A beautiful, spacious, 3rd floor, one-bedroom apartment located within Marina Village, on the waterfront, in the heart of historic Olhao. This modern, newly furnished, air-conditioned apartment has a large balcony where you can sit and enjoy the stunning, uninterrupted views of the ocean and Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. There is a pool on the rooftop where you can enjoy a 360-degree view over the town of Olhao, the marina, and across to the sandspit islands of Armona and Culatra with their beautiful white, sandy beaches. These ihlas are easily reached by ferries that run from the quayside, just a short walk away, along the pleasant, paved promenade. A wealth of restaurants, shops and bars can be found along the waterfront and in the winding, cobbled back streets, all within walking distance. Olhao has a daily market where you can buy freshly caught fish and seafood, and locally grown fruit and vegetables.

About The Owner

We live in North Wales and first holidayed in the Eastern Algarve in 2007. We love it here, with the relaxing pace of life, the friendly people, the beautiful beaches and the all-year-round sun. The flight to Faro is only two and a half hours for us, and then from the airport it's a 15 minute drive to Olhao. If we catch an 8.00 am flight we can be here by lunchtime. When we had the chance to buy this lovely waterfront apartment here, with such a stunning view of the ocean and nature reserve, we couldn’t resist it.

Why The Owner chose Olhao

We consider this area of the Algarve to be largely unspoilt by tourism. Although Olhao is a tourist destination it retains its charm as it is still very much a traditional Portuguese fishing town. The restaurants here have lovely, fresh food and wine at very reasonable prices, whereas many other holiday destinations have become expensive, especially to eat out. We love taking the ferry to the sandspit islands of Armona or Culatra; it is like stepping back in time, wandering past the pretty beach houses that line the paths to the beautiful white sandy beaches. There are no cars there and the beaches are never crowded, even in high season. The countryside inland is beautiful and we have spent many days exploring the various tiny hilltop villages where time seems to have stood still.

What makes this apartment unique

All the restaurants, cafe-bars, shops, markets and banks are within a short walk of the apartment, yet at the same time, it is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the main street in Olhao, so you have the best of both worlds.

You can chill out on the balcony, or in the rooftop pool after a day of sightseeing. The fact that only a few of the apartments in the building have access to this pool is definitely a bonus. The views and sunsets from our balcony are breathtaking; the only downside is having to tear ourselves away from the view when it is time to return home to the UK. After all, there are not many places you get the chance to see pink flamingoes whilst you are eating your breakfast..

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is fully air-conditioned, with heating available for the winter months. All windows are double glazed with electric blackout shutters. Sorry, no pets or smoking permitted in the apartment. The set up of the apartment makes it unsuitable for young children, i.e, below the age of 7, due to health and safety reasons. Free wi-fi connection is available in the apartment. Outside: The large balcony has a table and 4 comfortable chairs where you can enjoy alfresco dining or a refreshing drink in the evening, whilst watching the sun set. There are also 2 sun beds and a parasol. With an incredible view over the ocean and the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve - a bird twitcher's paradise - you may even be lucky enough to see the pink flamingos in their nesting habitat. The rooftop pool is for guests only, shared between a select few apartments. Utility Room: Separate drying area, just off kitchen, with iron, ironing board and clothes airer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Price includes final clean and laundry. Ample towels (not beach towels) and linen are provided. For stays of 2 weeks or more the price also includes clean laundry every week, unless a long winter let; please ask for more details. Other: Balcony. Fantastic Stay

We were incredibly lucky that the weather was amazing for the whole 10 days of our stay which certainly contributed to the fantastic time we had. The apartment is perfect, great views, good facilities and well placed between the town and all its facilities and Lidl, other supermarkets and even MacDonald's!. The wifi was great, also the appliances in the kitchen were of excellent quality. We knew to take shampoo etc so it wasn't an issue but hand soap was provided. The information provided in the apartment was helpful. We absolutely loved Olhao and would definitely go back. We hired a car which was very reasonable and we went from East, to West and North visiting some lovely places, eg. Sagres, Monchique, Loule, Vila Real de Santo Antonio and even in to Spain. Glad we got a car with a transponder as it took any issues with the toll road away. Got the train to Faro which was a doddle and a boat trip round the islands was great. Markets in the town were amazing and to have fresh fruit that tasted of what they should do was fantastic. The restaurant recommendations in the book were good and we went to restaurante Prazeres 4 times as the fish was so good and great value for money. All in all a pretty perfect holiday. The apartment and the provision of information from Julia the owner and the company who manage it couldn't be faulted. We really hope to go back as I don't think it is a place you would ever tire of.

