About Jana and Tom Stotler
Tom and Jana moved to Puerto Viejo in 2010 to pursue their dream of living in Costa Rica. They fell in love with the beautiful, laid back town of Puerto Viejo where the diversity of cultures has made everyday a learning experience. Jana was originally from Wyoming and moved to Colorado in her late 30's while Tom spent most of his life in the Denver, Colorado and surrounding mountains area.
Jana and Tom Stotler purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Jana and Tom Stotler chose Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
We chose Puerto Viejo because we fell in love with the area the very first time we came here. In fact, we actually bought our home on our first visit. We had been to Costa Rica many times before but there was just something magical about this place and we decided this is where we belonged.
What makes this Cottage unique
We can sit in our outdoor living room and watch and photograph all sorts of wildlife including sloths and birds. The beautiful garden is peaceful and we find it very relaxing to work in the garden and watch the progress of all of our plants and trees.

The most beautiful house and the hosts are the most considerate and kind and thoughtful people! I’ve truly never had an experience as wonderful as this staying anywhere else. 6 out of 5 stars if I could! A cute sloth just feet from the front door, privacy in the lush jungle, across the street from the beach, fabulous local cuisine, etc. Anything you need for your stay, Jana and Tom will take care of you. Geckos, birds, and howler monkeys are your neighbors. We had such a unique and fantastic experience and I cannot stress this enough, the most amazing hosts!
Thank you so much Lainey and Nick! You were such wonderful guests. Come back anytime!!
A jungle hideaway, close to it all
Casita Allegre provides a perfect home base to explore the lively little town of Puerto Viejo, beautiful beaches and the Caribbean adventures beyond. The cabin is beautifully designed and constructed. It feels very private, from relaxing on the porch with our morning coffee to enjoying the symphony of jungle animals and hammering thunderstorms overnight. Yet we also appreciated being right next door to Jana and Tom, who generously answered questions and offered tips and advice. Tom is truly invested in helping guests have a special experience!
The Playa Negra area is lovely, and very accessible to town during the day. The only (minor) downside for us was needing to take cabs at night, as walking alongside the highway in the dark would not be safe.
People in Puerto Viejo were friendly, welcoming and proud to share their culture. Highlights included hiking in Cahuita National Park, kayaking in a nearby river, touring Caribeans chocolate farm and the Jaguar Rescue Center, rafting the Pacuare River, eating delicious meals at Madre Tierra and Casita de Monli ... and so much more. For any fellow fitness fanatics who want to work out during vacation, we highly recommend Caribbean Fitness Center - a friendly indoor-outdoor gym where you’re guaranteed to sweat buckets!
Great place to stay. So peaceful and quiet.
We had an amazing time in Puerto Viejo and loved staying in the casita. We enjoyed the beautiful beaches that were all close by. Tom was a wonderful host and provided great information and ideas of things to do during our stay.
We will definitely be back!
This is the perfect place to stay to enjoy all the activities of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, then be able to retreat to a quiet secluded place just outside of the hubbub of Puerto Viejo. The proximity of surrounding vegetation of the rain forest made you oblivious to any neighbours, feeling like you were alone.
Tom and Jana were the perfect hosts, attending to every detail to make this a thoroughly enjoyable vacation. We had use of bicycles, boogie boards, beach chairs, even an iPhone, which came in handy because we don't have a cell phone. Our camera had quit on us before arriving so that we could still take pictures, on top of using it for navigation. Tom even got us a couple of fresh caught snappers then prepared the barbeque to make this the best meal we had on our 3-week trip. I can't say enough about how accommodating and attentive he was to make sure that we were not lacking for anything.
You need not look any further for the best place to stay in the Cahuita/Puerto Viejo area.
We stayed all over Costa Rica on our vacation and we’re looking forward to this place the most. It was the last stop on our trip and it was everything we wished for. Tom was great with answering questions and checking us in. There were so many amenities and the bed was super comfy. The casita is equipped with everything you need, even beach equipment. We enjoyed making ourselves breakfast and sitting on the deck with our coffee in the mornings. We didn’t see the sloth in the tree until the last day, but it was nice to see him at all (:
We loved this casita and would love to come back
Beautiful Costa Rican charm
We loved this bungalow! And Tom is a wonderful host! Checked in on us every day and was a wealth of information on any questions we had! Thank for making our stay so enjoyable!
Casita Alegre is located in a lush rain forest setting approximately four to five hours from San Jose by car. Wildlife is abundant and bird watching is among the most outstanding in the world. In our yard alone we have photographed over 120 different species. Puerto Viejo is a funky little town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica and is a diverse and eclectic place to relax and hang out.
PLEASE NOTE: If your flight arrives in the afternoon (or leaves in the morning) we recommend that you either stay overnight in San Jose or contact us to arrange for a private van to pick you up at the airport and bring you to Casita Alegre.
