The ocean views from all areas of the house are spectacular, with dolphins and whales swimming directly beneath the house.
On warm days, fling open all the doors and windows and invite the outside in.
On cool days, play games or read around a wood burning fireplace.
All spaces are tastefully and luxuriously furnished and appointed.
Situated in a protected nature reserve perched high on the cliffs and surrounded by forest, fynbos and ocean, these villas are the perfect getaway for those seeking peace and tranquility. Designed by a multi-award winning architect, the houses blend perfectly with the surrounding landscape in a combination of light, glass, wood and space. Luxuriously and tastefully furnished, all rooms have beautiful views; watch whales and dolphins from the sea facing decks or bird watch from the fynbos deck. Fynbos or Cape Floral Kingdom has the highest density of plants in the world and attracts a myriad of bird and animal life, which can be enjoyed from all areas of the houses. Enjoy numerous walking trails that wind through the nature reserve where wildlife including antelope, zebra, karakul, porcupine and bush pig roam. Ballots Bay where the river meets the sea, is a fisherman’s paradise and is perfect for exploring and foraging.
Villa 24 has 3 bedrooms en suite all with beautiful views. Large open plan living / dining / kitchen, all with spectacular views. Drink sundowners on the sea deck with sweeping views of ocean, forest and cliffs.
Villa 8 has 2 luxurious bedrooms en suite with spectacular ocean views. Positioned directly on the cliffs, whales come in to calve so close you can hear them. Huge pods of dolphin swim past daily. Painted white, this villa has a contemporary feel with beautiful fabrics and exceptional quality linen, kitchen utensils and finishes.
There are many walks in the nature reserve that wind through fynbos and forest, along cliffs, down to rock pools and to the pebbly bay where the Meulen river enters the sea. You can barbecue at the bay or in a magical clearing in the forest.
I am a television producer / director who loves nature, open spaces and travel. Six years ago, I married architect Henry Paine and together we decided to change our lives and leave the frantic pace of city life in Johannesburg and move to live in paradise on the Garden Route where Henry has designed our beautiful Cliff Top Houses. Although our hearts lie in this exceptional part of the world, we fulfilled Henry's life-long dream and bought a sailing yacht in Greece which we sail around the Med each year for much of the European summer.
I fell in love with Ballots Heights Nature reserve 15 years ago when I came on holiday. From the moment I drove down the magical winding road through dense forest, over small rivers and through fynbos, I was captivated. I had never imagined a place could be so beautiful. I bought my first piece of this amazing nature reserve and commissioned world renowned architect, Peter Rich, to design my villa. As it is a protected nature reserve, we may only build in timber and natural materials. Peter created a villa that makes my stomach lurch every time I set foot in it! It not only sits beautifully in the environment, it enhances it. 6 years ago, Henry and I purchased the neighboring piece of land and Henry designed and built another villa - if anything even more beautiful than the first with views that take your breath away. In 2015 we built the 3rd villa in the Cliff Top House stable, which is a contemporary masterpiece of glass, clean lines, white painted wood and spectacular views of the ocean and cliffs.
The villas are unique, both in their contemporary wooden design but mostly in their position surrounded by expansive ocean, dramatic cliffs, indigenous forest and fynbos. You feel as if you are a million miles from traffic, noise and frenetic city life - and yet we are only 25 minutes from George airport and 15 minutes from shops, restaurants, pristine beaches, world-renowned golf courses, exceptional hiking trails and extreme adventure activities.
Changeover flexible. Minimum booking low season - 3 nights; high season 1 week. Arrival time 2pm. Departure time 10h00am.
Our recent stay at Cliff Top House No. 24 was absolutely wonderful, and a highlight of our two week holiday in South Africa. The home is stunning and even more special than the photos can convey. The master bedroom and bath are so lovely that words won't do justice to them; we spent hours on the balcony overlooking the forest and the sea; the kitchen is well equipped; and beds comfortable for a great night's sleep. We hiked up through the adjacent "magical forest" on our first day, and were delighted to come across three zebras (including a baby) just as we came onto the plains. Sally and her husband were wonderful hosts; communication at all stages was prompt and easy, and they were at the home to meet us with a chilled bottle of wine. All in all, we had a wonderful stay and the only complaint is that it was way too short; hoping we can get away for a longer stretch on a next visit to soak in all of the wonderful views and comforts of the home.
We spent 8 days at Sally & Henry's house for our 40th wedding anniversary. It is a magical area and property that exceeded our expectation. They provided assistance in helping with supplies and familiarity with the Garden Route. It has everything you need for a relaxing vacation included some nice hiking trails. It is also a convenient location for 10 highly rated golf courses. We will be back to stay longer and to explore the area.
I spent a few days on the garden route and used this house as a ?base camp? and it's probably the best base camp in the world. The location is great with a 20 min drive to George or Wilderness, but the essence of the place is its location within Ballots Heights on top of the cliff with uninterrupted sea views (which was awesome for a city boy like me!). Sally and Henry are fantastic hosts and it was useful to have them next door giving hints and tips (and to start the odd fire in the stove). My only regret was not having enough time... but it leaves a reason to go again!
It was an adventure getting to the place and not for the faint hearted although bring disconnected from the outside world and being one with nature was fantastic we seen a variety of birds, ostriches and a very rare genet. The owners and in particular the house keeper were so accommodating it was unreal. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and could not have wished for a better place to stay for my 40th but to meet such wonderful people thank you for everything
