About Keith Phillips
The cottage is about YOU and your special time here. We have a great interest in birds, wildlife, wild plants and ecology and do our best to provide any information you may need -where to see different species and when. We also like to eat ---- and drink the fantastic Alentejo wines which are an undiscovered treasure!! So hopefully by now we know where to go if you want days out, whether locally, in the Algarve or the West Coast and where the good restaurants are both at the coast or more locally. We have no commercial connections with any of these - just places we like or which others have enjoyed. We are around if you need us but will never intrude if not.
Keith Phillips purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Keith Phillips chose Ourique
Casa Sossegada is a very special place which we cherish. Peace and tranquility yet with easy access to the things you need. It is surrounded by natural land, wonderful views, a lovely garden and has a pretty, very private pool for use of the cottage only. The pool has a salt system kind to the skin. You can walk around our lake, sit a while or fish - just ask us about that. The house is solar powered. We have our own boreholes for water with a filtration system. Sanitation is by natural fossas. There are no pesticides here!! We have a back up generator if there is no sun for several days- not often used. Bottled gas for cooking and hot water is the only thing we rely on from the outside and that will change shortly. Dependent on the time of year we can bring you some of our organic foods to enjoy. Lemons, oranges, pears, apples, figs, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, seasonal greens and herbs. If you want to go somewhere that too is easy. The West Coast or the Algarve - or take the day train to Lisbon from Funcheira leave the car there and enjoy the day. So - no jobs for you as visitors - maid service weekly - a place to relax and have fun.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage offers total privacy peace and relaxation without being too remote from the things you may need. If people do not want to wear any clothes no one will see !! There is easy access to the Algarve or West Coast. Stunning sunrises over our lake. Stunning sunsets from the rear terrace where you can sit, eat and relax. Forest views from the pool. Advice about walks or birdwatching and the best places to see different birds and at what time of the year including the migrations. If you want to go horsriding we know people who have very good horses. The ideal place to get away from it all!

A great, relaxing, place to holiday...
We had a wonderful stay in beautiful surroundings. Very peaceful - no noise of traffic or any other human/mechanical sounds, just lots of birdsong and the occasional sheep. It was lovely to see and hear so many birds first thing in the morning. The house is immaculate and very comfortable, Vicky and Keith were very friendly without being intrusive and, if you like animals as we do, it was fun to get regular visits from the adorable Manuel the dog and Basil, his feline sibling! Great stay, thoroughly recommended.
Really happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. It was good to meet you all. We try our best to ensure that the cottage in its natural surroundings is a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday . The bird life here is varied and unique so we are glad you appreciated it whilst not being so remote that access to restaurants and other amenities are a long drive ! You're welcome any time --- many thanks for your kind words.
On arrival at the property we were overwhelmed with the silence, just birdsong with no other properties in sight. Having let ourselves in we realised that the photos and description did not do this place justice. After a few short minutes Keith arrived to show us around both inside and outside. Vicky & Keith live next door but their house is not visible from the cottage. We found them to be very approachable to ask about the area, places to go, places to eat etc, etc. Whilst always being present they respected your privacy. Sadly, we only stayed 1 week and after that time we did not want to leave, a good reason to return for a longer period to experience this wonderful property, it's facilities and the wildlife which is abundant, especially for birds.
Thank you for those kind words about the cottage! We really must get some better photographs to show off its comforts and views. We try to be around to help if asked ( or to be invisible if that is what's required). Happy to advise where different birds and other wildlife can be seen. Hopefully too we can direct anyone to good places to eat and interesting towns nearby to visit - or the coast . Thank you for adding to our list with the restaurant you visited - card on the board in the cottage. Great pleasure to meet you both - welcome anytime.
Get away from it all.
We really value our own pool (family of 4). The pool exceeded our expectations. It was long enough and with a well graded depth profile to swim properly, which in our experience is quite rare.
The photos don't do the house justice in our opinion. It was really comfortable and well-equipped and the local supermarket was well-stocked. The seating areas around the house always offered us what we needed, whatever the time of day. Early morning coffee drinking in the sun, afternoon shade or a comfortable area where we could play cards in the evening.
Our boys used the DVD and we were able to keep up with the news from home via BBC news.
We had no trouble sleeping as the rooms were comfortable and it was a rare luxury in a two-bedroomed house to have two good-sized bathrooms.
The lack of traffic noise - or any other noise apart from bird song - around the house is striking as are the views of the stars at night.
We did only two trips out, to Vila Nova de Milfontes and to Beja, both of which were worth it.
Reaching the house from Faro was a painless drive. We all loved our time here and would very much like to visit again.
Thank you Keith for being a great host.