Exelent place to stay

It's was very nice lovely view and close to town, one km to the train or bus easy to get to several other towns, overall our stay was 100 percent.

Good Location, Has All you need

Rained all week but other than that everything close to hand. Apartment was very clean and had all you needed for self catering.

I would suggest new kitchen knives (We left a sharpener) and a new shower head.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were unhappy with the knives and the showerhead in the apartment. We were not aware of this, so we appreciate your feedback and will take action to replace these. However, I do wish you had raised these issues with our property managers, who would have efficiently replaced these at the time. They are there to assist guests with any issues they may have with the apartment during their stay.

Great week in Julia's apartment

Lovely week in this splendid apartment, great views and close to town. Facilities excellent good Samsung telly with English channels and very good WiFi.Kitchen easy to use and plenty of pans etc. We recommend Dorkas at the rear of the fish market for coffee and cocktails and O Bote and Terra I Mar restaurants for food both of which are a 5-10 min walk. We would come again without a doubt.

Great Location

A superb location for Olhao town and a great base for sight seeing. The apartment overlooks the salt marshes and you can relax enjoy the sunshine on the balcony watching the locals and birds activities. It is so well placed for the old town and the fresh fish and fruit markets are absolutely superb. The Mars rep was very efficient on showing us around the apartment and was available if we had issues( The toaster needed replacing and she did this the same day). The apartment itself is large clean and very modern, the downside is that the beds are extremely hard and there were no cleaning products left for us to ensure that we left the place as we found it. Other rental properties we have used always provide a welcome basket to get you started and some items such as cooking oil and herbs to ensure a good stay - there was nothing at all in the apartment. Having said that Lidl is just down the road. This would certainly make the rating 5 star if provided.

Special interest holidays:

The apartment overlooks the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and the sea. The bird life on view is amazing - a bird twitcher's paradise!

Coast/Beach:

The unspoilt, white sandy beaches and clear waters of the offshore sandpit islands of Ilha da Armona and Ilha da Culatra are easily reached by ferries that run from the quayside, at the eastern end of Olhao's waterfront. Armona is the closest to Olhao and has a few cafes/restaurants. Ihla do Farol, where the lighthouse is, at the western end of Culatra, also has a beautiful sandy beach and a few cafes. All of the beaches hold the EEC blue flag. Many other sandy beaches can be reached by car.

Travel:

Faro Airport is 14 km away, approximately a 15-minute drive. Trains and buses run between Faro and Olhao. Olhao bus and train stations are both within walking distance of the apartment. A taxi from the airport is around €20-25. Car hire is not essential as the apartment is so conveniently located for all amenities, including the ferries to the offshore islands.

Distances:

All amenities and necessities can be found in Olhao including supermarkets, banks, restaurants and the new Ria Shopping mall. Faro is approximately 9km away, where you will find the large Algarve Forum shopping mall. The picturesque town of Tavira is approximately 22km away. Further afield is the Spanish border which is approximately a 45 minute drive along the motorway.

Further Details:

Olhao is a traditional Portuguese fishing town, full of character with its Moorish-style houses and winding, cobbled back streets. In the heart of the historic town you will find graceful buildings with wrought iron balconies, carved stonework and decorative tiled exteriors. At the centre of the town is the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosario, built in 1698 with contributions from the fishermen. It is an elegant building with a baroque facade. Olhao is well known for its fish market; there are two market buildings on the waterfront where you will find a vast and diverse choice of fresh fish and seafood, along with locally grown fruit and vegetables. These market halls are surrounded by pavement cafes where you can sit and enjoy the view of the boats moored along the waterfront.

The Natural Park of Ria Formosa encompasses 60 km of coast between Ancao and Manta Rota. It is a vital area for birds, especially waterfowl, and the park was included in the list of wetlands of worldwide interest defined by the Ramsar Convention. You can observe the wildlife from hides dotted around the Natural Park.

Boat trips are run around the Ria Formosa, or you can hire a boat yourself.

Olhao Seafood Festival takes place in August (usually around the 2nd week). It's one of the biggest gastronomy festivals in the Algarve with plenty of delicious seafood and live entertainment every night. Apart from the daily fresh markets in Olhao there are plenty of other markets to visit in the surrounding areas, including Fuzeta, Montcarapacho and Quelfes.

The unspoilt riverside town of Tavira is worth a visit and is only a short drive away, or you can catch a train or bus there. This lovely, historical town has the Rio Gilao running through its centre which is spanned by a Roman bridge. Faro is only a short drive or bus/train journey away, where you can wander around the ancient walled town and harbour.
