The newly renovated 500 year old stone house sits on 2.5 acres, surrounded by fields and forests. Just outside the small village of Saint Mayme de Péreyrol half way between the historic towns of Bergerac and Périgueux, and smack in the centre of the Dordogne, France. It is a 5 minute drive to the small town of Vergt that has 2 weekly outdoors market, 2 super markets, 3 pharmacies, 4-5 bakeries, doctors’ offices etc.

About Sonia

We are an international family: I am from France, my husband is from Portugal and our two daughters are American since they were born in New York, where we now live.

Sonia purchased this farmhouse in 2008

Why Sonia chose Perigord Blanc

The house belonged to my mother, but it was falling into ruin. It had changed very little since it had been built 500 years ago (it had no kitchen or bathrooms; no electricity or running water). My husband and I decided to take it over and we spent 2 years restoring it. We wanted to keep it as authentic as possible. As much as possible, we used local and natural construction materials.

Two years later, we had a house that was more beautiful and comfortable than we ever imagined.

Notes on accommodation: We have tried to build the house so that it is environmentally friendly. We used traditional and natural construction materials. We installed geothermal heat that pumps air from underground and compresses it into warm air. On the ground floor, the heat is provided under the tiled floor. In the upstairs rooms there are radiators, and the bathrooms have towel warmers. We installed a water filter to minimize the use of bottled water. Outside: Property is surrounded by fields and forest. Garden is fenced in. Pool is 10x4m. It is private and heated. 1 terrace facing east for breakfast and 1 terrace facing west (and pool) for lunch/dinner. There are pool chairs. There is a barbecue. Garden has organic fruit trees which guests are free to eat. We use a salt filtration system for the pool to minimize the use of chlorine. Utility Room: Washer, dryer, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linens, bath towels and pool towels available free of charge. Housecleaning and linen change for rentals more than one week included in rent. Other: Separate dining room with table for 8.

A Beautiful House.

Just come back from a fantastic weeks stay at this lovely house, plenty of space inside for my wife, myself and our four children. All good sized bedrooms and plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. Due to the lovely weather most of our holiday was spent outside the house which is beautiful to look at with a great pool and beautifully kept gardens.

Took day trips out most days except for one day when we chose to have a pool day as it was so hot and whatever time of day or night you sit outside you can hear a pin drop, no neighbours, no cars, just complete peace and quiet.

Took photo`s of the house to show friends and all their reactions were the same "WOW", of all the houses in and around the area I believe I picked the best one.

We did have the pleasure of meeting the owner [ Sonia ] while we were there, a lovely lady who is very proud of the house and rightly so.

Owner's Response: Mick and his family were wonderful and pleasant guests. They left the house so clean and tidy that I actually thought the housekeeper had already cleaned up after their departure. In addition, they graciously forgave me for my communication mix ups prior to their arrival.

A hidden gem

A beautiful house with big rooms and four excellent bedrooms. The ground and swiming pool are a good size with enough space for children to play. Lovely old barns and a BBQ. Breakfast terrace and main terrace work well for catching the sun. Housekeeper is very accommodating and the house is spotless. The lake with beach, slide, pedalo and restaurant is 8 mins away by car; the town of Vergt is 10 mins away with all shopping you could need (is also nearest bakery). Main Dordogne excursions (caves and castles) are 45-60 mins away so enough time for children to sleep in car, and also means the house does not feel in the middle of a tourist trap. This house is a great find. Enjoy.

Good trips: main food and non-food Vergt market on Friday, smaller food only one on Sunday. Chateau de Commarque (impressive ruins, great for children). Grottes de Proumeyssac (massive cave, popular). Grottes de Bernifal (locally owned, off beaten track, open at 1100 and 1500, informal), local restaurants.

A comfortable house in a tranquil setting

We had an excellent week in this spacious and comfortable house. The house is very well equipped, owner has thought of everything you could need. The garden is large and private, there are fruit trees you are encouraged to use, we had delicious plums! The house was immaculate when we arrived and we had a very friendly and helpful welcome. The countryside around is green and pleasant and the Dordogne river is within reach for days exploring. We had a good meal in the small restaurant in the village. The house keeper is also an excellent cook, she made a delicious meal for eight on our last evening. We would certainly recommend this house to others, it's even nicer than the photos suggest.

It is a 2 hour drive to the Atlantic beaches in Arcachon. There is a lake 5 minutes from the house that has water slides, pedalos for rent and a decent restaurant.