Thank you for your kind words. I try to provide facilities for all ages and needs inside the cottage and outside on the terraces and pool as well as balancing complete privacy with being available if anything is needed. Including information about places to visit, markets, restaurants, horse riding - anything visitors may like to do . Very glad you enjoyed your time here in this peaceful and special area of Portugal and that you all had a good holiday. You were great guests and look forward hopefully to welcoming you here again in the future.
superb rural retreat with wonderful pool and super friendly and helpful owner
We were met by Michael the owner at the supermarket in Ourique about 10 minutes or so from the cottage. After a short drive we arrived at the superbly equipped and spotlessly clean cottage which far exceeded all our expectations. Having devoured the very well stocked welcome pack of food and wine we explored the lovely cottage grounds complete with beautiful plants and amazing pool and we soon realised that this time we really had hit the jackpot for a place to stay. The weather was superb the week we were there and although it was tempting to stay at home by the pool all day taking our meals on each the three patios around the house (following the sun), we ventured out into the rural unspoiled Alentejo countryside to explore. We weren't disappointed with day trips to the Atlantic coast, Beja and Mertola being particularly enjoyable. The local supermarket was very well stocked, particularly with seafood and wine, which was very reasonably priced, and the local cafes served up excellent coffee (cappuccinos around a pound). Michael the owner was brilliant - friendly and helpful but never intrusive. All in all a fantastic unforgettable holiday. Thanks so much Michael. We will be back.
Tim thank you for writing a lovely review.
It was my pleasure to welcome you to the wonderful location I happily call my home
Seeing your Mum David and you relaxed throughout your stay and your mention that all here exceeded your expectations will help any potential new guests when considering their many different options about staying in the Alentajo
Once again thank you for choosing to stay in Casa Sossegda and I look forward to welcoming here again
You won't want to leave
Vicky and Mike have created an tranquil ecological paradise outside of Ourique. They are wonderful hosts: charming, generous and helpful, just who you wish you had as neighbors at home. The cottage is clean, very generously equipped, and more than big enough for two adults and two teenagers. It even comes supplied with plenty to eat and drink upon arrival! The location is great for excursions, but don't plan on too many. You will want to watch sunrises and sunsets, take long morning and evening walks through the area, and go for an afternoon swim in your own private pool. Be sure not to miss the spectacular night sky!
Thank you both for all your very kind words We naturally love every moment we spend here It is however the great responses we regularly receive from our guests that reminds us just how lucky we are to be living here
We want to live there!
This is a very special place, which feels a a bit like Shangri La. You probably won't understand how truly special it is until you get home.
The cottage is lovely, with everything that we needed, and is set in what could be your own private nature reserve or park.
The sun rises over the lake in front of the cottage and sets on the hills behind the secluded swimming pool. You can watch both from different sitting areas, in the company of nesting swallows or the resident geckos and lizards.
If you want to get back to the simple life Casa Sossagado is just about perfect.
Although Mike and Vicky live on site their house is out of sight of the cottage. They are the best hosts you could ask for, ably supported by their dogs and cats who sometimes stop by on their own to make sure that you're OK.
We love the area and enjoy exploring the local towns and seaside resorts, which haven't been spoilt by the excesses of the tourist trade.
We've been lucky enough to visit for three years running and will certainly be returning again.
Thank you Simon and Erica for your kind review It is so helpful to potential new guests to learn much about the area and features they hope really do exist from the website information We as the owners love sharing our guest cottage with like minded people who appreciate this unique location We hope that it will soon be time for your return when you will notice some more little changes
Mike and Vicky xx
The Algarve beaches are approx 50 - 60 minutes by car. The less busy beaches and coves on the West coast, traditionally favoured by the locals are lovely Milfontes and small places around 45 mins . Excellent fish restaurants there. Nice little shops, cafes,
Nearest airport is Faro being 95km away. A hire car is essential.
Closest town is Ourique about 10 minutes by car. Then very nice town of Castro Verde about 20 /25 minutes. On the outskirts of Castro Verde is the LPN bird reserve where you can see many wonderful birds - either on the reserve or in the villages around. The Great Bustard the largest flying bird is famous. There are many and the owner who is a keen bird watcher and conservationist can help you with information on where to go and what you are likely to see at different times of the year. Beja is much bigger and is 60km north of Ourique or Albufeira which is approx 65km south and is the closest Algarve town. Very busy with bars and tourist amenities
If you feel like driving further, Evora is situated approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes away, but is well the worth the travel, being one of the major historic towns of Portugal. From Ourique you can also catch a coach direct to Lisbon if you would like a day out. Or get the train from Funcheira 20m / 25 minutes drive where you can park your car free. The train service is good and not expensive.
Ourique has 3 banks, 2 main supermarkets, and a health centre, cinema, swimming pool, and several restaurants serving traditional food. Black pork nis excellent and locally reared naturally outdoors.
Chicken is also good plus the Mirandesa steaks which have a really good flavour. There are other foods available such as pizza pasta and snacks as well as local dishes. Many are inexpensive and all we have visited are clean and well kept. Castro Verde has nice cafes and restaurants and some good little shops for clothes, shoes and many other things. It also has a nice church with blue tiled interior.
