3 self-catering apartments. Access by private entrance.
The three apartments are within the grand house of Hôtel de Gensac. Built around 1735 this 'hôtel particulier' (private mansion) is one of the historic and architecturally important houses of the town. During the Hundred Years' War, King Edward III installed his son as the administrator of this region of France. Known later by the sobriquet 'The Black Prince', the ruins of his palace chapel still remain as part of the mansion's fabric, helping to warrant its inclusion on one of the town's historic-sites walks.
The three apartments are very different. Cathedrale (130m2) on the first floor is very spacious with all its rooms - sitting area, kitchen/diner, bathroom and two bedrooms - all high ceilinged, light, airy and centrally heated.
The Studio (42m2) on the ground floor, is more modest but still has a separate bathroom and a bedroom leading off the main living area. This room has a three seater settee, a well-equipped kitchen area and pine table to seat four. The bedroom is well furnished with two single beds, bedside tables with lamps, dressing table and a wardrobe The tiled bathroom has a wc, double basins, a shower and heated towel rail.
The Grenier (50m2) has its own seperate entrance off the communal patio. A spacious living area with seperate kitchen leads to the bedroom with two single beds and en suite bathroom.
Leave the apartments by their secure private gate and you are at once in the typically Gascon town of Condom - rich in history, ancient buildings, museums and Roman artifacts. It is dominated by the magnificent cathedral of Saint-Pierre and bisected by the River Baîse, still with the quays once used to load barges with Armagnac brandy en route to Bordeaux. Restaurants and cafes abound to suit all tastes and pockets. Good shops and a twice-weekly market are on the door step for all self-catering needs.
Just outside the town lies the beautiful countryside of The Gers - the very heart of Gascony. No suburbs, no industry, just gently rolling farmland and woodland interspersed with Bastide villages, fortified towns, ancient religious buildings, Chateaux and Gallo-Roman sites. They are all there to be savoured and enjoyed by those with an interest in history and a love and appreciation of countryside, culture, architecture, good eating and above all, a joie de vivre!
Guests staying in the apartments of La Petite Gensac are welcome to use our 12 x 6 meter swimming pool between 10am and 6pm (1000 - 1800 hrs) In order to retain some privacy for the owners, guests are requested to keep to the designated access path and pool surround. Sun loungers are available.

About Kinza Hankinson
Having retired from my Veterinary Practice in Southern England, my wife and I decided to move to a warmer, less frenetic France - taking our two dogs but leaving behind two independent sons. Many visits, much research and thousands of kilometers later we bought and moved into a large, 17th century house in the centre of the small town of Condom in the Gers - the very heart of Gascony - midway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Since 2007 we have renovated the house, and established within its walls three apartments for rental as holiday accommodation. Although used to country life in England, we now appreciate the convenience of living in this small town with all shops and amenities a short walk away but, above all, we love the French way of life. Our lives, becoming accustomed to the slow, laid-back life of rural France, revolve around enjoying the surrounding magnificent countryside, visiting ancient villages and towns steeped in history (usually bloody), gardening, dog walking, following cricket and rugby and entertaining family and friends in this idyllic situation with its continental climate. A perfect retirement!

Why Kinza Hankinson chose Condom
La Cathedrale apartment is within the grand house of Hôtel de Gensac, which is unique. Built around 1735, this 'hotel particulier' (private mansion) is one of the historical and architecturally important houses of the town. Leave the apartment by its secure private gate and you are at once in the typically Gascon town of Condom - rich in history, ancient buildings, museums and Roman artifacts. It is dominated by the magnificent cathedral of Saint-Pierre and bisected by the River Baîse, still with the quays once used to load barges with Armagnac brandy en route to Bordeaux. Restaurants and cafes abound to suit all tastes and pockets.
What makes this Apartment unique
Of great benefit, and one which we increasingly appreciate, is living in the town. Apart from the obvious advantage of being able to walk to the shops, market, post office, bank, doctor, dentist, cafés, restaurants and cinema, we are very conscious of the advantages of being on mains water, sewage and gas - something we took for granted in England but only available in the towns here.

Great apartment, super hosts and an excellent base for exploring the region.
We were 4 adults and spent 5 days in the Cathedral apartment. It was a perfect choice for us - spacious and very well equipped. The hosts were most gracious and respectful of our privacy. They made sure that we had everything we needed to be comfortable - we did not need any extras because the place was so well stocked. There is a lovely pool which is especially welcoming on a very hot afternoon. The apartment is well located within the town and an excellent location for discovering a part of France about which we knew nothing. Highly recommend this rental.
Un petit coin de paradis
Accueil chaleureux et propriété paradisiaque. Appartement cosy et très fonctionnel. Le jardin pour accéder à la piscine est fleuri et très calme. Un petit coin de paradis en plein centre ville.
The nearest beach, on France's Atlantic coast, is at Mimizan Plage. It's around 2 hours drive by car. Biarritz and the Arcachon basin are each around 3 hours drive.
From Calais, the drive is around 9.5 hours, and from St Malo, 7 hours. The nearest airports to Condom are Pau, (Ryanair) 1.5 hrs, Toulouse, (Easyjet, Flybe, BA) 1.5 hrs, Bordeaux, (BA) between 1.5 - 2hrs, and Bergerac, Biarritz and Carcassonne, 2 - 2.5hrs (all served by Ryanair) There are also excellent rail links to the capital, Auch, via TGV to Agen, or via Toulouse if approaching from the south.
The town name 'Condom' is derived from 'Condatomagus', meaning 'old gallic market'. Condom lies on the river BaIse along one of the main pilgrimage routes of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. Because of its location on the river BaIse, in the 19th century Condom became the capitol of the Ténarèze region and the access gate to the Armagnac. The river Baise is nowadays still very well suited for all kinds of boating trips. At the Capitainerie in the small harbour you can even rent a boat yourself. Canoeing excursions can be booked a little bit further upstream in Beaucaire.
There are many delightful places to visit in and around Condom: the Armagnac museum as well as the Cathedral St. Pierre are almost mandatory (and only a short walk from La Petite Gensac Apartments). A stroll through the weekly market (on wednesdays) is also a great delight for all senses. For those who prefer more physical pursuits, tennis, horse-riding, swimming, fishing and golf are all available nearby. There are also some wonderful walks along the Pilgrim Route to Compstela, and you might meet some interesting pilgrims along the way, as this route is still widely used for this purpose.
Book a boat trip on the river and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings along the river. Believed by many to be one of France's loveliest regions, the Gers is even more delightful when viewed in this manner. You can gaze out onto fields of golden sunflowers, vineyards, woodland and pastureland, and sip your Armagnac as you go.
The town of Condom also hosts an international music festival every year, and this proves very popular with the local people and visitors alike. Chess fans will be delighted to know that Condom is the venue for not just an international festival of the game, but also hosts a chess marathon!
