Family and Dog Friendly Holiday Cottages with Lovely Views, Close to Beaches

Our six holiday cottages nestle in the 20 acre valley of Dittiscombe, a peaceful and private haven with a diverse landscape, managed by us soley for the enjoyment of our guests. Formerly a South Hams farm for several hundred years, the stone barns have now been sympathetically renovated and are individually decorated and furnished. There are thick stone walls and exposed beams, feature fireplaces and woodburners, providing a homely setting all year round. Each cottage has a private garden with lawn, flower and shrub borders, gravel patio, garden furniture, and lovely views. Guests have direct access to our conservation valley with woodlands, meadows, ponds and streams.

We are dog friendly with plenty of open space surrounding us for walkies on site. We have a children's play area with swings, slide, climbing wall and picnic table. We are close to the historic village of Slapton and 2 good dogs welcome pubs, the beautiful beaches of Start Bay, the South West Coast Path which offers great walking, and the nature reseve at Slapton Ley. The towns of Salcombe, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes are also closeby.

All our cottages have free Wifi.

Willows cottage, dog friendly, sleeps 6, with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. It has a large enclosed, south-facing garden with views of the valley. It has connecting gates to Honeysuckle and Rafters cottages.Up to 2 dogs welcome in this cottage.

Rafters Cottage, dog friendly, sleeps 4, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. It has an enclosed south-facing level garden, open plan ground floor, and double room and a twin room. Connecting gate to Willows cottage. Up to 2 dogs welcome in this cottage.

Buddleia Cottage, dog friendly, sleeps 4, with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom. It has a large, private enclosed garden with direct access to the meadows and orchard. One double room, one twin room. Open plan sitting, dining and kitchen area.Woodburner. Connecting gate to Dovecote cottage. Up to 2 dogs welcome in this cottage.

Dovecote Cottage, dog friendly, sleeps 4, with 2 bedrooms.and 1 bathroom. A two-tier garden one of gravel with seating, one higher garden with picnic table and lovely views of the valley and orchard. Separate sitting room, woodburner. connecting gate to Buddleia cottage. Up to 2 dogs welcome in this cottage. Short breaks available - please check on our own website booking system.

Honeysuckle Cottage, dog friendly, sleeps 2 in 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom. Detached single storey cottage with views over the valley and pond. Suitable for guests with limited mobility. Enclosed garden with seating. Kingsize bed, woodburner. Connecting gate to Willows cottage. 1 dog welcome in this cottage.

The Owlery Cottage, pet free, sleeps 2 in 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom. Set in the higher valley of Dittiscombe with views of the hills and pond. Kingsize bed, bathroom with large spa bath big enough for two people, woodburner, private parking space. This is a pet free cottage.

Buddleia has an open-plan ground floor with a sitting room area featuring a woodburner with brick fireplace, bookshelves, settle, digital TV, DVD player, Ipod player with FM radio, sofa, chairs and coffee tables; the dining area has a circular table and chairs; and the kitchen area, with slate flooring, is fully equipped with ceramic hob, electric oven, and microwave. There is a storage heater and convector heater on the ground floor. The downstairs bathroom has a shower cubicle, toilet, vanity unit and electric fan heater.

Upstairs the main bedroom has a kingsize bed and armchair, and view over the garden. The second bedroom has two single beds. Both bedrooms have night storage heaters.

There is a rockery and curved stone steps leading the the stable-style front door. The sheltered and private garden is enclosed by high hedges and fencing, with picnic table and chairs, is to the side of the cottage, and direct access to the orchard and meadows.

About Ruth & Jon Saunders

Originally from East Sussex, we made a life-style change from hectic lives in publishing and property management to our tranquil valley in the glorious South Hams. We had visited South Devon many times on holiday, and it always felt like we were in the best place in the world. We thought it would be a wonderful area to bring up our young family, so in 1998 we were lucky enough to find Dittiscombe farmhouse with six cottages and 20 acres of land.

Seventeen years and lots of hard work and commitment later we have a thriving holiday cottage business in a very special place!

Why Ruth & Jon Saunders chose South Hams

The land surrounding the farmhouse and cottages was originally farmed but we are interested in wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. So over the years the valley has been sensitively managed and planted and now provides a wildlife haven, home to many diverse species of animals and plants, which is very much at the heart of the business.

Guests have exclusive use of the valley, nature walk, ponds, meadows and woodland trails which they can access from their cottage gardens.

We live in the farmhouse so are on hand to help guests and answer questions. Ruth will also take visiting children on the Dittiscombe wildlife detective trail on request.

Also, we love dogs! We have a wonderful rescued collie called Kes, and we welcome guests with dogs in five of our six cottages.

