Recently restored farmhouse in a beautiful rural location with secluded, sheltered courtyard, a private swimming pool and large terraces. A separate terrace offers the ideal situation for al fresco dining. Situated in a rural location in the heart of the Gascony countryside, Maison Lajus is an ideal setting for a peaceful relaxing holiday, or a centre for exploring the local vineyards (Madiran, Jurancon, Cotes de Gascogne) the majestic Pyrenees Mountains or the dramatic beaches of St Jean De Luz, Biarittz, Hossegor & further north to the Dune du Pilat. The property is within 45 minutes of Lourdes & on a minor route of the pilgrim's trail. The Tour de France is often routed within one mile of the house & many guests participate in the open event. The beautiful city of Pau, again only 45 minutes drive is famous for the oldest golf course in Europe as well as motor & equestrian events, Marciac for Jazz festivals, Plaisance, Eauze & Aire sur L'Adour all inside 30 miles.

About Sue Coverdale

Hi,

Graham and Sue are delighted to welcome you to our special little piece of France. We bought the properties in Spring 2006 & have been, updating, modernising and renovating, first Maison Lajus & more recently the old 17 century farmhouse.

We added the swimming pool in 2010 & are developing a garden & wildlife area within the acre of land.

Graham worked in the UK as a Wine Merchant for many years, prior to this he was a trained chef & hotel manager, he was excited to semi retire to France mid 2014. Sue works part-time as a freelance accountant & has been in France since October 2014.

We look forward to offering wine tours & occasional catering to our guests which we hope will enhance the already relaxing atmosphere in this picturesque part of France.

Why Sue Coverdale chose Pyrenees-Atlantiques

We looked for several years to purchase a property in France for holidays & retirement.

We had many happy family holidays in France & Graham spent time visiting wineries & sourcing wine for the UK market during his thirty five year career in wine.

Our requirements were a house with a garden, to be able to enjoy the four seasons, clear days in winter, some cold & frost but not damp & dark. Bright spring days, sunny summer & beautiful autumn colours. We wanted green grass, rolling countryside for walking, deciduous trees, a rural location but close to towns, cities & transport links & within a living wonder it took us so long to find our dream.

When we walked through the gates of Maison Lajus we realised we had found everything we'd been searching for.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The property is so quiet it's lovely to sleep with windows & shutters open to enjoy the fresh air & night skies.

The house is furnished as a home from home, we hope you will find everything you need to enjoy your stay.

"relaxing rural idyll"

Maison Lajus suited our needs perfectly. Set in rolling countryside, the house was comfortable and well appointed, the pool was crystal clear and just large enough for a game of water basketball (as invented there by our children). We had only booked a week there but would happily have stayed for a second. Kay and Neil were great guides to the local area. We would definitely recommend a trip to the Cirque de Gavarnie and the Coll de Tourmalet. Fantastic clear skies at night for star watching too.

A lovely relaxed holiday in April

Had a lovely time here in the Madiran area. Made very welcome by Graham and Sue and their dog Hari. The house was well-equipped with lots of rooms when children and grand-children came to stay, and good wifi and television when the weather wasn't so good. The owners were always ready to help, guiding us to the best markets and restaurants. We would strongly recommend Maison Lajus.

Wonderful Christmas in Luc Armau

We stayed for over two weeks for Christmas and New Year 2015 in Luc Armau. The house and the location are wonderful. Very quiet, away from the main road traffic, and a very well equipped house. Graham and Sue were ever so lovely and fantastic hosts. They provided us with all we needed in the kitchen and great guidance for things to do in the area. The house was clean, spacious and homely. Shame it was winter and did not use the swimming pool:) We love walking and I am a keen runner. There are many lovely walks and things to do on the door step, as well as more city like activities in the close by city of Pau. Lovely holiday. We would like to go and stay anytime in the future.

Fantastic relaxing break

The property is exactly as described with the added extra of being extremely clean and comfortable with plenty of room for all 7 of us. The house had everything we needed. Fantastic location, very peaceful with a great array of wildlife to see if you take the time to just sit, watch and wait. The night sky is amazing without the light pollution. The nearest village was only a few minutes drive with enough shops to get everything we needed. We didn't use the pool as we stayed in winter, but it looked great. Lots of places around to visit. The owners were absolutely lovely. Nothing was to much trouble. On hand for anything anytime but never intrusive. Would love to go back and will certainly be recommending to family and friends.

Country house near the Pyrenees

We loved this property- we found it met all our expectations from the details as listed in the description, it was clean and well maintained and in a very good location. The (English) caretakers were very helpful and gave us lots of advice and ideas on what to see and where to go for a meal out. The owners gave us lots of information about the surrounding area and a good route to drive down from the ferry port. We enjoyed doing a lot of sightseeing in the region and also went to Spain a couple of times, and when we just wanted to relax, the swimming pool was wonderful! I would certainly recommend this property, with no reservations.

Further Details:

Lembeye is on the wine trail with many local producers of Madiran and Cotes de Gascogne wines. Armagnac is also produced in the region. The area is famous for its cuisine, with much use of the local duckling. There are several pretty towns on the banks of the Adour river which takes the melting snows of the Pyrenees to the Atlantic. The mountains offer spectacular walks in summer, with Europe's highest train at Artouste (May - October). You can marvel at the Col de Tourmalet which provides one of the toughest stages on the Tour de France, and follow the old smugglers trail into Spain over the Pont d'Espagne.

Pau is a lively city with hypermarkets, excellent shops, many fine restaurants, and a casino. There is an historic Grand Prix round the streets of Pau et the end of May (Pau hosted the first ever Grand Prix) and a superb steeplechase racecourse.

Booking Notes:
In the first instance please contact by email to confirm availability. Bookings between October and April will incur a fuel surcharge of £35 per week. £250 refundable security deposit is required and will be held with Owners Direct until after your stay, it will be returned to you by Owners Direct approximately seven days after your stay once the property has been checked for damage and left in a satisfactory condition. 25% of the value of your stay is required on booking, the balance is payable 60 days before your holiday commences. Discounts available for multiple weeks & low season under occupancy.

Changeover Day:
We prefer changeover day on Saturdays, but are prepared to be flexible if the property is available.

Notes on prices:
Electricity surcharge of £35 per week will be payable for bookings between October and April.
For 14 night lets there is a discount of £150 from the listed prices.
We are happy to offer two person discounts for holidays taken during September to November

Outside: The house is set in an acre of meadow, and has a patio with outdoor table and chairs to seat 8. The pool terrace has sun loungers & sun shade. The pool is 23sqm with small jacuzzi jets in the steps & small wave jet in the pool. It has a large surrounding terrace ideal for sunbathing. The meadow is accessed through gates from courtyard, we are developing a small garden & have planted cherry & fig trees. Plums & walnuts are established & we welcome guests to pick fruit to enjoy during their stay. Utility Room: Pool House has washing machine, second fridge freezer, sink unit, changing room for pool use with shower, basin & WC. Dryer, airer, iron & ironing board are also provided. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All guest towels, bath mats, pool towels, bed linen, kitchen linen are included & changed weekly. A welcome pack is also included. Interim changes & additional services can be arranged if advance notice is given. Other: All rooms enjoy lovely views & windows can be opened to enjoy the country air. Fans are provided to cool the rooms in summer should guests prefer. Downstairs the floors are mosaic marble & original quarry tiles, upstairs are hardwood. Rugs are available.
