About David Alderton
Kirsty & David are a London based couple with a large family of teenagers. We inherited the property from Kirsty's parents and embarked upon a rebuild project which was completed in August 2009. We have tried to recreate the character of the old house and add touches of our own style to create a family home. It's our 2nd home, as we still have our family to raise in London. So, as you use the house you'll find panelling that was restored from the old house, you'll find furniture made by Kirsty's father in many of the rooms and you'll find family artefact's throughout. To help support our dream and to ensure that it is used, we have decided to let Scotland Farmhouse. We hope anyone booking the house will fall in love with the place as we have.
David Alderton purchased this Farmhouse in 1970
Why David Alderton chose Hilgay
In its previous state, Scotland Farmhouse was a working smallholding, where Kirsty's parents grew their own fruit & vegetables, bred chickens, rabbits and goats. As the years passed, being self sufficient became more of a challenge and they came back to London to be closer to their family. The farmhouse started to deteriorate and subsidence took its toll forcing us to demolish the farmhouse. However, by reusing all the bricks, slate and some internal artifacts Scotland Farmhouse was rebuilt. The only new modern design feature was the inclusion of a balcony allowing visitors to view the Littleport Riviera, as at night you can see the distant twinkling of the “Lights of Littleport” across the flat fenlands that was once the sea.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
Scotland Farmhouse is a large, secluded, fully facilitated country house, which is perfect for a family, group of friends or just a cosy couple. It has easy access to the Norfolk coast, Thetford Forest, The Broads, Cambridge and Ely. London is only an hour away by train. Being in the heart of the Fenland means access to many nature reserves, such as Welney Wetlands. Sandringham (Queen Elizabeth's country house) and Newmarket racecourse are a short drive away. Should you choose to put the car keys away, there garden games and fishing all available at the house.

Lovely relaxing holiday.kids loved playing in the garden with all the toys provided.
The family really enjoyed staying at this spacious house. It had everything we needed for 10 people .The welcome pack of wine ,chocs ,tea ,coffee etc.was a nice touch. We were lucky with the weather ,so spent a lot of time in the large garden and the children could make as much noise as they liked as there are no near neighbours. We spent a couple of evenings walking along the lane ' bunny spotting '.Some of the dining chairs were a bit wobbly as were the garden chairs but it didn't bother us too much.Would love to stay here again.
Old-world charm with all mod cons
Everything in place as described. The only (slight) difficulty was getting to grips with the hot water - but the Nest controller is easy to use.
Lovely house in a fabulous location
Everything you need here - plenty of room for a big family gathering .
10 of us spent a great weekend here - could of stayed longer!!
Such a gorgeous place - quite remote, but so pretty - the photos don't do it justice! And lots of space, a lovely garden and we were blessed with boiling hot sunshine this weekend- I would definitely return - we might plan another family do there as everyone loved it so much!
A nice house in need of some TLC.
The house is located in a beautiful spot and perfect if you wish for peace and quiet. We were a party of 7 children and 3 adults so it slept us all very well. There was plenty of space for everyone but it was helped with the fact that we had superb weather.
The house is cluttered, lots of old furniture and bedrooms with stuff in draws so although it had plenty of bed space it was cluttered too.
I would recommend the house, although I think it needs a proper clean, when we arrived it smelt and needed all doors opened to rid of the musty smell. On closer inspection it felt like it needed to be throughly cleaned, stains on the bed covers when we stripped the bedding at the end of the day, cobwebs under beds, kitchen units with food marks on them and a freezer full of food, which was a nightmare as we have ordered food that needed to be in the freezer.
A disappointing review which we feel is a reaction to the fact that we had to charge the customer for additional cleaning after the house was left in such a poor state. The description of a cluttered house has never been commented on by any of our previous guests and the furniture is purposely eclectic to give the house a warm, homely feeling as can be seen in our photographs.
Lovely property in a gorgeous spot
A group of us stayed at Scotland Farmhouse for a lovely relaxing weekend. What a gorgeous property and a beautiful location! The house has everything you need, and there is plenty of space. David was very helpful and answered any questions we had very quickly. Would definitely like to visit again! Thank you :)
