or summer. There is a small Carrefour just a few blocks away. Because you are in the middle of the old town, you can walk just about everywhere. We were able to use paid parking just outside our door and for a couple of oldtimers, that made things very easy. We have been to Bayeux several times and found 8 Laitiere to be an outstanding spot to stay when visiting Bayeux. The bells from the cathedral and the seagulls were just lovely. Close to restaurants, museums, and shopping. Absolutely perfect! I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Thanks Charles and Charlotte!
The fantastic sandy D-Day beaches which stretch for miles are just 10 minutes by car. The water is safe and shallow and ideal for bucket and spade holidays. A number of beaches also have small bars/restaurants for those sand free lunches.
Our nearest airport is Carpiquet, Caen 20 mins. A new service between London Southend and Carpiquet is now in operation. Bayeux train station has direct trains to and from Paris in 2 hours. However, a car is strongly recommended if you are intending to tour the area. The ferry port at Caen is 40 minutes from Bayeux for travel to Portsmouth, Cherbourg is 90 minutes for travel to Portsmouth and Poole. I'm happy to provide a discount code for up to 15% discount on ferry crossings.
Bayeux on your doorstep. Caen centre 25 mins, Honfleur 90 mins, Mont St Michel 90 mins, St Malo 2 hours. Paris by direct train 2 hours, 3.5 hours by car. Bayeux train station is 10 minutes walk.
The American Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer is where nearly 10,000 Americans are buried as a result of the D-Day landings during WWII, is 30 minutes drive from Bayeux. Fascinating museums for those interested in WWII are within easy reach in Bayeux, Arromanches and Caen.
Mont St Michel, the most visited site in France after the Eiffel Tower, is superb and a must for your list of places to go, however, be prepared for huge crowds especially during the summer months.
For those who are sporty, horse riding, land-yachting, swimming, kayaking, hand-gliding, adventure courses and bungee jumping are all easily accessible.
Bayeux has a large number of restaurants and bars to suit all budgets, all of which are within easy walking distance of the property.
There are various companies which offer specialist tours of the D-Day landing beaches, my husband works for one of them ! Guided tours of the Cathedral are available, there are a numbering of companies offering a mini bus service to Mt St Michel for those without a car. We are happy to help with any further information.
