Apartment in Dinan, Cotes D'Armor / Brittany, France - Heart Of Historic Dinan

About Michael Scanlon
We have holidayed in France for many years and moved here in 2002 with our young children. The space, the empty roads, the welcoming locals, beautiful coastline and, of course, cuisine, were all strong reasons for the decision to make our home here.
Michael Scanlon purchased this Apartment in 2009
Why Michael Scanlon chose Dinan
Dinan is simply the most attractive and best-preserved medieval town in Brittany (and so close to the port of St Malo and 2 airports). The port is extremely pretty with various boat trips available, up and down stream, in the summer months. There is a good choice of riverside restaurants and cafes. The vast number of beaches between Dinard to Pleneuf Val Andre are stunning and never crowded. Mont St Michel is only a straightforward 35 minute drive away.
What makes this Apartment unique
The Apartment is in prime position in the heart of medieval Dinan, with public transport a few minutes' walk away and half a dozen excellent restaurants within 100 yards. It is great for people watching.

Location! Location! Location!
The old town of Dinan was just magical with something to see on every corner and our little apartment was right in the center of it. Wonderful just sitting by the windows in the afternoon watching all the people passing by and enjoying this beautiful town. Michael and Jane were fabulous with answering any questions we had and supplying us with maps and information. Our stay was perfect.
Central to all the action
The apartment is well equipt and relatively spacioius. It is central to everything situated above a busy square. You will certainly feel part of all the action. It is however not a quiet haven - activities usually don't wind down until around midnight and start again very early each morning. If you value your sleep this may not be the place for you...but having said that, We got used to it and had a lovely time in Dinan. Micheal was an attentive and responsive host, although we never actually met him, as he was away, communication was very clear and friendly.
holiday apartment, Dinan
The accommodation is quite basic but that is reflected in the price, which was very reasonable. It was clean and comfortable; the shower very good. Don't expect the feel of a 15th century apartment, that has been lost in renovation. The location, however, is utterly wonderful, in the heart of this extraordinary and perfect town. Highly recommended.
Lovely Dinan experience. Thank you Michael
My wife and I had a lovely short break in the heart of Dinan town centre. Faultless. Fab location and perfect accomodation. Thank you very much, would love to return.
Thanks Jeff for the kind review and also for leaving the apartment spotlessly clean! You are welcome to return any time.
Lovely apartment in great location
It would be difficult to be more centrally located in Dinan - there are plenty of shops, restaurants and creperies within a very short walk. Although the apartment is in a very old building it has been tastefully renovated with a cosy feel. Pretty much everything you need is provided, and eating in is definitely feasible - and can be a relief after a French lunch! We only stayed for a long weekend, but it was the sort of apartment that would be very comfortable for a longer stay. Wifi would have been nice, as picking up a signal from a nearby bar didn't always work. The owner sent us helpful information about parking in Dinan, which meant we managed never to have to pay for parking, as well as other useful recommendations of places to visit and eat at. Very happy to have found this apartment.
Nice place. Helpful ahead of time. But frustrating intro.
First let me say the apartment was comfortable and roomy. And the host was very helpful ahead of time re: trip logistics. In the end we had a great stay.
But I also have to add how frustrating and stressful it was at the beginning.
The apartment is in a good locale and well appointed. Very clean. And the host really did help sort me on some confusing travel connections. So generally it was all good.
But we arrived very tired from a full day of travel to a strange town in an unfamiliar country. The host had sent a map and told us where to park but it was all incorrect. He told us of 2 free parking lots nearest to the apartment. Not only are they not free but they weren't even available - once gated for hotel guests only and the other signed for residents only with threat of tow. Left us driving around the crowded area of very confusing streets trying to find some alternative then dragging luggage up a steep hill on cobblestones trying to find the apartment in the warren that is Dinan. Exhausting. We got to the apartment late on a Sunday afternoon, when all grocery stores are closed, only to discover they didn't leave us any toilet paper but a few sheets at the end of a roll. Really? You don't provide toilet paper? Then I read the note in the apartment hoping to find suggestions for parking or food or something. Instead there are more incorrect instructions about more free parking that isn't free. And a note about taking out our own garbage and where to find the vacuum cleaner and to leave the place as clean as we find it. We always leave a place tidy but it almost seemed like they expected us to do the cleaning for the next folks (we did leave them toilet paper). I know the hosts were gone for the time we were there but they should leave someone available. Every other HomeAway we stayed in had someone to great us, etc..
Add to that no wifi, which really is needed by travellers.
Anyway, a night of rest and some food and a trip to the grocery fixed all and we had a nice stay. And in the end
I found out the password for a neighboring business and could get wifi at the windowsill. So great apartment but some bumps that need fixing. So I give it 4 stars but may be closer to 3 1/2.
It is unfortunate that you had problems parking on arrival. However, I did not promise 'free parking lots' for you , but, as follows:
"Free parking is outside the medieval walls and will mean a 350 yard walk from the best places (Rue de St Malo and Rue de Vergers, just outside 'Porte St Malo'."
Such street parking was affected by resurfacing works commencing shortly before your arrival (unknown to me) and which closed off the roads, regrettably.
I do, however, apologise for the absence of toilet paper at the apartment upon your arrival. It is the first time this has happened in eight years of rental and was an unfortunate omission.
Special interest holidays:
Historic interest. Dinan has a medieval history dating back to 12th century and it is renowned for being the best-preserved medieval citadel in Brittany, with ramparts dominating the skyline.
Beautiful and numerous beaches abound on the coast directly north of Dinan at Dinard, St Lunaire, St Cast, St Jacut, Lancieux, St Briac to name just a few. The nearest is but 20 mins away by car.
There is a regular, and ridiculously cheap, bus service from Dinan (200 metres from the apartment) to Dinard via lovely villages on the river Rance, such as Taden, St Samson sur Rance, Plouer sur Rance and La Richardais.
Car hire is not at all essential-there is a bus service from Pleurtuit (near Dinard airport which is 20 mins from the apartment and has routes from Stansted and East Midlands) to Dinan which would require a short taxi drive from the airport. Rennes airport (which is served by Flybe routes from Southampton, Dublin,Manchester,Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Manchester) is only 40 mins from Dinan.
St Malo port 25 mins. Caen & Roscoff ports 110 mins. Le Havre port 150 mins
Calais 5 hrs.
The apartment is in the heart of medieval Dinan and everything the town has to offer is within easy walking distance. The 'pleasure port' of Dinan can be reached in no time by walking down the historic cobbled Rue de Jerzual - the original centre of the trading port in the 13th century.
Two excellent restaurants are but a few yards away. Within 100 yards or so are gothic Eglise de St Malo and Basilica de St Sauveur.