What makes this cottage unique

We are surrounded by the rolling hills of South Devon, and are just a 10 minute drive to the unspoilt beaches of Start Bay and the South West Coast Path. We have a green lane walk from our farmhouse door to Slapton village which has two excellent pubs, a small village store plus the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve which is great for birdwatching.

We are in a central location within the South Hams area as Kingsbridge, Totnes, Salcombe and Dartmouth are no more than 30 minutes drive away, and each town has its own unique qualities.

A gorgeous gem

This is the loveliest place to stay. Ruth and Jon are the most welcoming hosts to this group of holiday cottages set in a fantastic location: from leaving a welcoming tea tray for your arrival to knowledge of the walks and sights to see nearby. The cottage has everything you will need for a "get away from it all " break. A cosy wood burner , comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen complete the perfect time : you may never want to go home!! Dogs are welcome and your own garden make it safe for pets and children . We have stayed in nearly all of Dittiscombe cottages , returning year after year to this lovely place . Once you visit , you will too. Highly recommended .

Tranquility Base

We arrived for another holiday at this excellent location but regrettably this time without our labrador. He was the reason we discovered this wonderful place over 10 years ago and we have been coming back once or twice a year ever since to recharge our batteries and enjoy the local cuisine. Their are some excellent pubs and restaurants in the area and the owners, Jon & Ruth are most helpful in advising good places to see and where to eat. However if you fancy a 'night in' the kitchen is well equiped for cooking anything you wish. Corkscrews provided, of course!

It is wonderful and safe for dogs and children with lovely walks on your doorstep.

The cottages are comfortable and clean and have excellent facilities. My wife and I really enjoy the log burner on a chilly autumnal evening.

Our children had a wonderful time on the local beaches and enjoyed going to see the old tank at Slapton Ley, flying their kites on the beach and great fish and chips afterwards at the famous Start Bay Inn at Torcross.

I enjoy testing the binoculars on the wildlife and birds at Dittiscombe.

Another restful break and we are planning another next year.

South Hams boasts many of the finest and most unspoilt beaches in the country. For families there is great choice: sheltered coves and fine sand at Mill Bay or Hope Cove, or the sweeping, safe beach with the award-winning Venus Cafe at Blackpool Sands; rock-pooling at Thurlestone; surfing on the magnificent beach at Bantham; and for visitors with dogs there are many beaches to explore all year round at Slapton, Torcross and Beesands, East Prawle, Rickham Sands and many more.

Travel:

Nearest airport Exeter International, approx 40 km, and Bristol International Airport, approx. 90km. Mainline train station at Totnes (approx. 18km) with services from London Paddington, Plymouth and Penzance. Taxi service from Totnes station costs approx. £20. The use of a car is recommended, but local car hire companies can be suggested on request.

Nearest village of Slapton is 2 miles, approx a 50 minute walk, and we supply a map for guests. Slapton has a small shop and 2 dog-friendly pubs. Beach at Slapton Sands 2.5 miles. We have a live online booking facility taking credit and debit card payments via our website.

We are dog friendly and take up to 2 dogs in each cottage, depending on time of year. We charge £25 per dog per week.

National Trust properties at Greenway (Agatha Christie's house and garden on the river Dart) approx 10 miles, and at Coleton Fishacre at Kingswear, approx 14 miles.

South West Coast Path starts just 2.5 miles from Dittiscombe - head north towards Dartmouth, south and west towards Salcombe. Fabulous views, beaches and small coves to explore.

Excellent local food at Tradesmans Arms in Stokenham, Cricket Inn at Beesands, Fortescue Arms in East Allington. The Seahorse Restaurant, head chef Mitch Tonks, in Dartmouth.

Notes on accommodation: We have 4 other cottages sleeping 2 - 4 guests. We are dog friendly here and accept 2 dogs in Willows, Buddleia, Rafters and Dovecote, and 1 dog in Honeysuckle. We recommend wonderful dog-friendly walks nearby, many of the beaches and pubs also welcome dogs, and supply specialist walking books and a bag of 'dog goodies'. We provide free Wifi in all the cottages. Also we have digital TVs, Ipod players with FM radio and DVD players in all cottages. Weekly availability, short breaks and special offers: You can check live availability on our own website and make direct bookings using debit or credit cards. Outside: Our cottages and farmhouse are located at the end of a long lane, surrounded by a private valley, and overlooked by no-one. The gardens have lovely views of Dittiscombe's private conservation valley which is managed and maintained for the enjoyment of our guests. We can provide barbecues on request. With such a diverse landscape our valley has an abundance of wildlife. There is a large network of Devon hedgerows, 3 ponds and a spring-fed stream, a woodland of mixed deciduous trees, and eight acres of grassland, which provide diverse habitats for a variety of birds and insects. Many previous guests have enjoyed spotting our visiting and resident birds such as skylarks, pied-wagtails, little owl, long-tailed tits, snipe, moorhen, kestrels and sparrowhawks.
