The larger town of Flers is 15 mins away (NE). Safe for small children. Lots of parking. Ideal central location, 1 hour south of Caen, 1 hour from seaside town of Granville and Mont St Michelle. Close to many golf courses and 'Suisse Normande' with adventure sports ideal for teenagers. Also close to wonderful childrens attractions (enchanted village) and lots of wonderful areas to explore for adults and children alike. There are also many many miles of decommissioned railway lines converted to cycle paths within very easy reach. The local villages also hold various events throughout the summer months. About Paul Broderick

We are a middle aged couple who love the French countryside and lifestyle. We run a business from home and set about finding a suitable French property within easy reach of the channel ports. We are both very practical and can turn our hands to pretty much anything. We wanted to create the perfect holiday home for ourselves and for family occasions with parents, children and grandchildren. We are also both keen golfers.

Running costs have escalated and we have bought a winter home in New Zealand on a golf course near Christchurch (also available soon on Owners Direct).

We are also keen motorhomers and find we are using our French home less nowadays. Hence for 2010 we decided to make it available as a 'Gite' so that others can share our dream.

Why Paul Broderick chose Orne

We both speak a little French and have enjoyed many holidays in France for many years. We found that Normandy offers the ideal mix of fabulous countryside, friendly natives and wonderful French cuisine. The bonus is that it is easily reachable in a single days drive from our base in Hanpshire. It takes roughly the same overall time to reach it via Dover/Calais/Boulogne or Portsmouth/Le Havre/Cherbourg/Caen.

The climate, although cooler in Winter than the South, is generally warmer than the UK in Summer and benefits from long summer evenings due to the 1 hour time difference.

The village of Lonlay L'Abbaye is within easy walking distance (5-10mins). Its a traditional beautiful French village with bar, restaurant and small shops. It is renowned for its ancient Abbey which is still used.

What makes this farmhouse unique

With flexible and spacious accommodation, this is the ideal holiday property for a French experience for a large family. We have used it for several family occasions with 4 generations under one roof!

The property stands in an area of beautiful rolling French countryside famous for producing Cider and Calvados. Whilst being well away from any major road network, it is close to local village amenities (walk to the local bar/restaurant) and only a 10 min drive from supermarkets such as Intermarche and Carrefour in Domfront. Domfront itself is a famous ancient hilltop town with historic castle ruins, beautiful churches and traditional architecture. The larger town of Flers with its Chateau, swimming pool, 10 pin bowling and shopping is the nearest large town and 20 mins drive away.

Fantastic space, stunning location!

We arrived fairly late on the Saturday and we were so taken with the location and the house. It was more than we expected and had everything we needed. We used it as a base to tour the Normandy region including Saint-Malo, Granville, Bayeux, the D-Day Landing beaches even though these were some distance away, the drives there were lovely. We also visited Flers and Domfront nearby and weren't disappointed. Would definitely recommend this place and will go back someday. Fantastic break.

A Perfect Base - Happy Memories

Just 2 of us (50+) in late season and so many happy memories. Fantastic location for bridle-path walks, a restaurant and bakery and mini-market nearby, the smell of biscuits from the factory on the other side of the town, the Abbey and cider-press, the local ale. The house is a joy - we didn't fully appreciate the layout of the property from the listing - the high-vaulted barn made a great living space by day and the snug with a stove at the other end of the property was the perfect place to curl up of an evening. We like to cook and every kitchen item we needed was available. There are several outside eating areas to provide sun or shade as you wish. The owner was extremely friendly and adaptable and the local caretaker just let us get on but was a short distance away if needed. Highly recommended.

Holiday in lonlay

We enjoyed a very relaxing holiday at the house in Lonlay. The surrounding countryside was magnificent, and the views were stunning every morning as we looked out over the village. There are so many wonderful sights in Normandy for tourists, our 10 and 14 year olds were equally kept busy with activities, such as kayaking, hiking, high wire assault course and zip wires!! Sampling biscuits from the factory in the the village is a must!!

The house was exactly as described on the website, however, we still couldn't believe how big and wonderfully open the barn was! The house was like a home from home, I can't think of anything else that we would of needed. The managers were very welcoming and accommodating with any of our queries.

I would definitely recommend this holiday home and hope to revisit in the future.

Great House and location

What a great house, loads of space for a big family with the two main living areas. The older kids loved the mezz' in the barn and the wifi !!

Very well equipped throughout from the kitchen, patio furniture and even two mountain bikes in the garage.

The local village was an easy 5 mins walk with a fantastic local patisserie (the cakes and tarts are a must) and supermarket stocking all the basics at a very reasonable price.

We brought our own road bikes and explored the local countryside, the Local roads are very quiet but a bit hilly - great for burning off the calories from the patisserie !!

There are plenty of local towns and attractions to visit and some really useful info supplied by the owners, and Richard the manager.

We had a wonderful week and would highly recommend this location.

A beautiful house presented in first class order . We have rented many holiday homes in the past and this house is up there with the best of them.

The location is perfect for touring with the village nearby providing all necessary facilities .

A very memorable holiday

A great combination of factors led this to being a truly memorable holiday, not only for the adults but for our children too (age range 5 to 13). We wish we could turn the clocks back and so it all again!!

Excellent extremely spacious accommodation that was both well equipped and comfortably furnished with a very safe enclosed garden.

Five minutes walk to the village - with a beautiful abbey, patisserie, small supermarket and bar (good for people watching),

A huge range of local activities - go karting, pedaloes, canoes, velo-rail and beautiful lakes and parks all within a short distance.

There was so much to do - we ran out of time.....

There are several beaches with about an hours drive. There are also several good lakeside beaches with swimming, boating, crazy golf areas within a short distance. Mont St Michelle is just over 1 hr. Also many local scenic highlights such as Arthurs Fosse (picturesque lake with walks, horse riding, play areas) only 15 mins, Suisse Normande with many adventure activities (kayaking/'go ape') for teenagers/adults around Clecy (30 mins). There are many superb disused railway tracks locally for cycling or walking

Access generally by car from Channel ports - 1.25 hrs from Caen, 2 hrs from Le Havre, 4 Hrs from Boulogne/Calais

Distances:

The medieval town of Domfront ( just 8km away) with narrow streets and castle ruins dates back to the 11 century and was originally one of Frances strongholds, The castle grounds overlook the Varenne. Domfront has many fantastic restaurants, pizza houses and bars, where a warm welcome is assured from the locals. There is paintballing, go karting, rock climbing, kyaking, walking and cycle routes all within easy reach.

The famous spa town of Bagnoles-del-lorne is 22km away with casino, lake and spa and 9 hole golf course. I

n the main town of Flers there is a swimming complex, bowling alley, and some fantastic shops.

Mortain has go karting, and the enchanted village - a wonderful day out with the children - indeed we believe this to be on of the best venues in the whole region for children of all ages.

The Normandy/Orne region has a fantastic history the 15th & 16th century castles, manor houses and churches are well worth a visit. The forests and natural parks are all within reach of the house.

It has two double bedrooms both with ensuite facilities. The master bed is on the first floor and the second double and twin are on the ground floor. There are 3 seperate lounge areas (2 with TVs) one of which can be segregated for privacy if required. Outside: The garden has two lawned areas one of which is secure for use by young children.
