About Charlotte Liddell

We are a family of 5, our eldest 2 children attend university in Caen and our youngest is at Lycee in Bayeux. We moved to France in 2002 from Gloucestershire., U.K.

We live approximately 20 minutes from Bayeux, as our children say, 'in the middle of a field'. Husband, Charles, is a tour guide with Bayeux Shuttle, while Charlotte runs the Bayeux gite, home and sources antiques and French collectibles and vintage items for sale in the UK.

Charlotte Liddell purchased this house in 2007

Why Charlotte Liddell chose Bayeux area

We fell in love with Rue Laiteire the moment we saw it. The location is secluded, yet within the heart of the medieval town of Bayeux. All you could possibly want is within a few minutes walk of the property, mouthwatering boulangeries, boutique shops, bars and the wonderful Saturday morning market, not to mention the fantastic restaurants all within 'staggering' distance of the house.

Bayeux was untouched during WWII, thus still has some of its wonderful old buildings, including the Bayeux Cathedral, built by William the Conquerors brother, Bishop Odo. The town is delightful.

What makes this house unique

The train station is just 10 minutes walk from the house, by direct train Paris is just two hours away. Rue Laitiere has a secluded courtyard garden which is ideal for those travelling with children.

Rue Laitiere is within 10 minutes drive of the wonderfully sandy D-Day landing beaches, which are ideal for bucket and spade holidays. Caen, Mont St Michel, Honfleur and a host of other tourist attractions are all within easy reach. The World famous Bayeux Tapestry is within five minutes walk of the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the goodie basket on our arrival which was a blessing for a late evening arrival. We cannot believe how quiet it is here. You have really put an effort into making 8 rue Laitiere a home away from home. We had a fantastic time! Brian and Carole L. - Vancouver, BC, Canada

In our short week we walked Bayeux extensively and became positive that this house can not be bested. You have a gem that you have polished to a great lustre. This is quite the lovely little house.

Dennis & Kim O. - Charleston, South Carolina, USA

Your cottage is a perfect spot to retreat to after enjoying the many varied attractions that this corner of Normandy has to offer. Thank you for sharing this little gem with us and also we have appreciated your helpfulness greatly.

Notes on accommodation: All of the rooms overlook the courtyard. In the living room, a sofa and two armchairs surround the old stone fireplace. Adjoining it is the fully fitted modern kitchen, with a dining area, an electric oven and halogen hob, a dishwasher, a washing machine, and a tumble dryer. Internet access is available. Upstairs are the two bedrooms. The double bedroom has just been redecorated (01.2013) in a lovely chinoiserie wallpaper. The second bedroom has a pair of twin beds, and is decorated in cream and pinks. The stylish modern bathroom has a shower, a washbasin, and a toilet. Outside: The front of the two-storey house faces onto the courtyard filled with lush foliage. This is an ideal spot to relax and dine outdoors around the garden table. The little dependance is great for storing prams, bikes etc. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble dryer and freezer + garden furniture. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The rental includes bedding and bath towels, tea towels etc., plus a changeover if guests stay for longer than 2 weeks. Beach towels are not provided. We are happy to leave a 3 course dinner in case of late arrival, details are available on request. Other: The front of the two-storey house faces onto the courtyard filled with lush foliage. This is an ideal spot to relax and dine outdoors to the sound of the cathedral bells ringing in the background.

Best holiday ever!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect holiday for us - you can choose between visiting the many beautiful beaches, walking, visiting interesting historical sites or just relaxing in the very beautiful Bayeux. Luckily our stay coincided with the Medival Festival in Bayeux, which was incredible. We couldn't have asked for better hosts and Charlotte made sure we were supported from beginning to end. I have already recommended this beautiful town house, which is full of character, to our friends. We go back home rested and relaxed. Thank you for a truly memorable stay.

Utterly beautiful and totally French!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here in early June '16, but the review tool only goes back as far as July 2016 ando won't allow me to submit our actually dates! The purpose of our trip (two adults, two children) was to experience and explore the real Normandy - the sights, the beaches, the cuisine and the history. Charlotte's property was perfectly situated for this, and provided for all our needs comfortably. We were a minutes' walk from shops, restaurants and the awe-inspiring cathedral. An easy drive from the beaches, Caen and Lisieux. Charlotte was wonderful, providing a welcome hamper of wine, cheese, fruit, chocolate and other bits, and provided a lot of useful information for the local area. There is nothing quite as lovely as sitting in the courtyard on a summer's evening, sipping wine and listening to the bells of the cathedral chiming. Highly recommended!!

Great Space and Location

  • 5 of 5

This condo is located in the heart of Bayeux steps away from everything. It is off the busy streets and in a courtyard and can easily accomadate 3-4 people. The quarters might be a little tight by US standards but easily manageable. The bathroom and shower are great. Easy loading and unloading of bags but you may need to park a few blocks away if you have a rental car. Charlotte is very responsive and has the fridge well stocked and ready to go for your stay.

Fantastically situated right in the centre otthis wonderful town, this cottage was a quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time here, the house is well equipped, it was clean and the bedroom are light and airy. The children's room was a bit cramped with little storage space, fine for little ones but a squeeze for teens.

The bathroom was lovely, the shower was excellent and the warm towel rail ment that everything dried for the morning.

Down stairs we had a well equipped kitchen and snug sitting room with uk TV and a DVD player.

The outside space was the best part of this cottage. The enclosed garden was very safe, and would be ideal for small children or pets to allow to roam without concern. Accessing the house involved a security door and this made the place feel very safe, enough for us to leave our teens when they craved wifi over history.

The house had a washing machine and tumble dryer, wifi and freezer.

Overall this was a great tent and we will do it again

Car: not necessary

The fantastic sandy D-Day beaches which stretch for miles are just 10 minutes by car. The water is safe and shallow and ideal for bucket and spade holidays. A number of beaches also have small bars/restaurants for those sand free lunches.

Our nearest airport is Carpiquet, Caen 20 mins. A new service between London Southend and Carpiquet is now in operation. Bayeux train station has direct trains to and from Paris in 2 hours. However, a car is strongly recommended if you are intending to tour the area. The ferry port at Caen is 40 minutes from Bayeux for travel to Portsmouth, Cherbourg is 90 minutes for travel to Portsmouth and Poole. I'm happy to provide a discount code for up to 15% discount on ferry crossings.

Bayeux on your doorstep. Caen centre 25 mins, Honfleur 90 mins, Mont St Michel 90 mins, St Malo 2 hours. Paris by direct train 2 hours, 3.5 hours by car. Bayeux train station is 10 minutes walk.

Further Details:

The American Cemetery at Colleville sur Mer is where nearly 10,000 Americans are buried as a result of the D-Day landings during WWII, is 30 minutes drive from Bayeux. Fascinating museums for those interested in WWII are within easy reach in Bayeux, Arromanches and Caen.

Mont St Michel, the most visited site in France after the Eiffel Tower, is superb and a must for your list of places to go, however, be prepared for huge crowds especially during the summer months.

For those who are sporty, horse riding, land-yachting, swimming, kayaking, hand-gliding, adventure courses and bungee jumping are all easily accessible.

Bayeux has a large number of restaurants and bars to suit all budgets, all of which are within easy walking distance of the property.

There are various companies which offer specialist tours of the D-Day landing beaches, my husband works for one of them ! Guided tours of the Cathedral are available, there are a numbering of companies offering a mini bus service to Mt St Michel for those without a car. We are happy to help with any further information.
