About the property

near Villeneuve d'Aveyron, Occitanie, Peaceful Village within Easy Reach of Historic Market Towns

The house is a restored 19th century farmhouse built of local stone. As is typical of the area, a small flight of stone steps leads up to the terrace and the upper ground floor living area which you enter through a fine old oak door. The sun rises on this side of the house and sets over the field on the other side. It is a delight to take breakfast on the terrace in the morning sun. The 10m by 5m (salt water) pool is overlooked by the terrace. The huge light and airy attic is accessed by a spiral staircase from the living area and by an outdoor wooden staircase leading from the ground floor up the side of the house. It is a 10 minute drive along country roads to Villeneuve, 20 minutes to Villefranche de Rouergue (Thursday market) and half an hour to Figeac (Saturday market). A 15 minute drive takes you to Cajarc (Saturday afternoon market) and the Lot River. The local wines from Cahors (red) and Gaillac (red, white and rose) are excellent and inexpensive.

I love travelling and I love France. We have had the house since 1991 and have had many wonderful family holidays there. Friends have often come to stay with us there and some come year after year.

I have a husband and 4 children, now grown up and the house and area have been a memorable part of their childhood and adolescence.

Why Diana Martin chose Aveyron

We bought the property in this area because we were attracted to the untouristy rural qualities of the region, and because we had good French friends who also loved it. The surrounding landscape is fresh and green and yet long hot summers are usually the rule.

The village can be accessed from Toulouse airport (2 hours away), or by car from any of the ferry ports. It is about a 10 hour drive from Caen ferry port. There are also railway stations in the nearby towns.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We enjoy the peace and quiet of the village, the clear night sky full of stars, the liveliness of the market towns, the availability of good food and wine.

The house has a great deal of character which is not easy to describe, but which many people find very attractive. It feels like a much loved home.

Notes on accommodation: The thick stone walls and wooden shutters keep the house cool in the summer. There are also standing fans, and ceiling fans in 2 of the attic bedrooms. The house is our second family home and our children and the children of friends have always enjoyed being there as the property has lots of character and there are plenty of areas to roam. In September 2010 our daughter and her husband had spectacular wedding celebrations in the house and grounds with 130 guests. Outside: There is a large table with benches and chairs on the terrace, also umbrellas. The private swimming pool is a rectangular 10x5m accessed by steps in one corner. There is a solar heated shower by the pool. There are plenty of plastic outdoor chairs and a plastic table which can be used by the pool. There are 6 pool loungers. There is an outdoor table tennis table. The small barn which houses the spacious summer kitchen adds a lovely indoor/outdoor area for cooking and eating. Utility Room: Washing machine, ironing board and iron, shower, sink and loo. Fridge. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: There are plenty of towels and linen, including spares for changing after one week. The house is cleaned before and after occupation, or during by arrangement. Other: There is a DVD player in the attic. It is a useful extra living and sleeping area. Close to the house is a spacious summer kitchen with hob, sink with hot and cold water, table and chairs for 12 plus. Lovely views of barn and chestnut trees.



Car: necessary

Travel: Toulouse airport nearly 2 hours away. There re railway stations in Villefranche, Figeac, and Cahors. A car is recommended. It takes c 10 hours to drive from the Channel ports.


Villneuve (7kms, bastide town and historic church, with cafes, restaurants, small supermarket. Villefranche de Rouergue (17kms), Thursday market, cafes, restaurants, big supermarkets, beautiful centre. Figeac (25kms)has a lovely town centre and Sat market, some excellent restaurants, cafes and shops. Cajarc is on the river Lot, has African festival in July, and Saturday afternoon market. The beautiful abbey of Conques is one and a half hours drive away.

Further Details:

There are major French banks with `holes in the wall' in all the towns mentioned above.

A visit to the Tourist Offices of these towns will give one information about local activities, concerts, guided walks, etc.
